women and knives, are we freaks?

I've found for myself that I like folders. I can conceal a six inch in my bra and wouldn't blink twice at doing that durring the times I can't carry my gun, or that I want to "dress" up and tuck my shirt in, so to speak. You know, the night on the town, party dress nights. Can't always carry a gun, but can always protect myself!

Really large folders are wonderful! They let you pack a scary amount of blade into a very concealable package. I got started with the REKAT Sifu, then graduated to the Camillus Maxx Bowie when that became available. These days my primary EDC is a Camillus Aftermath.

You should give the Camillus Maxx Bowie a try sometime. It's amazing how thin that thing is, since there's nothing there but frame and blade, but it is also one of the strongest folders I've handled. It's a versatile utility knife, but it is also hard to beat a 5-1/2" bowie with double-guards if you ever need it for trouble.

Something else I'd like to suggest you look at is the HideAway Knife. It was designed by a woman for extreme concealment and is available with more than a dozen different sheath styles, including one that attaches to a bra. Frontsight, the woman who came up with it, is a very cool person and an amazingly clever designer.

As for not being able to carry a gun everywhere, I imagine you mean legally, and not just practically? Sometimes I wear clothes that won't conceal my H&K P7M8, but I can (and have) hidden my Kel-Tec P-3AT (.380 ACP) under a pair of swimming trunks. (It was sealed in a small zip-loc bag...) The only time I go unarmed is when I'm going somewhere firearms are prohibited.

BQUINLAN: Thanks for the info. I know what I'll be doing tonight while I'm online! :) (searching out new knives, in case it wasn't obvious!!! :D

A buddy of mine is going to a local knife store here soon and I'm thinking I'll have to catch a ride with him. He's got several knives that he would let me try out for a bit to see if I like the feel and the way they conceal. Once I get some questions in my mind I'm sure I'll be asking.....

As for always carrying. I always have something as well even if it is my leatherman, which my work doesn't want me to carry either! I tell you what they are insane. Because of me they now have a policy in effect that "absolutely" no weapons of any kind on your person or in concealed in your purse! They list eveything out....its like the airplane reg's. What a joke, if we ever get tied up and taken hostige (doubtful, but hey its a bank and around here they get hit all the time!) then we'll just have to sit in our cozy corner and say "Gee I wish Wendy had her knife or leatherman so she could get us out of here"

Ok, ok I know it isn't likely, but just think....if it did, wouldn't it be nice to be a little prepared? Isn't that part of "self defense"? Self Defense isn't just being prepared to kill someone should they try and attack/kill you.

To me it's even worse than that, you don't have a handy tool for work because you could possibly use it as a defense weapon. I'm sure you have policies against defending yourself already, most companies do. Yet you can't open boxes and such because of the stigma attached to a knife.

I carry mine because a knife is one of the most basic handiest tools, not necessarily as a weapon of self defense. I would use mine to defend myself if I really really had to but from reading forums it seems like a knife is a risky weapon to use without training and a liability to you if you really have to use one. Just look at the instances where this has happened. A gun is a much better self defense weapon but who can carry a gun to work!

I guess what I'm trying to say is I will use mine to defend myself if I have to but my main purpose are the other uses I find for a knife. I do admit I feel vulnerable and naked without one as I don't even have a last ditch emergency plan then.

Where I work if you are involved in an altercation then you will be fired weather it was your fault or not. THis actually happened several years ago when one nurse attacted another nurse. The attacker had other incidents in their file but both were filed. It's a blissninny knee jerk reaction. Remember we have been brainwashed in our courtry to "not resisit" even though the facts have proven that women who reisist an attact have a better outcome than one who simply gives up. It didnt' make it too hard for the 911 attackers to hold a plane full of people hostage with only a boxcutter.

I guess my point is the work knife policy goes much deeper than simply "carrying a knife". It's a whole pacifist mindset in which you no longer have a right to rely on yourself or be independant.

damn i wish i had a girl who carried knives... or could appreciate knives at all. thats like a fetish...

damn, come over to my crib baby...

mmmmhmmmmmmmm you know you want to play with my big hard ratweiler... my desert dagger is so baaad.... oh yea... flip my benchmade baby...

and i can shave you with my straight razors :D :D

I already have a camp tramp howler and coot. I also flip a benchmade pretty good one-handed. Thanks anyway though.

