When I lived there from 1978-1984, there was a long running movement to secede and form the 51st state, "Superior". The intention was to legalize gambling to generate revenue. At that time the only legal places for gambling were Nevada and Atlantic City. In fact the first casino I ever saw on Indian lands was outside of L'anse run by the Chippewas. It was a small cinder block building.I know that country reasonably well.....they keep trying to secede from the union.
Certainly, these days that might sense...
Close enough for me.Bamboo is a wood I guess

Got my engineering degree at TechI was born / raised in the U.P., got my engineering degree from Michigan Tech and will always consider the U.P. my homeMy wife and I have a home there that we plan to retire in as well, although that is quite a while away I'm afraid LoL. The U.P. was given to Lower Michigan as a consolation prize to settle a dispute with Ohio over a stretch of land called "the Toledo strip". The people that live in the U.P. have always felt isolated with little to no say in what happens politically for their own territory and the State government has always treated it like an amusement park. That's been the main impetus as to why they aspire to become their own State; to have the power to make decisions and manage their own land. The U.P. has a much better relationship with Wisconsin and would probably get more respect from the people in Madison than they do with the people in Lansing. We affectionately call people in "Lower" Michigan "trolls" since they live below the Mackinac bridge (Sorry Jer, James and GT)
Anyway, I got this beauty Marttiini curly birch knife from a Finnish shop in Marquette, MI.

That's why I was up there. Grew up in Detroit metro. Yup, I was a troll before the internet existed
The Keweenaw is a special place. My first winter there we got something like 384 inches of snow
Ohio got Toledo and Michigan got the UP. Michigan got the better end of that deal View attachment 1533558
