Thanks for the chance, sir!
I'm attracted to the outdoors for one reason, and one reason only. It just FEELS RIGHT. When I'm in the woods or on the water, I feel like I am stripped down to the essence of my being, and I love the way that feels. The small things become important again, and the world seems to hold still long enough to get a grasp on, like it doesn't do anywhere else.
I was raised in a religious family, but I'm no longer particularly spiritual--except when I'm in the outdoors. Being out there makes me feel both incredibly insignificant and marvelously important, all at the same time. I become a part of my environment, rather than it's creator. With no air conditioning, refrigerator, and computer, I become just like the animals, subject to nature's changes and moods, such as the weather and the stinging insects. There is a power in relinquishing control, because as a part of nature, I am able to manipulate my environment in a very direct and very rewarding way. With a simple piece of sharp steel and the skills I have developed over the years, I can make a fire to keep myself warm. I can find food to keep myself fed. I can care for those I love.
In short, I love being in the outdoors because it awakens in me a primitiveness, a very "right" way of being, of living, and I never feel as peaceful as I do out there.
Thanks again,
Frostyfingers
