Work Sharp Ken Onion edition is FREAKIN' AWESOME! Long Post

Mine should arrive today. By this time tomorrow I'm either going to have really sharp knives or really expensive toothpicks with really nice handles. :D

***ETA*** It arrived this afternoon. Unboxed and making little metal shavings in minutes. No expensive toothpicks, but I was able to get working edges right out of the box on a couple of old kitchen knives that wouldn't cut paper before. They can (and will be) refined further before I move on to the good knives.

I will need to refine my technique with practice, but I'm pleased so far. Money well spent, at least for me. Now I won't need to spend all day sharpening kitchen knives anymore & that's a good thing. :)

I really wanted one of these sharpeners for Christmas and was really bummed when I did not get it!! I had read a lot about the original Work Sharp and Ken Onion Work Sharp and know that the KO edition had really improved the tool. Well, my brother called me after Christmas and asked me if I had gotten one of the WSKO and I said no. He said not to and that one might be showing up soon:). I finally received my own few days later:). What a great gift!!I have to agree with the others here in saying how incredible this tool is. I have played at sharpening for a few years now. I have tried the Spyderco Sharpmaker as well as other methods, but nothing has worked, for me, as well and as easy as this system. I absolutely love it and so do my knives!! I will keep following this thread as your comments and suggestions are very helpful!

Great review Medic1210!!

I am eyeballing the WS on Amazon now, and I can get free shipping with prime. Should I go ahead and order the extra belts at the same time, or maybe wait? And in y'alls opinion, which belt would be the most used? As in, should I stock up on more course belts, or just get the package with all the extra belts?

For what it is worth StylistDave I did order another set of belts. The Ken Onion model will also send you a box if you register your new purchase on their website. Have fun

Great thread. Think I'm going to get me one. And Worksharp guys, kudos to your tech writer. Your on-line guides/manuals are very, very well done!

Just placed my order and also ordered the Work Sharp WSSAKO81113 Assorted Belt Kit. I've been using the Wicked Edge system but have not been altogether pleased with the results. Plus it takes forever to sharpen a knife with it.

Any other belts out there I should be considering?

Can it be used to maintain the edge on a small folder without toothpicking it? my BM griptilian is just a little too big to comfortably carry, so I have been meaning to get a leek or a spyderco delica but I'm kind of concerned about it eating the blade if used to maintain the edge.

OK, I've read the entire thread but I'm not seeing any details on the projected life span of the belts. How long are the belts supposed to last? Obviously there are a lot of variables here, but ball park? Should any attempt be made to clean them between uses? With a paper backing, obviously cleaning would be limited to relatively dry solutions...at least I'm guessing?

I can't say how long they last... I can say that getting a "sanding belt cleaner" block or stick that someone recommended in another post is worth it. Wish I'd bought one long ago. Really cleans a belt out... even my 6K belt, which was black (I was using compound on it to keep it going), looked almost brand new after just a few seconds with the cleaning stick. Works way better than I thought it would (on all the belts).

WorkSharp in one of the videos says the belts with the KO model will cut until worn to the backing.

Thanks much - I missed the earlier recommendation. Is there a specific model of belt cleaning stick you can recommend?

I don't know if there are different ones, or if there's any difference between them, (they all look the same to me)... I just got the cheapest one on Amazon. :)

Anyone know.if.they have a trade in.program? I have th original work sharp but would love this edition but I am not willing to buy it if I just bought the original less than a yeast ago.

I don't believe they do, but you probably wouldn't loose too much money if you put it up for sale here on BF.

OK - they appear to be in lots of different sizes and shapes but I went with one that was a "stick" with a handle. Thanks!

I've sharpened around 50 knives with mine so far. ...and I don't mean sharpening blades that just needed a little attention. At least 80% of the blades I've done so far were in very bad shape, some requiring 30+ minutes of attention. I don't have this down to a science just yet, so I'm still experimenting and learning and certainly not going at top speed. My point is that, with most of these blades, I've removed a significant amount of steel because these blades needed it. So it was a lot of work for the belts.

I've been using a cheap belt cleaning stick from Harbor Freight (I think it cost $7) after almost every knife and it makes a big difference in the appearance of the low grit belts and seems to improve their cutting power. So far my lowest grit belt (P120) gets the most use and I have a small area on that belt that I seem to have damaged that has no abrasive left. I'm pretty sure that's my fault as it's right at the edge of the belt and I think I pushed some part of the blade on a knife into the edge of the belt causing this. But it's a very small area... just a little sliver really. ...and it hasn't gotten bigger since I noticed it about 15 or 20 knives ago.

So I'd say the stock belts are going to last a while, especially if you're not like me and you're working on blades that have been cared for in any way. I'm looking to get some of the very coarse ceramic belts as soon as they are released so I can grind these blades faster and take the load off of the P120 belt.

Brian.

Great information Brian. Thanks much! I too look forward to some additional belts.

Years ago, I owned a Galco system. Cant find it, and I wanted to sharpen some knives, so I started looking around the marketplace to see what has been invented over the past 15 years. Lots!

First I purchased a Edge Pro knock off from Amazon. Amazon messed up, and sent me Ver I. In a couple days, I had both Ver I & the Pro version. A little hard to use, slow, tedious, Good results.

I hit Sears and purchased a wet wheel stone, and I pretty much totaled one knife. Have to know what you are doing on one of those.

I purchased a Full sized Norton tri stone, like a chef would own. This is the old fashioned way to sharpen a knife. A bit more than I want to learn, to master knife sharpening.

Mid week, I purchased a Spiderco Sharpmaker. This is a double rod system, where the precise angle is set for the user, and you have to do is concentrate on going up and down in a straight plumb motion.

This is easy to use, and gets pretty good results. This system was also one of the better deals, starting at about fifty bucks. Double that, to get harsh and extra fine rods.

Next was a system from KME. Has everything to get perfect results, if sharpening one knife, and eating up a couple hours, is in your evening plans. Like the Edge Pro, not a fast way to sharpen a dull knife.

Today Amazon arrives via UPS, and the driver drops of a Work Sharp Ken Onion Edition.

In one afternoon, I sharpened 10 of my knives to razor sharp, and also did several knives in my suite of shops for other shop owners. Incredible tool.

This knife has seen hard times. The edge shines like a mirror now, and it is razor sharp.

The winner, for me, between Spiderco, Edge Pro, KME, wet stones, Work Sharp and Galco, is Work Sharp. Hands down.

I chose the Ken Onion edition. Larger, more bells and whistles. About $150 on Amazon. They have a smaller version for about half the money.

This is a belt sharpener that turns slow, so the knife edge does not heat up, destroying the temper in the steel. This works just the same as the knife makers tools, only in a small affordable package.

WorkSharp puts a Convex edge on your knives, and some people feel, the round convex edge, is stronger, longer lasting, than a straight, or even a bevel edge. Jig sharpeners, as a rule, cannot do a convex edge. Hand sharpening can do a convex edge, as each pass of your hand across the stone, is on a somewhat altered angle, thus making the edge somewhat round. this however, is not a planned event, rather like a church potluck. Might be good, might be barely eatable. One time you get a sharp knife, and the next time, it is dull, or worse than before you sharpened it.

The Work Sharp Ken Onion edition, is truly wonderful.
