Wondering what Sal carries?

It's good to hear the man himself has a love for the Stretch. It's my favorite Spyderco and one that isn't talked about often enough.

One of the most useful blade shapes I've used. It's slices like a king, and gets the hard work done like a fixed blade.

I would assume he'd carry one of his own custom models...maybe a one-off custom...and then whatever production fits well in his back pocket.
Me...I'll carry a Military to the grave....along with several others :)

I have no idea what Sal carries, but I know what he should carry: An original Manix souped up with M4 or M390 steel, CF scales and a massive needle-bearing pivot.

You know... I have been wondering this myself for a while. I'm sure that like the rest of us... he's got a Spyderco that happens to be his favorite model (though I hope it's a Paramilitary 2).

The Stretch has been on my WTB list for a while, cool to hear it's one of his favs.

On the spyderco website there is a mention in the description of the Stretch that it was invented because it is what the owner wanted.

A para 3 with a hypertension lock, g13 obsidian scales, and CERN-1978 steel forged in the super-heated magnetic fields of Mt.Geneva.

i heard different. he was carrying cold steels and BMs, but all had their thumb studs removed and had holes in them. handles were thined to less than 1 cm and weight down below 5 oz.

Sal has access to whatever he wants to carry. He does like some models like the Stretch, and Caly 3.5 ( don't we all?). What I wonder is what kind of one offs and experimental models he has made up to try but didn't work out for whatever business. I recall several years ago in a forum thread about 20CV he admitted to having tried it out rears before. He likely was using and carrying 20CV years ( a decade?) before this current trend of M390/CTS204P hit.

Sal is a steel junky, no question. He sure didn't begin the mule team project for profit or convenience . He was a heater and beater ( Forging knives) in the days back when he had time as well, so he knows steels and knows what he likes and looks for in steels and designs.

I often wonder what kind of "reference library" of knives Sal has there. It must be impressive even if Sal isn't a pack rat type personality. I for one would love to get a look at it. It would sure be better than a day at the art, or science museum. Up there with the USAF Museum in Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton Ohio.

That reminds me Sal, if you see this. I asked a sales person at the SFO if they had any of the old Seki Cut, or other knives Spyderco used to import. I've been looking to buy a SRS 15, High Speed Bowie ( 9.5" blade) for years and it's becoming as big a quest as the "V" steel Sportsman 2 was. It's no longer made in that steel, having gone to D2 Equivalent.I know Spyderco used to important that one in particular. No, I'm not looking for a donation, just a regular sale at today's prices. The sales woman was professional, but you might imagine she likely thought I was a few cards short of a full deck. I don't think she knew what Seki cut was, or that Spyderco was an importer in days past.

If there are any old non spyderco's laying around please give thought to getting them out to us fans. Heck, non needed experimental models, etc.

Thank you,

Joe

no one's suggesting he doesn't really carry a knife in his pocket and spends his time either behind a desk or puttering around a shop? he is, after all, a knifemaker.

As I understand his role, Sal is a user more than a maker. As a user, he has strong ideas about what works. The earliest Spydercos were made in Japan.

At the IWA show in Nuremberg, I saw him carrying a CF UKPK. His choice was undoubtedly influenced by German knifelaws.
I carried one as well...and a Ti UKPK.

Hi Joe,

Your showing our age, ;) They're hard to find. They were a G.Sakai "experiment". We had them for a while. I don't know that there are any around, but I'll check.

As far as my carry, I usually rotate daily. I like the Millie at home, but now it's too large for Denver. Prototypes are often carried to test function and ergos. Both Eric and I have to carry all protos enough to get a feel for the "spitit" of the model. I also try to be legal with my carry, so some countries are Slipits.

Models that get a fair amount of carry time: Caly 3.5, Stretch ZDP, Native, Delica FRN ZDP, Endura where legal. Almost always have a Manbug with me, but waiting for the ZDP. Today I carried a D'Allara (working on a "3"). P'kal where necessary. Para 2 also. Everything gets carried some.

Well there you have it.

I carry a different knife pretty much every day. I can only imagine that a knife lover that owns a knife company carries just about everything.
