Worst Accidental Cut?

What is the worst cut you have ever accidentally received? Now don't be shy I'm sure we've all done it at some point, somehow, we just slip or lose our grip, or do something stupid, or are too slow or too fast and we accidentally cut ourselves. This is to share your stories and serve as a cautionary tale for anyone else so they can be more careful in the future, as well as merely to share some amusing stories and, if you really want, pictures.

Personally, my worst cut was on my Lone Wolf Longhorn I was closing it and for some reason I applied too much pressure on the back of the blade while my thumb was still holding the liner, and when I moved my thumb up and out of the way, I sliced the entire tip of my thumb open, seriously probably almost 3 millimeters deep and about half an inch long. Worst part is I hit the vein that runs into your thumb and that sucker bled like crazy. I had to superglue it shut and bandage it tight enough to stop the bloodflow. Even three days later it was still bleeding slightly. In retrospect I really should have gotten stitches, but it all healed up fine after a week and a half so I guess it doesn't matter now.

I don't believe in the idea that a dull knife is more dangerous then a sharp one, the ONLY times I have cut myself bad has been opening or closing folding blades. I have never cut myself bad enough to require medical attention, but I don't keep my knives razor sharp either.

The worst? Probably on a spyderco stretch that I never fully deployed. I guess it stuck half open and when I went to grip the handle my thumb found its self under the blade. *slice*

I think the nastiest one I've done was when I was test chopping some paper with my dads old fighting knife, chopped right into the tip of my thumb and the base of my index finger, can still see the scar around the big ol' flap i cut into it, had to have hit the bone..good times :D lol

Dont laugh, its the reason you don't let kids have knives. About a year ago I was poking my spyderco honeybee into wood when I was bored. I was sitting in one of those rotating chairs and I guess i spun and poked at the same time and turned the poke into a stab. sliced like 2 inches of my skin on my index finger into a little slap. Ended up just putting a glob of neosporin in it then wrapping it in paper towels followed by eletrical tape. I got a nice U shaped scare from my first knuckle to the tip of the finger now and cant feel anything in that area. I think it bruised the bone as well. It hurt like hell for about 2 months.

just finished sharpening one of my balis, it decided my fingernail needed a trim

The following may be the most stupid one ever!!

I got my thumb one day with my ER Dark Talon. I had just finished cleaning a pistol after a range trip, and decided to hit my knife with the silicon cloth since I had the blade in my pocket. I wiped down the handle, and then the blade. Just then my wife said something to me and while not paying attention I got the pad of my thumb. It is about 3/4" long and was down to the bone. I almost went to the ER for stiches, but then didn't. For two or three days after, it bled everytime I took the bandage off, then finally it started healing.

Funny part is that although the wifey is constantly telling me not to play with my knives, she was the one who distracted me and actually felt bad!!! She even ran to the store to get the extra gauze and med tape.

It is about 1/2" under a jigsaw scar from 8th grade shop class, and will probably be there for ever now...

Told you... this is the stupidest one ever... :)

I've posted this story before, but here it is again anyway.

Ok, so. One night in 2003 me and one of my Marine friends were sitting in my then girlfriends (now wife) room. She is a medic so she had this little med kit on the table with a knife in it. As I was checking out the knife my friend (who's a little stupid) jumped on me and pretended he was going to stab me in the face with it still in my hand. I had my left hand on his chest trying to push him off of me as hard as I could still holding the knife when he suddenly jumped off. Due to the sudden loss of strain I inadvertantly slashed my own hand open. Blood sprayed everywhere! I pretty much instantly went into shock and dropped the knife. My friend squeezed my wrist really hard and slowed the bleeding to a steady ooze. I then punched him in the face twice as hard as I could as I was a little pissed. My girlfriend wrapped my hand in a towel and being an ambulance driver got us to the hospital in just a few minutes. We got to the hospital at 2200 and I then saw several different doctors over the next couple hours and each one told me worse news. It started as "you may have nicked the artery, we'll stitch it up and send you home" but in the end it was "you severed the radial artery, radial nerve, vein, four tendons and destroyed the bursa sack, surgury is scheduled for the morning..." The blade went between two of the bones in my thumb and opened the joint right up. The nurse called the MPs and they wanted to arrest my friend but I told them it was a pineapple cutting accident. I ended up in a cast for a month then had to go to physical therapy for two months. To this day the back of my hand is numb from cutting the nerve.