Gotta respect and admire a lady with a blade. Those boo hoo poor me helpless gals need to take a lesson.

Quite frankly, I wonder why more women are not into knives. Knives appeal to a huge variety of people from all over world, in all cultures and throughout time since that first stone blade was knapped. Primal.

I'm a normal female who carries on my person at least two knives at all times. One of which is concealed and one that is clipped to my waist band or pocket.

My issue lies with all the ignorant people out there who think that a woman with a knife is a freak. That we are something to be feared and something to be ridiculed or made to feel stupid. ( I have an indepth posting about this w/ in the Spyderco forum: titled knives and women who carry them. Should you want more detail about my story)

The question I have is why are we any different then a man who has a knife? Why are we "freaks" when we pull out our knife to cut open a bag of jerky? Can we not take care of ourselves? Funny, its ok for us to use "kitchen" knives, to cut onions for dinner, steaks for our family.....but God forbid we "carry" a knife and use it outside of the kitchen!!
Well I’m a female who loves knives. I think some of them are works of art, and I carry at least one most of the time. Mostly folders but occasionally I’ll carry a fixed blade, because I just love them and use them. Not for anything bad just work and stuff.

I almost started a simular thread! I'm a chick and have the same problem. I work around mostly other women in a hospital setting which makes it worse. The gun collection doesnt' help either! I feel like I'm a target for false accusations because of political correctness and the fact I work with what seems like an inordinate number of mentally imbalanced women. I only have a cricket and jester at work, mostly the cricket. Sometimes I wear a larger folder clipped to my scrubs. I carry a small student backpack which includes various items like cosmetics, other essentials, and a prybar. I have an SAK in there also, I find the tweezers and maginfying glass very useful!

There are a couple of men but I don't think they have a knife. I don't see why it's not more common, I use mine hourly opening boxes, scraping labels on tubes so I can see the specimen, ect.

It's even worse than that though, I actually have quite a collection of "sharp jewlry". I decided to seel a few things I didn't really use and I used the battlerat money to get two more knives!! YIPPEE! I saw them posted on e-bay while I was gathering data for selling my "Q" knives and saw a couple of sydercos at decent prices. I put in the lowest bid on both thinking I would be outbid but I WON!!! I needed more knives like I needed a bigger mouth and told myself I would sell one to my neighbor. Of course that's not happening!!! I got a native III and a delica with a black blade!!! My only regret is that I did not get one of them in full spydiedge, I'll just have to impulse buy something like that when my "Q" 's sell! I carried them this weekend under my scrubs just to test how they carried. The delica is unnoticable! The native was a larger lump but not uncomforable. They both carried better than my benchmade 705 and leeks. Those two tend to slip off the waistband. The native was most secure for waistband duty.

I don't think you're wierd.
I carry a couple of Spyderco. A Para 3 and a Tenacious on different days. I really love to also swap in one of my Benchmades as well and all carry great in my pocket. But I also love my Barkriver knives, just because they are works of art. M

I must agree with opinions above. Unless it's something really inappropriate for situation like carrying huge combat knife without being in combat situation (that's quite freaky even for men), it's okay.

Here's a work of art: My grandson's Carothers UF2 in stonewashed D3V steel with full double grind and Cocobolo scales with blued titanium fasteners.

My girlfriend's work knives. She also keeps a small wetterlings hatchet, a barteaux machete, and a silky big boy saw for her invasive species removal at the state park where she works.

Welcome to Bladeforums! I'm pretty much 100% positive that no one here will think you're wierd for being a female and carrying knives. In fact, women into knives become some of the most popular people here very quickly throughout the past decade and a half that I've lurked these parts. And in everyday life I think a ton has changed in recent years and very few find it strange. I say carry whatever you want to carry and try not to let what others think of you bother you!
