Winter kith?

Well at least I know it works...

And I made my first saya
as well. I didn't do the pin. I glued very thin strips of untanned leather at the mouth to hold the blade only at those points. I think it works well.

I also see that you decided on going octogonal. Good choice for that style knife

Thanks Fish! It took me a while to tool up for it. I just wish I had more time to devote to the craft.

I meant on the tomato joking as I don't know if that's even possible to do a thin push cut on a tomato. I try to avoid tomatoes that don't come in a jar.

How did you do the edge bevel? Flat, flat both sides, flat/convex mix? I'm just curious since I've got my first kitchen blade currently sharpened 10 DPS flat both sides for testing it out.

I'm messing with you. Flat both sides then slight convex from about halfway down to the edge.

Making some more progress. Definitely happy with the finish I'm getting on the blade. Slow going, trying to get it right. Pretty happy considering this is number 8.

Thanks guys. Still got a little more to go hand sanding the bevels. Still got some j hooks showing at certain angles and still need to grind the false edge on the top. Got the front bolsters flattened so there are no black lines or shadows. Got a little more to work out on the back ones. Working out the process to get the handle shaped with the equipment I have. Think it would be easier if I had a larger wheel attachment, but I'll make do with what I have, just planning out how I'm going to attack it. Thanks again.

Thanks JT.

So a lot has transpired since last night. I was about to give up on the nice handle shape John Gulso (Kuraki) helped me with, and just grind it down so it was an even thickness and smooth it out. That is NOT what I wanted to do, but not having a large wheel attachment was proving to be next to impossible for my skill set to get the back curves right. Tha small wheels on my flat platen were just leaving all kinds of uneven bumps. I spent the good part of the night not sleeping going over in my head 1000 times from Sunday on how to work it out so I could achieve the shape I want with what have since my funds are low and can't afford the wheel I really need to do the job right.

Here is what my problem looked like.

Looks good from the top and bottom, but not from the side.

So after a mostly sleepless night racking my brain on what I could shape to a sanding backer or something of who knows what it hit me about 4am. My broken push mower in the bcak year.

I figured since I only need to to go a little faster than the slowest setting on my grinder it should hold up to get this knife done. And I think it is working out darn good...

haha I love it! Nice work. I get those ripples sometimes and I usually smooth them out with a half round file but having the right radius on the grinder sure does make life easier.

Now you can really see what an excellent job you've done fitting that wood. Very nice Marc.

Here's what I was planning for the kith. 8 1/2 chef, 52100, black palm with ironwood inlays. I know I'm running out of time but I'm still optimistic...
