Darrel...these look very serious. Just a couple questions: 1)What material are the washers made from? 2) what is the hardness of the D-2 blade 3) can you discuss the scratch resistance of the armour-tuff coating? is it an anti-corrosive? Thanks

Hi
The blade will be 57-59 rc . The armour tuff is fairly scratch resistant. It seems to me to be tougher than black t coating.
The washers will be teflon. The pivot has a pocket under the head with an oring. This keeps the pivot tight as the washers wear.

Darrel, may be I'm wrong, but my understanding was that D2 would have better wear resistance and acceptable toughness at 60-62 HRC, especially for the blade of that size? Is it because of D2M or there was some other reason?

Sir
I like the D2 at this range. yes it may be a bit tougher and such but it will also chip with a thin edge as will most steels.
I prefer to give up a little and gain much when it comes to hardness.
Also if you pry with it at this rc range it will flex better.

we have plans down the raod . It may happen.

I hope you'll seriously consider that, Darrel. That size would look real nice with natural inlays (MOP, abalone...) Maybe that size with those inlays with an ano ti frame and satin blade. Let me know when mine is ready :D

Thanks Darrel! It's always nice to see these designs in a smaller size for those of us who carry in the bottom of the pocket. I hope it happens.

We will see what the future holds for this knife. I feel as time goes on it may be a great project.

It definitely has the makings of a great project. I am very excited about this one. I just hope you guys can keep up. ;)

I hope this thread hasnt lost all of its fire.

I am very interested in this knife and i was wondering if someone has a lock shot of the knife (kinda like the picture Will has of MAXX) I would like to see this pic because i would like to see how "flush" the handle and lock bar are when the knife is open.

PS does anyone make a flush frame lock (when open), so the handle is more ergonomic?

LizardKing - Darrel is currently out in Vegas working hard at the SHOT Show so he is unable to check in to answer questions, they will all be answered when he gets back.

To answer your question about a flush framelock, I suppose you mean there is no cut out in the scale visible for access to the lock bar? If so, Darrel himself does this on his Madd Maxx and EDC models.

Thanks for the response Dexter, i am just wondering if the guys with the Protos are still looking at this thread.

Actually by Flush frame lock (i didnt explain it very well) i mean that when open the handle would feel like a liner lock, because the lock bar would be tapered or have an over lay so that when it was open the entire slab would be flat.

I am just wondering how flat the locking handle is when the knife is open. the Kershaw Vapor (the only frame lock i have) has a very acceptable difference in hight between the locking bar and the slap that it is attached to when open, but other knives i have handled had too much of a height differential. I guess i am just a sucker for symmetry.

Thanks again
Brian

PS on cut outs for ease of access to liner lock-hate them

basically i am looking for this shot:

[Insert Picture from CUDA MAXX's lock that i cant copy because something isnt working right here]

i couldnt find one of the Vapor

btw Ken Onion's site is going to be pretty cool when the construction is done.

LizardKing - you mean this one?

Exactly, Now what if the integral locking Bar was tapered so it got fatter as it got closer to the tang of the blade (then a sharp taper off so it could engage) This could be done with an over lay or actually carving the titanium in this shape (would require so thick Ti)

If a frame lock was made like this then it would stick out when closed, but when open the slab would be flush, i think this would make a more comfortable knife and it would still squeeze tighten.

I am just interested in a lock shot of the Tactical Elite, because i want to know if there is a lot of difference of height between the lockbar and the slab (like on MAXX) or if there is only a small difference in height like on the vapor

Thanks

Brian

Great looking knife! But, are the left-handers going to be forgotten? Any plans to make a lefty model? Will the price increase if you do make it lefty?
