First off, I am so soooo excited for this. If you haven't noticed, I have been posting at a more frenzied pace than my usual norm; I've just been so excited to get to this point to do this. This has been a great community and its time for me to give back.

So, I'm doing a give away like never done before and I'm hoping this goes over well, and maybe others will do the same. I feel privileged to be a part of this community, and to own a small piece of Americana in Andy's knives. I have felt welcomed by this community and Andy, and I have felt the caring and generosity of this community in multiple situations. So I want to give this gift to others.

Here's how this is going to work. To enter my giveaway please tell me somebody that you know that does not have a Fiddleback and deserves one. Please do not nominate yourself; We all know someone that uses or needs knives that deserves a high end tool to the level and quality that Andy and Co bring. Then tell me why they deserve this. It can be anyone. It can be your pops, your child, a neighbor kid that's in scouts, a forum member that participates but does not have a FB or cant procure one for various reasons (our boy RR was in this mold til he got his BC), it really does not matter who. Just make sure that they do not currently have a FB and you feel they deserve one.

Post by Friday, March 20th. I'll read every single one of these posts and I will choose out of your stories whom I feel deserves it the most. Please don't get butthurt if you are not chosen. I will announce the winner on Monday, March 23.

I ask one thing from the winner. Please take a picture of you giving the FB to who you felt deserved this blade. Post it to this forum so we can all relish in your giveaway

Rules:
1 entry per member
Must be a BF Member as of 3/9/2015
Must be 18 years of age (if you want to give it to someone younger thats your biz :))
Must have at least 10 posts
Must be active in the Fiddleback Forums (this is very loosely defined and basically will come down to if i've seen your name float around here)

If I missed any of the normal rules for these things let me know, and i'll add.

The Prize:
2014-11-30 12.19.12.jpg
My photography is horrible, but its an unused Arete in Sandblasted Tuxedo. A great user and a great blade for someones first Fiddleback. I do not have a sheath for it, So if someone would like to donate a used sheath to make this an even nicer package just let me know.

Because your stories are so touching I wanted to broaden the prize package. I will be selecting a First and Second Runner up as well:
First Runner Up will receive a CUSTOM Bark River Sahara Hunter to give to your nominee
Second Runner Up will receive a Blind Horse Knives Bushcrafter to give to your nominee

Thank you and what a cool idea!!

I would like to nominate my big brother for this giveaway! He has always been a generous giving guy. I was the outdoorsy kid always out hiking, backpacking, skiing, mountain biking, doing the Boy Scouts, etc. My brother was a late bloomer! He loves that stuff now, but he doesn't have a good (or any) Bushcrafting knife. He served our country to protect and provide our freedoms. He did 1 tour in Iraq. He's got several tactical knives.

He and I are going on a hiking/camping trip this summer when I return to the US for a family visit (my dad has ALS and I want my adopted baby girl to meet her Grandpa, that and my 2 other girls love him a ton and they need to spend the time with him now while we can). We'll be camping, firestarting, etc on this trip and it would be SUPER cool to present my brother with this Arête before the trip! I have a Bushcrafter waiting for me at his house. It would be cool to pit the 2 tools and users against each other this trip! We've always been super competitive ;)

Great give away idea! Creative and from the heart.

I would choose to give this blade to my older brother. My brother and I came from a divorced house hold and together we endured the worst that that situation had to offer. We made it through those dark times and discovered a little sport called wrestling. My brother and I wrestled together for years and years. Everywhere we went, we wrestled. From the girl next door to the bullies up the street to mom's weirdo boyfriends, we wrestled them all. Through the sport my brother and I became really close. In a lot of ways wrestling saved our lives. It was us against the world.
As we grew up and met the match of our lives and started families, we grew apart. Life has a way of doing this to the closest of friends and families. We get together a few times a year and when we do, we do a lot of blade talk. He spends a lot of time admiring my collection and noticing the extra special craftsmanship that goes into Andy's pieces. He was actually over yesterday admiring my Blackwood KE bushie and I was thinking in my head "Man I wish I had a piece I could give him". Times are a little tight right now though and I just can't swing it. He's been wanting a custom for a while, but can't bring himself to take the plunge. The blade would definitely see some good use; my brother is an outdoorsman and hunter. I think and hope this blade could bring us closer together.

