Worksharp Ken Onion Edition

the following is from Amazon. It implies that that the KO edition contains a different motor.

Adjustable Sharpening Guide provides fast, precise and repeatable sharpening results with no set up or calibration time
Variable Speed Heavy Duty Motor provides more power with improved cooling and the option of slow speed honing to high speed grinding
Multi-Position Sharpening Module for precision knife sharpening or various positions for a wide array of tools or detail shop grinding tasks
Scissor Sharpening Guide to restore scissors to like new condition with ease
Compact and portable design is optimum for performing tasks at or away from your workbench

does the KO edition have a more powerful motor?
Did you check post 35? Mine does not have a tag or plate on the unit with spec's. The KO is heavy duty compared to the first Work Sharp. This fits in the category of a tool that a professional would purchase who needed to use this all the time and not just occasionally. This is like a second generation on the market. The KO just seems well built.

Anyone know if a thicker knife like a Strider and Busse will fit within the guides and work properly with the WSKTS-KO? If so, I could certainly use one of these.
Thanks you.

Thanks you.

Just tried a Buck Strider and a ZT 0550 and they both fit with some room to spare. Hope this helps.

That's good to know, thank you...curious if a .250 blade would fit. Looks like an extremely useful setup and would be a lot quicker way to reprofile an SMF...my Sharpmaker takes forever even with the diamond rods.
I need one of these, sure hope thicker blades fit.

The opening at the top of the guide is approx. 1/4" . This opening is about 7/8" above where the belt would first make contact with the blade.

I just got off the phone with a nice gentleman from the Worksharp sales dept. He told me the majority of retailers will get the Ken Onion machines on or about December 1st. There are 3 national resellers that will be part of an early launch and they are getting them at the end of this month. Cabela's, Amazon, and a tool seller that I already forgot the name of (Northern Tool?).

Yep, Northern Tool & Equipment. I just got the email from Workshop this morning as I was on the notification list. The email said all 3 were taking pre-orders but I have not verified that.

is this something that can be used to add a swedge on a large knife like a busse battle mistress?

You can use the belt along any surface to remove material. Thinning out the spine should not be very difficult. Course belt to start and patience. Sharpens axes etc.

I had pre-ordered one from Amazon (one of 3 sources - also Cabela's & Northern Tool - all priced about the same). Just got notice that it should be here tomorrow but since I live far from civilization, that may really mean Monday.

Anxious to get it in. I use a combo of stones (raised on 'em) and a Sharpmaker, but was interested in the original Work Sharp. Some things that I didn't like about it that seem to be fixed in the KO version. If I get it in tomorrow, I'll post thoughts about it after using it some this weekend. If I don't get it in tomorrow, then it might be a week before I get a chance to put it to good use. :)

I hope it works great for you, I've be dying to see/hear how one of these would work for most of us that are not incredibly gifted when it comes to sharpening. I can put a nice edge back on my knives with my Sharpmaker (I have the extra diamond and Ultra fine rods) but I'd love to have something that could re-profile something like a Strider SMF without it taking hours or just sharpen my knives a lot faster. I've been looking into the KME Sharpener as well...
Best of luck!

I was going to wait and see if the price would come down a bit, but now that I know its available, I can't help myself.

I thought of buying a KO.
But I began to dive in the forum. Searching for the best way to sharp.
Worksharp machines have some things I do not like. Firstly is the lack of belts from regular shops. I do not want to depend on Worksharp and it is very expensive. And not variety of grits.
I like the universal 2*72 inches. Infinite different grit belts. Infinite branches and shops. Even leather belts. That is my main reason to reject the Worksharp.
Of course it is another machine. Bigger, heavier, not portable...
But finally I prefer a perfect cutting edge, versatiliy and a good supply of belts.

Just tried to order this but it can't be shipped to Canada. Why? Well Northern Tool called WS and they said they don't have French language on the packaging so no go for now. I guess I just might have to use my US shipping address but that requires a $150 ferry fare there and back. Nice, although I will be using it within the next 6 weeks so that may be my best bet. If there is a WS rep here please confirm. Maybe I can get it from ebay?

The WorkSharp folks are helpful by phone. You might try giving them a call to see what they suggest.

Andrew

I just did and they confirmed it. I will have to wait till the packaging is done for Canada, sounds like in the new year, bummer.
