WIP: Time for a batch!

Stanley: Hadn't even thought of that... good call, sometimes even the most obvious safety concerns will fly over ones head :o

Thanks a bunch jonny, happy 4th to you too :p

Little update. Chopper is done!

Been swamped with work, didn't get shop time all week so I took today to myself to do my final hand-sanding on my chopper. Wet sanded to 400 grit, let the paper load up and polished with loaded paper for ~10-15mins a side. Use a solution of baking soda and sunlight dish detergent... seemed to work wonders! All that time spent on the 120 grit REALLY paid off in the end. It appears to be a flawless 400 satin finish... I'm loving the quasi-mirror effect I'm getting from it!

Added my take on jimping. Looks subtle, but it is aggressive enough to give a positive grip for my thumb.

Haven't even touched the other 4 at this point, hopefully later this week I will get them all done to at least 120.

Thanks for looking :)

Looks good.
I really like the logo/mark. If you become a well known maker, just spotting the paw print will tell colectors who made it.

Little update for the wharnie lovers ;)

Finished up sanding this little guy today since I got off work early.

Great feel in hand, will make a great EDC utility blade.

Glare makes it look like there are scratches in the plunge on pics 2&3... I can assure you there is nothing but smooth sanding lines!

I also ordered ~12 sheets of kydex, rivets, flaring die set, and a few more odds and ends from knifekits. Going to attempt to make my first molded sheaths very soon. Just waiting on some cheap heat-guns to go on sale locally, but I've already got a toaster oven ready! :D

Very cool, Jonathan! I think that little wharnie is gonna be a sweet EDC. The finish is looking nice. What's on your mind for handle materials?

Thanks for the comments!

Jonny, I have picked up various colors/thicknesses of G-10 from Jantz, but I'm going to order a bunch of thin liner G-10 from AKS very soon. For this one I'm planning a Black/Red G-10 scale with Royal Blue G-10 liners. I think that combo will look sharp, but could change once I get all my stuff in!

Tried a few things out in the shop yesterday after I finished up knife #3 to 400.
Camera died before I could get all my glam shots but what the hey, good enough, I'm crap at taking pictures anyways! ;)

This knife has the best and most even plunges of the batch. Probably because I ground this one last... hey that's what learning is for!

Added in my jimping... I like it more and more each time I pick up the knives.

Got in my kydex order from knifekits a couple days ago... So I had to test out how easy (or NOT) it is to bend kydex!

2 hours later and I came up with this, good retention, no rattle, me likey. Just used my oven at 375F and waited for the floppy noodle effect... and used my "butt press" with foam to mold it :p

Not too shabby for my first I think... definitely underestimated the difficulty though :o

Last update for a couple weeks now...

All blades are pre-ht finished. All polished one final time with wet 400, and everything washed down thoroughly with soap and water...

These are all wrapped up and will be in the mail this week!

Stay tuned when they return... thanks for reading!

They all look like you are doing a good job in the finishing. I personally believe you need far more relief cut in the handle near the ricasso. For me that shape encourages a hand to slide forward into the blade. It may look good in styling but doesn't work good in use. Again, just my opinion to create a better knife. Frank

Thanks for the comments Frank. We will see how these work once they have handles on them. I agree that design on paper --> real world doesn't always translate how you might think. As I said, once they are handled it can be further evaluated, even once they are hardened it is still not TO difficult to cut away a bit of stock with my grinder to improve the grip.

Update time! Back from heat-treating, and I am very excited!

I spent my evening working off all the scale and polishing everything back to its former glory. They have all been etched now as well, but my camera died earlier and I can't locate my charger... hopefully soon!

Since I'm partially colour-blind and generally without fashionable knowledge... I employed the help of my sister to pick out handle/liner colors lol

Black with toxic green liners for the chopper
P8030552.jpg

Orange with black liners for 1/8th DP necker
P8030559.jpg

Blue with yellow liners for 3/32nd DP necker
P8030561.jpg

Red/Black with red liners for 1/8th WC Necker
P8030557.jpg

Olive/OD/Jade with hunter orange liners for 1/8th Bushcrafter

I have epoxied up the liners and they will be good to rough cut tomorrow... when my new porta-band arrives! Hopefully this will prevent going through 5-6 scroll saw blades per scale set

Thanks for reading! Will be a busy next few days with updates :D

Small update, had a long day at work... couldn't stand properly in the shop since I hurt my back moving ladders all day...

Anywho. Porta-band came today, and I managed to spend 2 hours building a stand for it out of aluminum angle. I'm no machinist/welder so it's all just bolted together. Works really well though! Just need a plate for a work table and it's 100% done! This will save me TONS on belts in terms of hogging down material... now I can rough profile with this and just sand to the lines.

Funny how I needed the porta band to cut the frame for the porta band.. :D.

FYI it is a King Canada brand and I paid $140 including shipping for it. Not a bad deal... was skeptical as I'd never seen a review for this particular saw but I've used many king canada products and they were all fine machines.

Rough-cut all the handle slabs with it, worked like a charm! Also chopped up all my pins and tubing

More updates to come, should drill/epoxy the slabs tomorrow night and start shaping handles this weekend!

Thanks for reading!

Nicely done, angle iron is versatile stuff.

I've been looking and can't find any Canadian sources on a portaband.

I searched their site, but can't find it.

Thanks count!

I got it through a king canada supplier on ebay... he runs a timbr-mart in Nova Scotia and I just happened upon them while browsing for used porta-bands on there.

Hope this isn't against the rules to post a link to an ebay sale but I'll leave that to the mods' discretion. King Canada Band Saw

Thanks, it looks like the Harbour fright version, but without the US to Canada shipping and customs-
