women and knives, are we freaks?

Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

I still have at least one Hoffritz knife, an Italian picnic knife: long blade, serrated blade, and a tiny fork on the other end. There were a couple of their stores I used to pass by a lot, and stop in when I got the chance. Great, tempting window displays, whenever I had the money for them :D

I notice that this thread has brought a couple more women out of lurking mode and into participation in the forums......How cool is that?

I think women who don't carry knives are freaks...guys too
It's fun to talk to sheeple people, but fortunately everywhere I hang out, people know I am a knife nut..

I have given my mom a knife to carry and am looking to set her up with a pistol too.. Women and Men should carry knives and those who don't... Well they can start opening letters and boxes with their teeth :D

Welcome to the Forums...

did the above contribute?? I am going to get coffee

I just want to thank everyone so far for the support and the feed back. For all you women who came out of the wood work and replied.... Wow, it pleases me to find kindred spirits. Thank you

For all you men who honor us woman with your support (and the occational purchase of a new knife now and then :D ). THANK YOU

I am not a new Knife chick. I've carried for years, but I didn't show growth and interst in furthering my collection, until I ran back into an old friend of mine from high school who shared with me his passion for knives. Now I'm not just carrying I'm resurching and beginning to make my collection grow.

I'd appreciate information. Knowledge is power, and I'm not supper familiar yet with a lot of different types of knives. I've found for myself that I like folders. I can conceal a six inch in my bra and wouldn't blink twice at doing that durring the times I can't carry my gun, or that I want to "dress" up and tuck my shirt in, so to speak. You know, the night on the town, party dress nights. Can't always carry a gun, but can always protect myself!

Around here (South Dakota), women carrying knives are not unusual. Heck when I moved here 11+ years ago my 64 year old female real estate agent turned out to be packing a snub 44 special :) Crime here is nothing like Kalifornia where I moved from (thanks BRAC!) and for reasons that (given the above) ought to be patently obvious.

But I will say one thing, you have got to be a tad uncomfortable concealing a 6" blade that way. I routinely carry a 7" OAL fixed blade in a front pocket slip pouch, but that's a lot different from what you've described.

Bets are that the intolerant weasels you've run into are urban coasties, east or west. Yes?

Danka. Mine has one 2.5" blade, one bottle opener screwdriver, one wickedly hooked can opener blade and there is this strange spike that opens out the middle of the back, so with the other blades closed it looks like a letter "t" or a push dagger. No clue what that is for... it is very thick and is beveled on only one side at maybe a 45 degree angle like the blade out of a plane (for shaving splinters off a hunk of wood?) Has black textured sides, and all the blades are coated with black teflon, despite them being made entirely of stainless steel. I've never seen anything like it, except maybe a Richartz Structure maxi 5. So, besides the sentimental value, I don't want to loose it and am reluctant to let anyone borrow it (also a bit paranoid they'll chop the end of their thumb off like I did once... I keep it stropped on an 8000 grit Japanese waterstone I picked up about a dozen years ago. :) )

Ain't that the truth! We have a regular topic that comes up around here, like "what's the craziest thing someone else has done with one of your knives?"

You're welcome. I've dropped in here off an on for about a year (mostly in the maker's forum looking at pics of guys hammering on things ^0^), but your post got me to register.

While I have been contemplating getting a good deba so I'd have at least one good knife in my kitchen, I'm not so much interested in knives as I am steel. My brother was a welder and drug home everything from brass to O1 to A2 to stainless and I read his machinist's handbooks (hey, I'll read soup cans if I'm bored) about how they used to use scrapers on babbet metal bearings and how tools and dies were made. It is just mindlessly fascinating how those little details, that hardly anyone pays any attention to, made the industrial revolution possible. And, it is amazing how metals can have so many different properties, depending on tempering and a few minor impurities. Like, how come some metals will polish up nice and some won't, why do some chip and others fold, why is BG-42 so stubborn to sharpen and how come M2 laughs at my waterstone? Would like to get a knife made of ZDP-189 and Cowry X just to compare them with other steels, but figure it would be crazy to spend so much on a knife made of them just to satisfy an idle curiosity.

Not to say that I don't appreciate a good tanto...

