100% committed to buying one, single blade.. TC... Barlow.. sheepsfoot... bazinga!! I also love the idea of forum regulars getting an advanced order option (1 knife).

I do like a Barlow with micarta.

Light colored or blue denim micarta would look great.

I am a micarta newby! (Or perhaps a traditionalist stick in the mud:eek:)!
What are those colors/types called please??

I'd tuned out of this thread for a while, but then I got wind of talk of sheepsfoot and lambsfoot blades.... There was certainly a pleasant surprise waiting when I checked back in. :)

A sheepsfoot (for lambsfoot :D) TC Barlow as the 2017 forum knife sounds great. I really like the idea of natural linen micarta for the handles.

Edited to add: upon reflection, I like the idea of tweed Micarta even better.

Those look like tan linen micarta (lighter colored knife) and natural canvas micarta to me.

Charlie, that idea seems pretty sound. I'm happy to go with whatever you recommend.

Living where I do in the Western Isles of Scotland, I could source Harris Tweed which I'm sure could be made into Micarta - (I had Evan make a custom for me with a yellow Harris tweed and some kind resin once when he first started out). Harris tweed is available in just about every kind of colour combination imaginable too. I'd be happy enough to do a bit of the leg work with that if it was logistically and financially possible.

For those wondering what it is; here's the website of one of the many small companies on Lewis producing Harris Tweed and tweed products;

This would be absolutely awesome. My vote is for tweed micarta. Someone mentioned rams horn too. Another very good idea.
I would rather see the knife have a lambsfoot rather than sheepsfoot. I think a lambsfoot would be more unique.

Sheepsfoot barlow in micarta? I'm totally in!

Seconding or thirding this, if not for this knife, than for a future one. I'm loving the idea of a sheepsfoot barlow with wool tweed scales.

I'm a new member. This conversation inspired me to purchase a membership. Thanks everyone! I hope to get a forum knife. Both the muslin micarta and natural canvas micarta look great to me.

The lighter is Bone Canvas micarta and the darker is Natural Canvas micarta.

Some of the Natural Canvas runs seem more tan than others. I included a photo of my (former) #18, but I think some of the 85s in Natural Canvas were of this same, more tan, shade as well.

I assume that the tweed micarta theme is all tongue in cheek. After all, I have a hard time imagining that one getting pulled off.

But, boy, wouldn't that be amazing. That would certainly be a unique scale type, and it would please me to no end as a tweed lover.

I also liked the gag about having a leather shield.

How bout stabilized horse droppings? :D those looked.....interesting, and should be cheap! ;)

Welcome to the porch TFBraden. Congrats on the Membership upgrade. You should have no trouble buying a BF knife as long as you keep an eye on this thread.

I can tell everyone this much: the 2017 BF knife will be a GEC if one is made at all, since they are the only remaining company willing to work with us. So with that in mind, I believe the 2017 BF, if there is one, will be a similar model to whatever they are producing around November. This is about the only feasible method for us to produce a short run (350 at most) of forum models, and even at that, we are still 150 short of a full 'special factory order'.

So, here we see that 500 is the minimum order. Then there's this

"We have considered that, Rachel. We have been ordering 300-350 BF knives, but this time I will stick out my neck and order 500 - the largest order that GEC allows. Gulp!" (Waynorth)

So which is it?

I'm out this year. I certainly don't want to make any enemies here but I just don't approve of the business arrangement being made again this year. Have fun and enjoy your knives, I'm sure they'll be beauties.

I guess that means more to go around for the rest of us! :D:thumbup:

I believe Charlie filled the remaining 150-200 knives with a similar run of his own to meet the 500 mark. For example, he did a SFO with ebony covers at the same time as the forum knife from last year.

It's a little confusing I see. 500 is not the minimum order, it is the maximum. You can order fewer, but it pushes the price-per-knife up. Last year I added 150 of my own HJs to the 350 so we both would get the benefit of the best price at 500 knives.
Is that clear?

I see Jake posted just before me. Maybe two views of the process will help. Thanks Jake!

If one studies the problems of large-number production, one comes across the terms "economy of scale" and "set up cost". Here, there is a large cost to set up for a particular pattern of knife. The more knives you produce under that set up, the less money you have to charge or amortize against each knife.
