Hey guys, I ordered a Winkler Combat Axe a month or so ago, and have to admit I'm starting to question whether or not it's a good buy for me. No doubt to the craftsmanship and the product, just I'm not sure if I can spend that kind of money on a tomahawk when I can get a $1-200 or so tomahawk of a more traditional style, considering I doubt I'll ever have a need to tear doors off cars and such. What do you guys think? Should I stay on the list, or opt out? Don't want to wait 'til he's already finished it for me.

If you want it and have the money to spend go for it. If you don't like it you'll have no problem selling it again. Or you could give it to me ;)

The old time tested true money question. Been there soooo many times when I was buying axes.

There is no good answer. It is really up to you in the end, dont let someone else make it. There are a million different yes and no scenarios.

You decide.

Sorry thats all the help I can give. Not a lot.

Thanks!

Mike

It sounds like preemptive buyers remorse. :D. Seriously, that is a totally personal decision. I have absolutely no use for something like that, and would never spend that kind of money on one. Nothing against the product, like I said it's just a personal choice.

What caused this is I saw the Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter movie, which prompted me to get out my old Cold Steel hawk and spin it for a bit, and I started to appreciate it a bit more and thought to myself, "I could get a really nice traditional 'hawk, some knives, multi-tool, and maybe even a shotgun for the price of this one tomahawk. Maybe I should reconsider.." :p

Love the Winklers but that's a large chunk of cash..
I want one but I can Justify spending that much for a Axe ..

Yeah. I ended up emailing him and asking if I could maybe switch to one of his knives, so I could get something I'd be able to use more frequently for half the price and still get the quality.

Not sure why it really matters whether you think you'll use it enough to get your money's worth out of it. Most of us spend quite a bit of money on things we won't really use to their full potential. But if it makes you happy, it's worth the money, whether it saves your life some day or it sits in your safe for you to admire once in a while. If you want it, just get it.

Some people (like me) don't have the luxury of having expensive stuff just to have it.

What knife did you decide on?

I have spent more on a non custom big chopper, and used it.

If you are already regretting it, before you get it, you might have made a wise decision switching out for the knife (though, you will always wonder now......probably eat at you until you give in and order another).

I would get it and not cut anything but air with it, get a feel for it, and if you want you could easily re sell it LNIB at a slight loss. The peace of mind that few bucks will give you will be worth it, I have done this a few times with blades and kept some and sold some, and will probably do it again.

If you've never even held a Winkler, or even an RMJ for that matter, how do you know what you are missing? I've never felt anything like the Winkler Sayoc, it's not just the shape of the handle, but it's mass distribution= weight is in the head.
I have placed an order for the Camp Axe and do plan on using it, no regrets here. Combat Axe seems cool, but I have no "need" for it either. Since I do go camping, and need to chop wood at other times, I feel that it's the best Winkler full tang "hawk' or axe for me.

What is it that you need from an axe, hatchet or hawk? Coolness doesn't always give you what you need.

is it something to make your living or keep you living? or is it just cool and neat?

If you are arounf this post or a few other on BF you may have seen post by EdWood and he has some awesome equipment for his work and safetyhe has what he needs and it is in its place and ready to go.

If you just want a really cool hatchet5 or 8 hundred dollars is a little high in my opinion if you are still making payments on everyday stuff like the house, car, credit cards. it is terrible to have a bad case of the "I wants" on a limited budget

Winkler's are very nice tools but I don't think I need one to just be laying around the house or bouncing all over the truck when I could get by with less or without. If you have to ask if it costs to much, right now it probably does.

Oh, I imagine I likely will. ;) I wanted to get the knife(which I wanted anyways) and get a feel for the quality, and then probably get the hawk in a few months when I've got the money.

Having to own a Winkler Breaching axe and a Utility knife, his work is of no question and left with plenty of awe, apart from his outstanding communication.
I once considered the Combat axe and still do. It's a combo of old proven design with new school steel.

So why did i pick the Breaching axe then? Because i wanted to try the H-13 which i did. Now i've been keen on checking out that Stealth hawk...

Winkler axes are very sought after. I'd get the axe and see how you like it. I once came across an original Remington bullet knife in excellent condition through a trade. I knew the value of that knife, but I carried it for about a month just to have the experience. I sold it for a profit later on and I'll always remember how it felt to carry that grand old knife. If you have the available funds, get it while you can is my advise.

By reading the descriptions, it becomes obvious that the Spike is designed for those that may need to pry and puncture. Seems like it's more for a combat or military person. You say you don't need the Combat Axe, I'm guessing you don't need a combat knife either. The Belt knife looks like the perfect choice for EDC, camping, and a perfect pairing to a Winkler hawk or axe.
Figure out what you need a tool to do and then find the right tool. If you don't know what you need, you'll likely not be happy with what ever you get, just my $.02