So for all the things that I've learned, all the girls I stole (I met my wife and mother of my kids, on a few double dates with my brother. Don't worry she wasn't his type), all the fights that I've won and lost with my brother and all the dark and sunny days I've been through with him, I'd like to bless him with this Arête. He's a good guy and a family man like me, I think this blade would serve him well.

Thanks for the opportunity.

Josiah

Congratulations on your upcoming 1000th post and thank you for your generosity.

I would like to nominate my friend and one of my hunting partners, Dave. He is a farmer in the Midwest and is an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. I know for a fact the he does not use a quality knife. In fact, last season I watched him use a self modified filet knife to gut his deer. It looked like the blade had been ground down to about 2 inches long and you could still see where the steel had gotten hot. I would love to give him a quality knife to use year round.

I know this one may not be the most deserving, but thanks for the opportunity.

Thanks for the super thoughtful and generous give away. It's really cool knowing this one is going to go to someone who "deserves" it. I mean as much as anyone truly deserves one of these awesome knives.

With that being said, I nominate my good friend and Christian brother, Caleb. We met when a mutual friend brought him over to the fellowship group/Bible study that my wife and I hosted in our home. We didn't really have much in common other than our name (both first and middle!) at the time. I was married with a child and a steady job, and he was hanging out with the wrong crowd, jumping from job to job, and generally unsure of what to do with his life. However he was genuinely nice guy who happened to a little wayward, and our family ended up kind of adopting him into ours. He was over often for meals and family gatherings, and it was a blessing having him around.

Over time he continued growing into godly man. He joined the Army, met his wife (I had the honor of marrying them), and found more steady work in his field. Recently they celebrated their first year of marriage. We still get together Friday mornings for McDonalds coffee and to talk about life, families, jobs, current events, etc. Sometimes we will talk about knives. He mostly listens when we do. He has been wanting to get a fixed blade for when he goes camping with his wife and to learn some bushcrafty skills, but they just don't have any disposable income.

Lately the burden of being the servant leader has gotten him down. He has put aside the pursuit of any personal interests and hobbies because of the lack of funds and because he is a good husband. Because of that, it would be awesome to hand him the Arête. Of all of the non-Fiddlebacked people that I know (including my own brothers), he would be the most excited to receive it and would actually use it.

Thanks for the opportunity. I would like to nominate my big brother. It seems most of us have brothers that arnt as into knives as us. My brother is a wild fella. He has guided in Alaska for 4 years, Oregon for 2, Washington for 1. Recently he had to quit guiding for a more steady pay check and took a job in a mine. Last week they offered him a foreman position but it will require him traveling to Idaho for 6 month stints to train a crew to run a crushing facility. My brother has always been into outdoors but he has always admired my knives but I could never afford to give him one incase of a financial emergency I could sell it off. And he could never afford one being s guide, although they have a killer lifestyle they barely survive. So I would like to nominate my brother who is leaving his family in a couple weeks to go spend 6 months in the absolute middle of nowhere in Idaho. I don't really care if he wins the knife, I just want everyone to know I'm proud of my big brother for committing to something and sticking to it. He's who I've always looked up to.

Thanks again,
Joe
Have a pleasant day.

I'll nominate my Brother....he would probably call me a goober for this, but he is well deserving...was in the air force and air force reserves for nearly a decade, served in Saudi Arabia (desert storm)...he is a patriot. His military career led to a career working on airplanes and it had been lukewarm at best taking into account the economy. He is a dedicated father of four, and a faithful husband who finds joy in those roles. His simple pleasure is the outdoors, which he always includes his sons in....and that's how he spends what extra money that rarely comes along. He volunteers a night a week to prison ministry and was a youth counselor and youth pastor at his local church in Wichita KS for around 15 years with no pay (I think they gave him and his wife a little vacation in appreciation at the end. His giving started when he was young....working with and befriending a paraplegic boy all through high school.

Just wanted to throw him in the hat, no doubt all these nominees are worthy of the prize.

Thanks for the opportunity, very generous!!!

Matt

Congrats on the (almost) 1000th post!

I can't really think of anyone I'd like to nominate (the few IRL knife-buddies I have are either in to tactical knives or knives that they can throw in their toolbox so not really Fiddleback-worthy imo) so I'm not in, but that is a very original idea for a giveaway

Now I don't know if I'll qualify but I'll try anyhow. I have never owned a fiddleback but I mean to get one here sometime in the future. But a person I would like to nominate is my dad. He's in his 50's and is a great, hard working, and honest guy. With in the past 7 years he has hit a rough patch though due to metal poisoning from his prosthetic hips he had. The metal poisoning has caused him mild parkisons disease but not bad enough to affect his everyday life. He still loves to go out on hunting trips with me every chance we get. He is always the first guy to go out and get a moose or caribou for a potlatch.

