Woodcraft/Utility Knife Challenge

Nice Dan, thanks very much for the link.:thumbup: Gonna check it out right now.

I just watched part of the video posted on the picture thread.

With most of the knives, his fingers were all over the blade, including the point, he kept them away with Ban's edge...

He called the edge unreal, said it was the best or one of the best cutters, he said the handle was small for him but it fit well despite that and he had nice things to say about the sheath also.

I think that bodes very well for the results, everything was positive. It's going to take a knife that does everything great to beat it.

Knife tasks

* Shelter Material procurement. (Push cuts through sapling, tree limb cuting, etc)
* Cordage Cutting (push cuts through various types of cordage)
* One stick Fire (light battoning, shaving with edge and spine, fire steel strike)
* Figure 4 Trap Carving (carving and knotching)
* Spoon carving (extended carving and whitling)
* Bow Drill Fire Construction (light battining, drilling, carving)
* Food Preperation (slicing meat, tamatos, Peeling potatos etc..)
* Small Game Processing (this all depends on what I can get my hands on.)
* Tent Pegs (whittling both soft and hard wood pegs. one side to a point, the other with a knotch)
* Long term whittling. (whittling a 3" diameter section of wood to nothing in the hammer grip with and with out a glove on)

Going trough these tasks, it seems to me that slicing and cutting is essential!!:D:eek::D;)

Now I'm hoping for top 3 in the contest.

Looks like Andy Roy is the one to beat after some of the results of the knives are out. I't might be a tall order since two of the testers wanted to buy Andys challenge knife

Andy makes a awesome knife so I am not at all surprised.

Me neither. I've been planning to pick up a Bushfinger for a while now, after my Hunter order from him comes in and I get a BT4 and Pikal from Ban :D

Spent most of yesterday getting caught up on the challenge and I have to say, it was a great read!!! I think there were some excellent contenders and Ban has to have one of the top positions with his entry and it's "stupid sharp" edge. I look forward to seeing the final results! All the participants should be extremely proud of their work...even those guys who entered "ugly" knives!;):D:thumbup:

Great rewiev for the BT4:

Bantang Knives.

I always wondered what “stupid sharp” meant, and now after using this Bantang knife, now I know. This is hands down the sharpest knife I ever have used. Couple that with the edge holding ability of the CPM-3V he used, it will probably degrade to just a good working edge sometime around the year 2036…

Congrats !

Tonym just posted his review, he's REALLY impressed with the edge :)

The thread is locked, but it's this post.

The handle length issue might just be a result of his having large hands. Someone needs to bold "Ban Tang" :D

I'm glad to see the review.

You got high marks except for the handle length and sheath.

I think you're going to finish top 3 or 4 because it does everything well to excellent.

Congratulations Ban, you're on par with the best bushcraft knives with a modification of your "production" BT4.

Tonym actually said the kydex was good, he's just not a kydex guy.

I agree though: I think you'll finish in one of the top spots, Ban.

I am relieved to hear that the Choil-less BT4 held its own. I think that it did a pretty bang up job considering that it was not designed ground up to be a bushcraft knife. I just happened to be starting a Choil-less version of the BT4 right towards the end of the Bushcraft Challenge.

Thats the same thing I have been thinking all along. That this knife wasnt even designed by you to be a bushcraft knife. It shows how versatile your designs are. Imagine if you designed it from the ground up.

i agree with Nate Ban.. that BT4 did great man.. it is such a versatile desgn.. it sounds like they all loved it.. Tony did claim it was the sharpest knife he had ever used...:D
