WIP: Time for a batch!

Been there done that:o I have gotten to the point that if I don't draw my own blood with a knife at some point during the making of it, I don't feel it is finished yet:p

Time for a picture heavy ending to this WIP. FINALLY got around to finishing the last two knives in the batch... it was about damn time :D

These last two seem to have turned out really well in terms of finishing the handles. I did a lot of work rounding them, and avoiding the blocky handle syndrome that seems to plague us newbies!

They both got kydex pants, and I also redid the kydex for the bushcrafter because the original sheath became loose... tried to fix it with the heat gun and really only made it worse.

Here is the 3/32nd necker in blue. I love love love how this feels in the handle. You get a positive grip with 3 fingers, and it will make a great EDC utility knife.

This is the 1/8th necker in orange. Again, feels GREAT in hand, and I love how the orange in orange is obnoxious :D

Here is the new sheath for the bushcrafter, great sheath lockup and no play. Gotta love it!

It seems my sheath-making has gotten a lot better, and I've dialed in the temperature to work the kydex at and how long to press it... all the little things that could only be learned through trial and error.

But um.... that's not all. If you want to know the REAL reason that this batch took so long... or at least, why it wasn't finished over the weekend.... I kinda went ahead and put the bandsaw to work on the NEXT batch and rough profiled, then ground everything 99% to 80 grit....

Too late for me now, any other beginners that read this... TURN BACK! SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!! SAVE YOUR LIVES!!!!

Thanks for reading guys, and thank you for all the support and answers you've given me!

you're screwed now, Wolffie!!!:D Way to dive into the next batch! I'm liking some of those profiles a lot, looking forward to seeing them come to life.

The second design from the left looks really good to me, and of course............yep, the wharnie is hot!!! Nice job.

!

As much as I agree with your advice... it's a couple weeks late and about $800 short... LOL. I'm hooked too. Just finished my second and am already sketching out more and waiting for kydex.

Your stuff looks terrific, Wolf! Looking forward to seeing the next batch! :)

Thanks jonny :D

Yep... I'm attempting some crazy things in this batch too! Tapered tangs, bolsters, hidden tang... A RECURVE! My oh my what have I done to myself lol

Edit: Good find there railrider, I did see him sell it in the exchange a while back and was VERY tempted to snatch it up, just didn't have the funds at the time. Very wicked pendant though

Those new profiles look wicked. I'd be more scared of the hidden tang than the recurve. That's something I'm yet to attempt.

Are you going to WIP this batch too.

thanks tim,

I've learned a lot in terms of design for my next batch, I've tried to integrate a lot of the advice and info I've gathered here to make better looking, feeling and more usable knife profiles.

I will probably put up a WIP for that batch too, not sure when though. School starts up next week so updates would be very sparse until december =(

looks great wolfie...

I love the kitchen knife looking thang.. :D.. can't wait to see that one..

Maybe just maybe I can finish my first knife!!!! I have so many things that keep me from it..

soon man soon, these knives are really encouraging.... I have a bunch ground and sitting in a coffee can :(

great job !!!

btw what have you decided to use for gluing the slabs..... ??

Thanks rob!

I'm using the kms tools house brand of slow-cure epoxy. I did a few "glue wars-esque" tests of my own and it had quit good results when left to cure for 24+ hours. Once I've used it all up I'll be switching to a west-systems epoxy, since I just recently found out in another thread that lee-valley sold it all along haha

Wow, I'm so impressed.
I was about to make some suggestions on handle shapes when I saw the second batch. Really really nice and RAPID evolution. I wish my progress was a fast! And your finishing work on the steel, I envy. The little wharncliff and blue knife are sweet, and I'd like to be able to do kydex as well as you. I'm using a toaster oven and a homemade "press", but the stuff is unruly.

Kydex takes a lot of practice Daizee! I use my kitchen oven and homemade doorhinge/plywood press and while it isn't pretty it gets the job done. Thanks for the comments!

homemade doorhinge/plywood press

*lol*

exactly what I made.
Only yours seems to have magic kydex pixie dust.
