Winter RAT's Nest

Well a weekender still means at least 18 hours on each side of it for me, but I think it is a great way to start off the new year. I would probably take the week, that way I could head down to FL and see my Mom at the same time.

Cooking idea is great, throwing sharp pointy things great until the beer kicks in... :)
Of course someone will have to get the offical Rack Pack "Tall Tale" award for most believable BS story of the weekend. :)

I think I have some time for this, I would like to go up to the mountains, but I'd have to jump in one of your trucks.

I'm sure we could work that out. My wife already informed me that she won't be attending, so that means that we won't have to bring half the house. I've got the Supercrew F-150, so if anyone wants to hitch a ride with me, you can just meet me at my apartment and leave your car there until we get back. I could certainly use some help splitting the gas bill anyways. ;)

Alright guys. There was enough interest in throwing so a little while ago, me and my buddy Larry set out and hunted down a cut down tree. When Georgia Power cuts down a tree, they cut it into 4"-6" thick disks to make it easily moveable. I picked up 4 disks that are about a foot and a half in diameter. I'll crave the bark off the outside, drill so holes into it and attach some eye bolts so we can hang them from trees, and we'll have some good throwing targets. I have yet to find a better target than this stuff. Works like a champ and they're pine so it'll be nice and soft. Everybody bring your hatchets, tomahawks, and throwing knives.

Might bring something cheap to try throwin, but it is more likely I'll have the camcorder running so everyone not there can get a good laugh :D

(And so Jeff can make a list of teh RCs he AINT replacing LOL)

Ok guys and gals. It's getting closer. Let's make some decisions. I think the dates should be the 8,9 and 10th of January. Is that cool with everyone else. If for some reason people can't make it there till Saturday, that's fine. How does that sound? Also, where are we going to go? This is where I need help from someone else who knows the campsites of North GA better than I do. I only know a couple spots. Both are cool, but not accessable without a truck and they are completely primitive.

I may have to see if I can get some time off for this...

Ok guys. Back up to the top. Let's keep up with this thing. We can't let the damn Texas folks have all the fun. lol So who all is cool with those dates? Does that sound good to everyone else?

Wish I was closer I'd be down in a heart beat, but from northern va it would be to much of a haul for me

Sooo who is still in on this? Who is really going to try to make it? I know I'm going.

Haven't gotten approval from my Boss yet on the time off.... I will check with him again on monday.. of course I might be unemployed if I don't mange to get his new SQL server in soon...

Dates look fine. really looking forward to hanging out, drinking some beer and throwing some pointy bits of metal. What do you guys think about doing a trade blanket/table?
Dylside, throw an email with the prospective campsites please.

I cant make it but I HIGHLY recommend Hickey Gap Campground.
Its free (scheduled to be a fee sight soon so call and check).
It has a vault toilet. Thats it for the modern amenities!
5 camp sites, 2 cars at each max
Each campsite has a tent pad, all gear must be on the pad.
Each has a fire ring.
There is a stream 10 feet from the campsites... TROUT!

Check out some photos here... (yours truly is there amongst the guest :p )

OK guys and gals...
Its just a big tarp, 20X30 I think, from wally world (Walmart).
The trick is how you rig it.
Lay a rope on the ground arranged so you have two big trees at either end. (call this the main rope)
(PAY ATTENTION to wind direction when setting up! you want the rope perpendicular)
Tie one end way up in a tree (bout 10-12 feet should do).
Lay the big tarp over the rope.
The other end gets tied as a hitch so you can pull the excess out and raise the tarp.
NOTE: the tarp is not attached to the rope!
Now start on one side and attach bungee cords to the tarp. Rope is used to tie the end of the bungee to trees or stakes (We used stakes and anchored the leading edge nearly to the ground)
As you anchor around the tarp dont pull anything tight till your almost done.
When tightening the ropes dont pull all of the strech out of the bungee. just pull it maybe 2/3s of its extended length.
Both ends of the tarp should be angled down from the main rope. (sheds water better)
The last thing is to attach ropes to the bungees closest to the main rope.
Just pull these tight enough to keep the tarp from slacking and gathering in the middle of the main rope.

We have learned these tricks from trial and error (lots of error!). In the spring our tarp was in shreds by the time we left. We didnt use bungees and our ropes were taught, when the winds came through (we were expecting tornados, NO SHIT!) it pulled chunks of tarp out at every grommet. We had a large dead fall in the middle acting as a tent pole, the tarp was shoved around it in a down draft! Our tarp tent collapsed and we were huddled around it drinking and playing poker as we listened to the tornado warnings! The tarp was resting on our heads.
The tarp you see in these photos survived the down pour that flooded N Ga and put Six Flags under water. We had to tuck tail and run or we would have been stuck on the mountain for a few more days. That would have been nice except we all had to be back at work in less than 48 hours.

"ZOMBIE SQUAD! We bugout harder!"

Sup Dylan. I'm good for this I think. I'll have to run it by the Mrs. as that is the weekend after our anniversery, but I planned on celebrating early anyways.
