In May of last year I sent a USPS Money Order to Texas--priority mail with delivery confirmation. It vanished. Weeks later the delivery confirmation information still said that it was at my local PO and had never left the state.
I had to go to that PO with the stub from the MO, fill out an "investigation" form, pay $5, and wait until 60 days past the issue date of the MO. At the end of that period, since the MO hadn't been cashed, I received a cheque in the mail from the USPS.
If you pay by MO, you keep the stub for this very eventuality. It's a pain in the neck, but cheap insurance.