I hope you enjoyed my story, don't play with knives when your around Marines.

Oh yeah, the little scar is from where they had to cut in to pull the tendons back down.

I had a clamp fail on one of my drill presses last year and sent a blank I was drilling out spinning like a lawnmower blade. This particular drill press didn't have a foot pedal and my instant reaction was to hit the off switch above it and in doing so, I put my hand square in the path of the spinning blade and it hooked me good. This drill press has a foot pedal now and ALL my clamps are routinely inspected more than ever before. Kinda hard to miss a paw this big....fortunately, I didn't hit anything to cause any permanent issues and it healed up fine although I do have a nice scar and a higher respect for shop tools than ever before. This is the only "ouch" I've had after building quite a few blades and that's enough.

Be careful out there!

It was a while ago. I had just gotten my first real bali, a Benchmade 47a. I did some basic flipping, no problem. I tried doing a few tricks and twirls through my fingers, and it fell out of my hands.

Now, normally, when I have dropped a knife, my immediate response is to jump back, throwing my hands and feet outwards and away from the knife. This time, my involuntary impulse was to TRY AND CATCH IT.

:foot:

It landed tip down into my palm, just below my thumb. The cut was only about 2 centimeters long, but it went all the way to the bone. What's worse, because it was below my thumb, the doctor's wouldn't put in stitches (in fear of scarring that would restrict movement), but I still couldn't use my thumb, so I walked around with my right hand curled into a fist for a few weeks until it healed. :grumpy:

god damn Canook that's hardcore! I'd have beat the stupid out of that friend of yours though.

I tried but I almost passed out. I got him pretty good in the eye and the ear. We later talked about how it would have been funny if I'd got him in the nose. He's broken it 4 times so it would have just exploded. I can imagine the peples faces in the ER, me with a cut off hand and him with smashed face, both of us dripping blood everywhere.

Man, these stories, especially the ones with pictures, are damn horrifying. Worst I've got is accidentally closing a slip joint folder on my index finger and having it bleed all over the place. I was at the in-laws' place and had to use the ol' super glue to patch.

Izula wrap, popped out of sheath during final knot...

Two fingers, 6 stitches, and one numb pinky tip.

Is it bad that I don't feel so stupid about my story anymore? Great stories and some of those pictures are grotesque. Great examples of why to be careful with your knives! Canook's story may take the cake though, but it's bordering on non-accidental due to a stupid friend haha.

I cut the end of my finger off, down to the bone, with a new electric fan I had just bought.

Told the story before. Stupid enough so I won't repeat it.

OUCH!!! did you miss the sheath while putting the knife back in or something? looks like the wound angles downward. Worst I've gotten was while sharpenning my RTAK. It had a small chip in it and the blade was slightly rolled on either side of the chip. I put a little extra force to try to straighten it an dit slipped off the rod and right onto my thumb knuckle closest to my hand. Cut a nice 1/4" flap down to the bone. I was extremely lucky since it just missed my tendon by about 1.5 mm. Bled like crazy. Flushed it out with some hydrogen peroxide and stuffed some neosporin under the flap and wrapped it with telfa-pads. Should have gotten stitches but the scar wouldn't be as cool if I did.:p:D

and someone (sorry I don't recall the name of the user), told this story about how he accidentally dropped his Falkniven while he was sitten down either sharpening or cleanin' it. The knife landed on his achilles tendon and literally sliced it.

He even showed us some pictures, honestly, that was the nastiest cut I 've ever seen.
