. So I have only been making knives as a hobby for a short time. But I am trying to push myself for this KITH. First time to do a hamon and first time to two woods in one handle. Using padouk and some wood my dad got from Costa Rica (which I think is Osage orange). The etch isn't coming out quite like I like it to but I still have some time.

haha I love it! Nice work. I get those ripples sometimes and I usually smooth them out with a half round file but having the right radius on the grinder sure does make life easier.

Now you can really see what an excellent job you've done fitting that wood. Very nice Marc.

Thanks John. Yeah I tried the half round file, curved sanding backer...... and it was't working out so well for me. Maybe if it was just one material and not wood and brass, but the brass being so much harder than the wood, I just couldn't seem to get the process going good and the wood was coming off at a much faster rate. I basically found myself at a choice, either keep trying the way I was going and hope for the best I didn't ruin hours of work, about $50 in handle materials, and possibly the whole knife itself. The thickness I was getting to trying to smooth it out was pushing the point of either get it right or change directions. As it stands now, I can close my eyes and run my finger across the handle and can't feel the joint. After I get the shaping done, I think it will be easier to maintain that than when I'm working up the grits than trying to fix it.

Thinking about starting a new thread for off the wall bizarre in a pinch ideas like my lawnmower wheel attachment.. HAHA..

I have forged a blade in my signature style... Well except I didn't forge it and I don't think I've made enough knives to have a signature style. But if I did this one is pretty close. Better pics when I get the handle finished up. W2, leopard wood, copper and white g10 liners.

That's looking awesome John.

And I also want to take the time to thank JT for posting this comment.

I ask everyone to bring your A game and really push your self. The way I look at it is like this, make the knife you would want to receive. This is in regards to fit and finish not just style. Make a clean blade that you would be proud to show off to other knife makers.

Participating in this KITH has been the exact thing I need to push my self and I think the results are speaking for them self. I have never owned a custom or hand made knife just production knives. I have to say in the most humble way, I am very proud of the knife i'm turning out. It's going to be hard to send it off, but will be greatly gratifying at the same time the best knife I've made to date will be going to someone who knows what went into it. I've learned so much during this and have been having a lot of fun and enjoyment.

I second that Marc. looking at the quantum leap you have made on this latest knife is really impressive. Mostly I am hoping my knife goes to someone who can offer really good feedback.

I will second the KITH participation pushing you in your personal knifemaking endeavors--I kept on working on my 'Homage to Loveless' knives, and I finally wound up with two that I am proud enough to put my makers mark on--in fact a little more polishing up and putting that mark on is all I have left to do. I'm gonna try and attach a picture of the two I ended up with, and if I don't get a vote, I'm gonna do what Willie suggested and flip a coin--I will say that I think the sheath for the larger knife is a little better than the one for the smaller knife, but otherwise they are both D-2 at 60 RC and in my experience this steel makes a great sporter blade, and is great in getting a good edge, and holding it but not ridiculously hard to put an edge back onto once you dull it a bit.
Here's a pic:

The top one (little larger one) is real natural linen Micarta brown and the bottom one is a little smaller guy with some pretty nice walnut IMO.

And oh yeah, I'm done and ready to ship my knife for the KITH!!!

I like them both, but would be more likely to use the bottom one. I like higher grinds. Just my preference.

Those look awsome .
I've been bitten by a loveless bug latley.
Is the one on the bottom the feild and stream?

Teppo, I don't even know which particular model either of those would be similar to, I just have been working hard on making the guard/bolster on them look professional. the larger one also is one of the first (not the very first) blades that I ground a top swedge onto the blade as well. I've always been a fan of the Loveless style knives that have that distinct handle shape and the guard/bolster that looks as these do. I will say that one maker I really look up to that does a superb job of the 'Homage to Loveless' style knife is BF's own TK Steingass--if you look at his website he has some beautiful ones--I aspire to be able to build ones such as TK. http://www.steingassknives.com/hunters take a look at this one on top of this page of his website, and also the pair called the hunter/caper set--I love TK

Here's my update....Still not sure if I can finish in time. Boy, I wish I had access to my shop and tools. Oh well.

Again great knives .

Hey guys, I'm going to have to bow out. Too many irons in the fire to make it in time. I was hoping to be done today, but it's not going to happen and I'm leaving the country till the middle of February.
Sorry to commit and then back out, I really feel like a jackass!

I wont be able to get one done, just a bit too far behind. next time!

I'll keep this family friendly but I'm very disappointed and angry right now. Went to the in laws this weekend to do some work on their house repairing it from the flooding they sustained from hurricane Matthew. Went out to eat late last night before heading home and someone broke into our truck steeling 3 knives one being my kith knife, another shop knife I had made that had a small crack from HT, one with the handle about half done, GPS and one of my wife's hand bags. Thankfully I was carrying my pistol on me at the time, and my wife decided to actually bring her purse inside with her so I don't have those to worry about, but unfortunately due to this low life piece of scum I'm going to have to sit this one out.
