Woods knife- my philosophy.

That is extremely awesome, I hope to attain that level of skill someday. For now, I practice hard, but still have to use a medium sized knife.

Without being sarcastic......

I learnt knife and axe in scouts 45 years ago
This was before bushcraft had been 'invented'
We were taught well how to use knives and axes
We had the Camper penknives which was like the demo or scout knife
We had sheath knives with stag handles as standard
And axes from 36" fellers to hand axes
This included sharpening knives on oilstones and how to rehaft axes and hone them on a whetstone pedel wheel

So by 14, we had a skill set of how to use knife and axe as tools in the most safe way

I never had that opportunity. I do however learn a lot from books and Ray Mears :p

Great OP!!

As for the "It's the knife you have with you!" popular theory, I've yet to hear how one would be in the wilderness, either for recreation, where you would:
A.) Be able to carry a blade (i.e. the type of knife to survive after a plane crash is moot)
B.) NOT be able to choose what you have with you.

I agree with you 100% here. Although it is probably different for some who live in or next to the wilderness, I'm a good 30-45 min drive from the forest. Any trip I take will be planned. The knife that I have on me will be the one that I had planned on taking. I've never woken up and found myself mysteriously in the wild (I wish). :D

I also like at least 2 blades, the smaller being a Vic Huntsman or Farmer, and the larger being more robust such as a Spyderco Bushcraft, BR Canadian Special/ Lil Canadian, Fehrman Peacemaker, Fallkniven H1, something along those lines. I might take more if I'm backpacking into more remote areas. But I'll never be without my SAK, even in town!

You missed the fact that he uses an axe/hatchet. It's not hard to do almost all the work with just the axe. IMO an axe and a SAK is a complete blade system. And a good one.

Yep it's totally area specific. Where I live it's not uncommon to be hiking in the woods and end up in downtown or like I'll be doing this weekend in that I'll be camping and hiking along the coast and traveling through several towns and jurisdictions. I'll be bringing my fixed blade but the legality of the blade will be in question from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

there is a one knife fits all for me....after years of trial and error I have the best knife is this one...

some type of tool steel, 9-10 inches for the blade, thick at the spine, flat ground, sharp, comfy handle the rest of it is just frosting and marketing.

A complete blade system is the holy trinity:
An axe/hatchet, a sheath knife and a 'SAK'

A saw?? did someone say buck saw or folding saw......

I have literaly gone through about 15,000 dollars in knives in the past three years. Mostly Busse Combat, custom bushcrafter blades, and a few high end folders. All have been sold with the exception of a Koster Bushcrafter, which just got traded cause it was a bit thick for my slicing needs. Another that stayed was a Rat RC6. I had the RC 4 and Izula but I felt I could do everything better with the bigger blade with the exception of skinning small game.

I really loved my ten or so Laconico blades, but I could never keep them as sharp as he could make them, he is just fantastic with his conved edges. I hit a failure point and went back to a basic v grind or some of the knives he made me would have stayed. I do keep a smaller knife with me, a Fehrman Thru Hiker. I also have a folding saw and a camp axe. But if I had to choose only one, it would be my RC6. Big enough for splitting, thin enough for slicing, can choke up on it for fine tasks. There are others that were better for certain tasks, but this one did everything pretty well, and I'm all about versatility.