Umm... i'd be heartless not to let that qualify. Best wishes to you and your dad!

Thanks brother! The darn story posted before I finished too. Just wanted to say that I lurk the fiddleback forum every chance I get. Also that I just gave my dad his first grandson this weekend and that knife would make an awesome heirloom to be passed down to him when the old man has had enough.

This is a super cool idea! Thanks for offering a wonderful opportunity for the chosen special person!

I would like to nominate my older son’s Scoutmaster, Burr Fox. Burr is a 3rd generation Eagle Scout with two sons, one an Eagle and another a Life Scout. Burr has been in Scouting continuously since he was a kid in Cub Scouts. Burr runs a small specialty woodworking shop, but finds time to keep his Troop super active. Backpacking, canoeing, wilderness survival and pioneering are some of his favorite things to teach the young Scouts, but he also teaches cooking, and how to stay clean and dry. We spend at least one weekend a month in the woods and meet weekly. For the weekly meetings, Burr teaches real work skills such as cooking, leatherwork and knot tying.
Burr is a patient and kind man. He ran the Troop for years before his sons were old enough to be Boy Scouts and he is continuing to run the Troop after his sons have left home for college. Burr is overly generous with his time and energy. He also has an understanding wife.

Every time we go camping, Burr keeps an eye out for what Fiddleback I’ll bring. He gets a kick out of admiring and using the different profiles and handle materials. He has used several of my Fiddlebacks for food prep, but would never consider using someone else’s knife for a rougher task. Burr donates over 400 wood handles for Scouts to make knives in our Council’s Summer Camp Mountain Man program, where the Scouts spend a week in the woods wearing a shirt they made, and using a knife they made (at least put handles and an edge on). One year they gave Burr one of their knives so he could try putting one of his handles on. The knife they use is a Green River Belt Blade. This is the nicest knife Burr owns. He gives and gives and never spends money on himself. Burr Fox needs a Fiddleback. As a high end wood worker, Burr appreciates the craftsmanship and quality of fine tools such as Fiddlebacks. His pride and joy tools are his Bluegrass Hatchet and Camp Axe that were his grandfather’s.

Anyway, I know that was super wordy, but there is so much to say about my son’s Scoutmaster, I could not cut it any shorter.

Whoever is awarded this fine Fiddeback will be a lucky and deserving person! Thank you Dave! You are awesome!

Not wordy at all. And for reference for any others. Be as wordy as you feel necessary. Your words are what's going to get this person the blade they deserve :)

I'd like to nominate my younger brother for a couple of reasons. He recently lost his daughter during birth. She was delivered with the cord wrapped around her neck twice. It's been very hard on the whole family, but especially him. It basically made him a changed person for the better. If I could take his mind off of this tragedy, for even just a minute, it would mean a lot. He has never had a good quality knife and would be sure to see the value in it. I also just found out 2 weeks ago that he's going to be moving over 3000 miles away. Time and finances won't allow us to see much of each other after he moves. That knife would make an unbelievable parting gift. I'm not sure if these things make him deserving of it or not, but he means a lot to me and I'd love to be able to see his reaction. Thanks for the opportunity, and best of luck to you.

I'm not in, but wanted to chime in and say this is awesome! Great idea for a giveaway.

More nominations!!!

Update: Because so many of these stories are touching me, (and i wish i could bring a smile to everyone of these ppl being nominated) I will also be selecting a 2nd and 3rd place! These will be non fiddleback knives, but I wanted to be able to give a little more.

I'm not in either, however, this is most generous of you David. The personal stories have been incredible to read !

Seriously awesome of you. Super thumbs up emoji!

Amazing GAW simply because of all the wonderful nominations. While I have two daughters, and nothing could be finer, I am extremely grateful for the brother I have. As we all are from the sounds of it.

Anyways, I nominate my older brother Joe simply because he brings a foreign-made Schrade every time we go camping and it makes me cringe to see him with something so alien in his hands. But that's nothing compared to the brother of The Fort or Mr. Fox.
