Hehe. Actually, I wouldn't mind trying out any kind of meat though. This one wasn't dead and didn't really need to die either. I've got plenty food at home :)

Agreed.

Was your uncle trying to trap the Marten specifically? Or did it just happen to get caught in his trap?

He wanted to trap the animal that had killed one of his chickens a few days before. He used the head of that chicken as bait, and today he caught this Marten with it.
He's got a whole collection of stuffed animals, mostly of which were roadkill. He didn't have one of these yet and was thinking of keeping it, but thought it was too beautiful to kill just for that purpose, eventhough it killed one of his chickens. I agree with him on that, the thing shouldn't die just to be put on top of a cupboard while letting everything else go to waste. 'Revenge' for killing the chicken would have been pretty lame as well, since you can buy and replace them for pretty cheap.

He did kill a few foxes over the last decade or so. Once a red fox butchered pretty much all of his geese. He wasn't a happy camper that day, but he was when he caught it.

Gotcha, just wondered if Marten's were a common problem in your area or if it was just by chance.

And like you said, can't blame the Marten.... Chicken is delicious! :D

Not really, they don't really tend to go very close to houses or areas where a lot of people are concentrated. Sometimes I've heard from them killing a chicken here and there, but nothing spectacular. They're also known to get underneath the hoods of cars because it's warm near the engine. They do tend to wreck the tubing and often get killed in the process. What I found more spectacular was that a Least Weasel -which is what, 20cm long or so?- once had jumped in the neck of one of my uncles peacocks, killed it and ate out the brain. He caught it feeding and shot it that time. A 20 cm critter taking on a peacock, that's just beyond me :). Makes you think of what a Marten could do if it really wanted to.

True :D

My 4yo boy has pneumonia he spent last night in the hospital and tonight too they say :(

Sorry to hear about you boy. I hope he gets well soon. We'll send a little smoke your way just in case he needs a little help.

I'm sure he'll be back to 100% before you know it.

Absolutely. You can tell from the expression on his face that he isn't at all happy to be confined to that cage! Fierce little critter.

:emot-yarr:

Yeah, whenever you came close to the cage he charged. He wasn't too happy, but he will be now. He was released in a local forest ;-)

I always figured that, in event of emergency, it would be good to have a stove that could burn unleaded or kerosene.

My Dad always said the same thing, and we still have his old Coleman stove.

...and I can get them to throw in a remote starter, I believe it will be a done deal.

Speaking of Dad, when I was growing up in WI, he always had a remote starter for his vehicles... me. :D

Is that Sam Adams in a can??????? I spoke with a local brewer in Nashville and she was talking about the transition back to cans because they are easier to work with and keep the beer away from sunlight. Cool.

I'm sure the weight makes a big cost difference when you're shipping it by the semi-load, too. Like most, I prefer beer in bottles, but there are two problems... A) if you drink as much as me (only on days that end in "y"), the empties bin gets mighty dang heavy by the end of the month, and B) my faves aren't available in glass down here anyhow.

On a somewhat related note, plastic 1.75l whiskey jugs and 2l soda bottles make great, sturdy planters. Poke a few drainage holes and start your seeds/seedlings. When they start to get a little rootbound, you'll see it before it's a problem. Just snip the bottle away with a scissors and transplant 'em in the ground or a bucket. Less shock to the rootball than shaking 'em out of a normal planter.

Psy, smoke for the li'l one. Glad he's getting taken care of though.

Galeo, that is pretty cool actually. I've never even heard of a Marten before.

Biscuit, those are pretty funny! I like that beer opener.

Well, well, well! We just got my daughter's fall class schedule for her freshman year of high school. She's been accepted into honors geometry & honors physics!!
I knew somebody in our family just had to be smart. I just didn't think it was gonna be one of my kids!:D
She's been a pretty sharp kid for a while now but it's really starting to pay off. She got a scholarship to the best private school in Dallas & apparently they think she's ready for their honors program.

Needless to say, I couldn't be more proud of my babygirl!!!

Congrats man. It's good to see girls getting into the maths and sciences.

Ugh, I hate when a job goes that way.

I hear that. The bad thing is, if I decide to replace the whole thing, I have to scab 2x6's on the floor joists, to adjust the height. The flooring, a few layers from over the years, is about 1 1/2, to 2 inches thick. So, I have to raise each joist up, so the 3/4 T&G plywood matches that height. Pain in the ass.

smoke & prayers Psy!
RKM - congrats to the young lady and best of luck!

G-Shark - thanks for the Marten pic! a friend of mine spent most of a year on a mountainside tracking, observing, and cataloging different sorts of martens in Washington State over here.
