Wilson Tactical/Darrel Ralph folder

Dexter, being new to the whole custom vs. production models, when you say that Ryan will be doing this model and DDR that model, what will they be doing? Presumably, most parts are prefabbed? Will they be grinding the blades, etc? Sorry if it is a silly question.. They are really nice looking folders!

From what I understand from Darrel, They both will be building these folder. The higher end ones (I guess the ones with inlays), Darrel himself will be building and Ryan will be doing the non-inlay models.

Not sure if the parts are pre-fabbed or not. They maybe laser cut but that's about it. The rest will be done up like a true custom knife (e.g. grinding blades, hand fitting locks, etc)

I'll see if I can get Darrel to chime in with a few comments about the making of the folders...

Ryan and I are fit and finishing every knife made.
How we make them is the best way we can to keep the quality high and the price point low to serve our customers.
We feel this is a mid custom type knife. We will buy some parts and make some. All will be finished by us.

Sounds like a deal to me! I have taken the liberty of pre-ordering one of these as I don't currently have anything of this quality in a blade this size.

Could this possibly be a worthy substitute for the xtra-large Sebenza I always dreamed of? If Mr. Ralph is involved, it's looking pretty good

Thanks Big D! :)

We have it named it yet but the name is coming.
We have the levels definded.
Ill post when Ryan and I get it all sorted out.

For some reason, that folder just blew me away! Hopefully the Busse folder will be along these lines. Looks like a real winner, and perhaps a good match with S30V? Trying to change things already :D .

Good luck with it!

I had placed an order for one of these with the anodized Ti handles, G-10 inserts and a dual finish (non-coated) blade.

However, I was just informed that the models as pictured in this thread are it. What you see is what you get, and I, you, we, cannot get these "customs" custom made apparently. I wouldn't have thought it would be a big deal to put a satin blade in the anodized Ti frame, but perhaps the logistics of keeping track of all of that would be too incredible.

I dunno, maybe I'm missing the point on this- it's still a cool knife regardless.

Disappointed-

Firebat - did you ask Darrel about this? I'm sure if there was a way, he'd be able to do it for you.

Dex,

The information that Firebat just posted came from me and that is what I was told by DDR. (No changes) :(

Now watch the big bastid come in and change that. :D

If the quality is what I think they will be (excellent of course) and the prices are as stated I think they will have hard enough time keeping up with demand much less have time to customize one. I don't see anything wrong with that decision. Maybe later down the road things will be different.

Dennis,

I agree. I think these are gonna be a "Hot Ticket". Both Darrel's and Ryan's work is outstanding.

The price point being what it is, I don't see how anyone could go wrong with one of these folders. (or even two or three) :D

Hey all-

Like I said, I may just not understand the scope or terms of this project. It's a great knife, I got to handle a proto at the Koval show in Cambridge when I met Darrel to pick up my Apogee. I just wish I could have one with the anodized Ti and satin blade. I think it's a valid question at the very least- there's a satin blade, and there's an anodized Ti handle available- so why not together?

It's Darrel and Ryan's decision as Dennis pointed out, and I don't necessarily *disagree* with it, I'm just bummed. Like I told Don, if that's the worst news I hear all day- it's been a good day, right? ;)

I'll just go sulk in a corner now, as I don't want to tick off Darrel, I've got another order in with him now.... :D

Stabby - thanks for setting that straight. Big bastid might have told me early on but I do not recall though. Well, it doesn't bother me all that much. I like the overall look of the carbon fiber one so that is what I ordered.

Hi Folks
We have decided that is would be a good idea to offer a super custom also.

We will offer pearl, wood, ivory and other high end inlays.
File work will be available on the blade.
Nugget work on the handles also.
Hand rubbed satin blades
Look for the wait to be 1 year or more.

These will be upgrade options.

The base knife must be bought and paid for. Then put in line to have the upgrades applied.

wow! Should see some REALLY nice folders come out of this. I still like the plain the best (although a wood inlay has me thinking). That and the fact I don't think I could wait that long

Blademan
We have been intertaining the though of JIT upgrades. You buy the knife, and schedule the upgrades after you get it.
What we would do is schedule you in for an upgrade. You would hold the folder and use it. We would put you on the schedule. Then a few weeks before we were ready to upgrade you we would call for the folder.
Send it , then get it back with in 30 days with the upgrades completed.

Thoughts?
