Amazing find and thanks for the background too. Why do I never find anything for 10€ in the way of knives ?This antique NYKC Hammer Brand two-blade jack knife, made after 1885 but before 1900.
Both blades were hand reground to a shallow convex with a ~30 degrees inclusive microbevel.
Blades were hand forged from crucible steel:
Old image of the New York Knife Company situated on the Walkill River:
I found this knife on an open air antique market in my home town on the bottom of a cardboard box filled with worn out junk knives, and it was inside the blue leather pouch also in the pics, which most likely kept the wood well protected.
Paid the massive amount of 10 Euro (about 10 US dollars) for it.
The steel grinds & sharpens quite easy like most 1095 steel, but it keeps a keener edge for longer.
Be the master of your fine collection Will. I will sit back and admire them.Going back & forth for some years about this. The Coco Ram Foot (right) is a beautiful example but I've yet to take it into use. Why? Well I have many users already and it might be a shame to start using this only to find It's not really suited. Why mess up a MIT (not the Uni...) that could be good trade or sale item. But then...the Coco will lose its lustre and go darker with use, so... And NO I'm not sending it to you to give me peace of mind
I'm going to at least put it in a pocket....it is Wooden Wednesday after all.
