I'd heard that tapping Ti is tough but man, 3 taps?!?! Wow
Ya well remember it's a grade 5 Ti alloy that contains aluminum and vanadium to make it more wear resistant. Great for long lasting lock face geometry but hell on your tools. I did a little searching around here and apparently its commonplace to drill the tapping hole oversize to accommodate for the nasty properties of grade 5 Ti.
Also titanium work hardens the moment you drill or grind and ANY heat develops the work surface is significantly harder. That's why I always use tons of machine lube but sometimes its not enough.
