Will there be a 2017 forum knife?

I think (at least here) that the #15 Barlows is CC's turf and we should avoid that for a forum knife.

I would tend to agree. I would like to have another TC, but I'm not sure a group forum buy is the correct format for that model, though certainly Charlie knows best. I was a little surprised by the 2014 Rendezvous knife, which was a TC not ordered by Charlie (though with his permission, if I recall).

Hi, I am new to the forum. Can the members outside US participate forum knife?

I like GEC knives very much. If TC barlow is not definite, what about a #99 Wall Street? This time not lockback but a slipjoint. All steel bolsters and liners, ivory micarta or ivory bone covers, stainless steel satin finish long pull drop point, wharncliff or may be a lambsfoot blade...

Really white micarta scales would be pretty cool and not common. I'd go for that. But I'm pretty flexible.

I believe the answer to the bolded text is yes.

Welcome to the forum!

I dont knoe that this suggestion is of any use, since Charlie already offered to do it, and since it will be a TC barlow that will sell out in minutes. BUT... We could do some kind of pre-order, or a crowd funding deal like IndieGoGo or Kickstarter. That way it's paid for up front.

Not so sure they will sell out in minutes, there are after all 500 knives proposed. This too will ensure that it is not a rare or flipper friendly run. With Forum Knives there's no pre-ordering, you pay and then sit back and wait with intense anticipation for some months. Something to look forward to.

I think that Charlie proposing a TC Barlow for the forum knife is awesome. Over the past couple years, the TC's have become increasingly difficult to acquire on release, at least this one won't be.

I'll also throw out there...why not a #38 the way we want to configure it? I've read various responses to the single blade #38 and I know many of us were hoping for more out of GEC.

I'm not disagreeing, but its a bit of a goose and the golden egg situation. I don't know whether 500 odd TC barlows clad in less-traditional handles is necessarily a good thing for the little tradition that has sprung up around that knife.

What GEC did to the beerscout is a very relevant situation here. I had a few of the old run of beer scouts, and only one of the new run (oak), and that's because a lot of the new run have been done in less desirable handles. I personally think that the second run of beerscouts hasn't really been much benefit. Its gone from a situation where every beer scout was highly desired and sought after, to one where everyone has a tired finger scrolling past the beer scouts left on dealer's sites. It would have been worse if they had nail nicks - look at the crown lifters.

I don't want to say much more, I think we just need to think carefully about what we want from this knife and not spoil things.

I'm sure everyone has tons of ideas if the sky was the limit. However, Charlie's offer is a fair one considering the alternative may well be no knife at all. I think some people should consider that. How many other members here have a good working relationship with Bill Howard and GEC to pull off an order like this?

Thank you. Saves me the trouble of posting something similar.

At this point we are discussing the covers, not patterns. There was some dark micarta posted that looked very awesome to me.

I hope we get to vote on 1 or 2 blades on the barlow. Last year's knife had 2 and was still affordable.

The earlier idea Jake had of a "grab bag" of micarta was cool too!

What pattern was chosen (for the record)?

Us peons won't have a chance getting one of these! I think a rich maroon color would be awesome! And that mistake blueberry would be my second choice!

That's honestly not my intention. However, everything else in your post seems to confirm what I wrote. I'm not criticizing anything you've done or are willing to do. I'm saying that it seems like a pain in the butt. Your post doesn't make it sound any better. I agree, there was very harsh criticism last year. There was also criticism about the 2015 knife. Saying this doesn't mean that I think you or Charlie or GEC or anybody else did anything wrong or didn't do the best possible job. What I'm saying is that despite all of the hard work and financial risk what we ended up with was a knife that was heavily criticized and was really just a version of Charlie's SFO with different covers and a different tang stamp. In my opinion I'd rather not see you go through that or see the forum go through that again for a knife that's just a slightly modified version of something we'd have probably ended up with anyways.

I don't know why you're thinking that I'm being harsh or criticizing when 99% of what I'm saying is exactly what you're saying. The only place where we differ is that you're saying that you're not yet sure if it's worth it and I'm saying that I don't think it is. Hopefully you'll understand better after this post, if not it's probably best to leave it. Best of luck either way it goes. I'll bow out now. Just one more thread where an opinion that doesn't align with the groupthink is put down. Sad to see how common this is nowadays.

Unfortunatly I couldn't agree more with your last 2 sentences Cory.

This last sentence kinda had me scratch my head from knarfeng's post,

In past years GEC got half their money when the order was placed with them. The balance when the order was ready to be shipped from GEC. A lot of the knives in previous years were not purchased until months after the final payment to GEC. We've had organizers who did not get all their money back for quite a few months. So, when folks say how anyone could do this, it falls on my deaf ears.

I went back and reread, I never saw one person mention they could do this.

I just get the vibe .....
For some reason the yearly forum knife seems to bring out the worst in some folks. I'll leave it at that.

......that we shouldn't speak up?

Is it not ok to question things? Should we all just be sheep and go with the herd?

Take knarfeng's quote from above, I had no idea how the money went to the factory and I have followed along for a lot of these.

When we see the bigger picture with money and how the numbers really work...i.e. 500 is the max order. I can think of a few ways we could make this process much more streamlined.

If GEC isn't willing to make a one off knife for us (using existing patterns even) then we should shop around. I am certainly open to seeing what we can find over seas even. Or reach out to Queen?

Guess I am just not one to settle or bite my tounge. If it is a TC barlow this year, I am sure a lot of people will love it and it will sell well.

I am not mad or upset while writing this. I am just expressing my thoughts on the topic in a (to me anyway) constructive manner. We should be able to have a back and forth about anything to do with knives and people shouldn't take it personally or attack anyone for that matter.

If somehow the annual traditional forum knife can morph back to its roots and become a knife chosen by the community than I would like to volunteer my services to moderate the threads and polls and take the burden away from those who find it such. It would be my honor to help out in the process any way I could.

Am I right in thinking that Spark has approved the forum knife proposed by Charlie, rather than a forum knife in general?
Which is a sheeepfoot Barlow with a crescent nail nick and will be a utilitarin variant of an SFO Charlie's doing for himself, which makes it easier for him and cheaper for us?

That is my understanding as well [emoji106]. I am gonna buy one or two regardless if I can so hopefully we can get this ironed out so someone will take my money.

That's what I got from everything so far. Hopefully we will hear from someone who knows for sure soon.
