Witness the power of BJJ in a fight

I think one of the best reasons for training some sort of ground fighting is to learn how to effectively, and quickly, get back to your feet if that's where you want to be. But also how to survive and function on the ground. For example, lots of people train how to draw a weapon such as a folder or a less-than-lethal weapon from the standing position but this should be practiced from the ground as well. It pays to be able to function where ever you end up.

BJJ is a big part of our training but I use it more for actually controlling and transition to a more dominant position. I get most of my subs from side control. I 'm a better ground fighter than a striker but a thai leg kick will change most peoples minds about causing any crap. BJJ defo has it's place but like any style if's not the be all and end all.

Maybe that's because you're not learning the complete system, just certain moves that allow you to as you say control position, it is however a complete self defense system.

maybe? we learn 10th Planet jits which I think is focused more around MMA. My coaches jits is off the charts - here are some of his vids:

He's awesome with his hands but he's put a lot of focused on BJJ for the last 5ish years. I'm the crash test dummy and some of my not so favourites are The Truck, the Electric chair and the mounted triangle. Those are uncomfortable and the mounted triangle makes you sleep quicker than a tranquiizer dart.

Here's him showing some technique

Oh Eddie Bravo, I'd hate to tell you this but Eddie is not very respected by the Gracie family and to most BJJ purist his names for the moves are a big joke. Nothing against your coach or anything.

Yeah actual Gracie Jiujitsu is quite different than sport Bjj, it's all self defense oriented moves, the Gracie Academy up here in Torrance CA really frowns on their people competing in sport Bjj. My sensei was a former orig. Gracie academy student from Rio Brazil and when he came to the US he actually taught at the Torrance Academy for about two years so he knows and teaches both self defense and sport BJJ.

I did kungfu for years and respect the traditional aspect of things but I just want to know what works. They can call the moves what they want!

First link I posted is broken. Here is a better one of "that fight going the other way"

Yeah he should have released the guard plus you have two trained fighters, I guarantee you if it was the street it would be a different story. If I'm on the street I'm not fighting off my back, I'm going to work very hard for either the mount or knee (top position) on the stomach, the rest is all elbows and punches or a rock to your head. If you don't have major grappling training you're going to have a major problem.

It's very dangerous when fighting an experienced fighter to release your guard. It opens you up to all kinds of trouble. I agree with you on not fighting on your back in a street fight. That is pure defense and counter when you are on your back and you always have the upper hand when you are putting the pressure on not the other way around.

In general but look at the alternative to what happened when he didn't. Plus he could have released and either come back with a Thai knee or punches.

I read about a street fight Matt Serra was in a few years back. Was a road rage thing if I think and the guy was big- like 220-240. Serra has good stand up training and I think blasted a leg kick and the guy laughed. I think they mixed it up some and Matt was not having his way with the stand up game, took him down and it was game over.

You don't see many strikers that want to bang with people with a big weight difference. In my ground experience, somebody better have a better BJJ than me, be a real good wrestler or judo player. Folks who can counter BJJ have studied BJJ.

I also think there are a lot of good BJJ instructors out there. Eddie Bravo came out of the Machado camp if I remember right and he choked out Royler at Abu Dhabi a few years ago.

crazy horse is known for having the worst submission defense in the game. He hits hard though. He is also known for...

"Bennett was arrested for domestic dispute and faces several charges including strangulation."
Bennett also claims that ground fighting "is like making love, it's not real fighting."

I was just watching some UFC (from 07) and I have NEVER seen anyone throw elbows like David Loisaeu! After loosing the first round and a quarter, he split Evan Tanner's face open with massive, vicious elbows; and because of the cuts Tanner incurred (about 4 or 5 in 30 seconds) the fight was stopped.

BJJ is a good thing but its street applicability against multiple opponents is lacking.

While you take one of the attackers to the ground the other kicks your head in.

Also... Try doing those ground moves on pavement. Not so fun.

Yeah but odds are it's going to the ground anyway and for me I'm going for either the full mount or knee on the stomach so I'm at least somewhat in an upright position.
