Wooden Wednesday - Traditionals only please

Wood (I have no idea what kind) on brick-and-wood. One of my brothers gave me this a while ago after carrying it in his toolbox for decades.

Definitely macassar ebony. Buck used that on the 110 from the early 70s until some time in the mid-90s (I think 1994). An old timer with Buck once said that the shipments of wood would arrive from SE Asia with huge cockroaches.

Thanks for the interesting info, lambertiana. When I first got this knife from my brother, knarfeng provided some links on dating Buck 110s, and I'm convinced mine was produced in 1967, which is before the macassar ebony date you mentioned. Did Buck use different wood before the early 70s?

You might ask that question on the Buck Forum. Some of the members who post there have incredibly detailed knowledge of the various details which can be used to date an early Buck knife.

I browsed around in the older posts in the Buck forum, and found references to Macassar being used as early as 1966. Someone said that they used macassar from the beginning of 110 production until 1994.

Yours sure looks like macassar.

Sheesh! What wonderful wood; I think I covet every knife posted here so far today!:thumbsup::thumbsup::rolleyes:

Like oldtymer, I have an Otter Messer with me this week. His is a classic Ankermesser, while mine is a humble work knife (Arbeitsmesser?)

Please

Please tell me about that beauty!
Hi Clay. It's a 255111EO in cocobolo. The eo is totally superfluous because even with it the blade cannot be pinched open. Of course, the drop point blade in the 25 pattern makes up for deficiencies. I got it in a trade as a user and that's what it is. If you want to see the 25 in all its glory head to the thread "GEC 25 - Gots 'em?"
