It's end grain, so guess makes it look a bit unusual........ the with-the-grain looks quite different.

Interesting that Case doesn't specify the type of wood
I wonder if its American Chestnut? There was a lot of it harvested in Appalachia during that time period.

I have no recollection of ever reading about what wood was used. I know Case had other patterns with this wood and wished I had picked up a few pieces!!
