It is the second volume (first has been lost) of 1909 illustrated edition of "Mire megvénülünk" (By the Time We Grow Old), 1865 (in English: Debts of Honor) by the prolific Mór Jókai. In French litterature he could be compared to Balzac, though imho much easier to read.It may be a sin