The activity in the hamon reminds me of Hokusai's block prints of a stormy sea http://www.andreas.com/hokusai.html Or that I don't "ooh" over Glen Water's knives http://www.glennwaters.com/AvailableFuRaiJinAutomatic.htm ,though I wouldn't know what to do with one except put either of them in a glass case with a spotlight on it :)

>>Return the favor once in a while and you will have a friend for life :D Men like receiving gifts also :D :D

Now I'm not just carrying I'm resurching and beginning to make my collection grow.

>>Life sure is good, isnt it? I am 'back into blade-fever' myself also since a few weeks and already spending money i havent even earned yet

>>Hmmmm. When wearing a dress, wouldnt it be easier to have a blade (folder or short fixed) strapped to the inside of your leg? Concealing a six inch in a bra sure does not sound comfortable. OR easy. But what do i know about that... i am male. :p

To those of you who are now questioning how a woman can conceal a 6 inch in her bra, and whether its comfortable or not. If you really must know its not un-comfortable. I've carried a Voyager X2 there all day and never noticed it. The curve is perfect and rests easily at the bottom of the bra just like it was a part of the bra. It doesn't bite or cut into me, and it conceals completely even with tight fitting shirts. I'm sure your now thinking I'm a large woman. On the top I'm larger than some but not huge, and the rest of me is avarage size 12 not large. So you see even "normal" people can amaze you with what they can conceal. It also makes you look twice at others and wonder what exactly they are packing around and where! :) A knife straped to my leg would be fine, and then I could carry a good fixed blade. I've thought of this, but depending on the length of your skirt and what your doing it isn't always practical.

Also in response to the comment made about returning the favor and buying the men a gift or two.....Trust me.....I give gifts much more often than I receive them. (you don't have to believe me, but alas its true) I'm a sucker for seeing a smile on someone's face.

>>Thank you for clearing that, it was genuine interest. I will pass this information on to the girls/women i know who want to carry for selfprotection but never are able to really conceal it.

>>That makes two of us then :D I was ofcourse just kidding around a bit when i made that comment.

You sound like a sensible and independent woman. Much respect. Hope to hear more from you and the other female knifeknuts on this forum. Nice to hear some other insights into carry-and-conceal. Interesting indeed.

Sure - Just kidding....

I say anyone in this forum is a freak
:D

Carry on sista'

Yuzuha, That funny spike blade is for making starter holes in wood for wood screws. You make an undersized hole in wood before you put in a wood screw. When you twist in the screw it will thread the hole by itself. The funny spike is an awl blade for making starter holes. In earlier times these blades were used a lot to make holes in leather. Since we don't use horses much these days we have fewer leather saddles and harnesses that need repair. The awl blade can add a new hole in a belt.

Absolutly not... A women that carries a knife, (or two or three), is simply smart. Just tell the naysayers that you are much less likley to get raped.

Keep on carrying!
Charlie

My grandmother had a nice German folding hunter with stag handles, my mother carried a small Kershaw lockback or a SAK, they were both very fine ladies.

Interestingly enough neither my grandfather nor my father carried a knife regularly.

CHUCKBUCK: My knives are a limited run Calypso Jr. Lighwht w/ a gray handle and a Delica (both plain edge)

PARATROOPER: Good luck I don't use rope, I use non furry handcuffs!

I'm a guy and I also have been frowned upon in certain circles for carrying a knife. I think that many people understand that people carry smaller SAK's or other slipjoints, and they expect that all knife carriers carry those, so to find out that their expectation isn't true takes some adjustment in their thinking. So, I'd agree that it's not just a gender thing, However, I think those people are more surprised to find a woman carrying a "tactical" folder instead of the expected 2" SAK.

These attitudes continue to disappoint me, but I'm coming to terms with it. The thing that bothers me is when someone says "what do you need a knife for?" then ten minutes later you see them reaching for their keys to open a box. You offer them a knife instead. They use it with the instructions to "be careful, it's sharp" and it works very well, (like a lightsaber since most people are used to using exceptionally dull knives). Then the same guy will still think you're a freak for carrying a knife even though he's used it and it worked for him.

In many cases, people don't understand because they choose not to.
