Worst Accidental Cut?

photo-3.jpg

Not practicing proper knife safety while pruning. Actual cut wasn't so bad, but the bleeding took an hour and a lot of paper towels to stop fully.

All in all a good learning experience.

I posted this elsewhere, but what the heck.

The moral of this story is - make sure the snap on your sheath is securely fastened when you put your camping knife away. Otherwise the next time you grab for it, this might happen...

It bled for about 3 days.

Funny I read this thread the other day and though "man I'm glad i haven't cut myself in a while"

i got my new kershaw breakout today, and because the grip is so thin I had my ring finger over hanging into the path of the blade when I closed it and sliced a nice chunk off the tip of my finger, its bleeding like hell every time I bump it still.

I intentionally loosened the Paul lock to see what my friend was talking about [ordered the same knife at the same time], as he said his developed blade and lock play shortly out of the box. Mine had come so tight I was under the impression it was pressed in. He insisted it screwed in and well, curiosity killed the..... finger? After rotating lefty loosey under as much torque as my fingers could apply to the lock, I saw what he was talking about. Well as I went to remedy the induced play, my left index and thumb got bit by a quality factory edge. Thumb wasn't bad but man that index finger bled and bled and bled. Tried everything my first aid training told me to, everything my emt friend could come up with, and two and a half hours later it was still pouring out. So to the er I went. Healed up nice, but I bet when that bill comes in I'll be wishing I'd gotten a set of needles, some mono out of my tackle box, and a fifth of whisky ha ha. Maybe they'll forget or write it off as pro bono? Who knows

The Paul defender lost its edc spot to my tanto seb, but I still love the knife. Hoping I can find someone willing to turn that ffg into a wicked stilleto de grind :D thinking ffg primary edge, and a symmetrical hollow ground on the top... no one will get back to me though :grumpy:

But I digress, not half bad for my first and only [knock on wood] knife caused cut, eh?

i got ahold of a fillet knife used at a chicken processing plant, well about 12 of them. I decided to get the rubber handles off them and attach some elk and deer horn to make some nice fillet knives to give to my friends. Well, I was working the last bit of rubber off the last knife in a vice and I had been very careful to keep the edge down and under the vice jaws just for this reason. I didnt pay attention and my hand slipped, there was just enough of the blade sticking out of the vice that as i punched the blade it went down to the bone. I was at a friends house, his wife is the athletic trainer for the school we teach at and of course she thinks we are idiots in general for the stuff we do. needless to say I was instructed to go to the hospital as the knife still had a small chunk of my finger bone on it. I didnt think it was necessary as blood was pouring out of my finger. I got the bleeding under control, slapped some super glue on it, threw some athletic tape on it. It took about 3 weeks to heal, 1.5 inch scar, no feeling in the top of my finger and a healthy fear of punching knife blades.

I had a Cara Cara lock failure through the knuckle of my trigger finger..."dangling" is pretty appropriate. Sucked.

I flipp my kimura latchless. For some reason my idiot self left it laying down in the couch it was about half open i sat on it and it went a half inch to my but. I got stitches i feel bad for the girl that had to look at it.

i was about 10 or so and using a sak to open a clam shell package, the blade slipped and went right into my pointer finger's knuckle. i still have the scar to remind me to keep my hands away from the blade.

I've never had a really bad cut from a pocket knife, say one that really wanted stitches. I get a nick every couple of years or so.

I've had several bad cuts.
--Had an older Spyderco Jess horn and was flicking it open while walking. I thought I had it fully open, but it was at a 90 degree angle and made contact with my leg. Straight through my jeans like they weren't there and 2.5-3 inches into my quad (doctors estimates). What hurt the most was when the doc had to "explore the wound".
--I was throwing my Spec-Plus SP-1 at a tree, which I had done successfully hundreds of times prior, and not paying enough attention. It didn't stick, bounced off the tree and nailed me in the left shin. Hobbled me good for about a week. That is an ugly scar, but fading.
--I was fire-side one night with a S+W Bushhog stuck in the ground after splitting some wood. I decided to take a load off, sat down on the ground, and put the bottom of my hand/wrist area into the blade. I was very drunk so it bled like crazy. It's about a 2 incher.
--Had one of my BM-42s reground by Tom Krien with a double edge. I knew it was a bad idea, but went with it anyhow. I thought I'd practice flipping with my left hand, and it didn't go too great for me. I'd say this was to the bone for sure.
--Worst was a Sog Desert Dagger. Had taken the top part of the sheath off, so the knife could be worn IWB. Unfortunately that left nothing at all for retention. (This was one of the later sheaths, with the Sog logo in the edge of the plastic/kydex). Anyhow, I put it on a wall mounted speaker for a moment and it started to fall. The knife was still near mint, so I didn't want it to hit the floor. I tried to stop it but all I got was sheath, and the knife was sort of flung out. My reaction was to grab for the knife with my other hand, and that was a mistake. It cut about 180 degrees around the inside of my left index finger right at the base. I had to go under the knife to have things reconnected. They cut me up the side of my finger to gain access, so it's a double whammy of sorts. They said the nerves would grow back, but it's still partially numb and there's pain occationally to this day.
--I also have a 2 incher running from my right ring-finger finger-nail to the middle nuckle. This was the first, and I should have learned from it probably. I was still a wee yoot, and we thought it would be fun to "sword fight" with kitchen knives. I remember telling the paramedics that we were breaking a Transformer and a piece of plastic cut me. -I don't think they bought it.
--There's several more, including a Coldsteel Peacekeeper to the forearm, and a small fillet missing from my thumb form a hatchet of all things. All I can say is that I used to drink heavily and was pretty careless with my sharp stuff, obviously. Sadly, this is nothing compared to the firearm mishaps I've made and witnessed. But no one ever got hit, thank God. -One of these days I'll get some pictures of my scars and try and post em.

I just saw that the first 5 threads shown on the general knife discussions page are:

What is a sharp knife to you?
Worst Accidental Cut?
EDC!-Which knife or knives are you carrying today???
Would you carry a knife to a funeral?
Perfect Landscapers Knife

I wonder if there is some sort of sign here? :p

My stupidist: I was 16yo. My Mom said I couldn't leave to pick up my girlfriend until I finished unloading the dishwasher. In the frenzy I threw a plastic baby bottle into the cabinet and bounced back out. I went to catch it as it fell towards the open dishwasher and totally impaled my arm on a chefs knife that was loaded point up in the silverware rack. Couldn't even pull it out of my arm. We wrapped a towel around it and my arm and off to the ER. I was late to pick up the girlfriend after all.

My worst: I was showing a friend my new offshore fillet knife. I had the knife in my right hand and the plastic sheath in my left hand. When I was done showing him the blade I jammed it into the sheath, but missed the opening and ran the blade down the outside of the sheath and through my fingers. Almost cut two completely off and trashed the third. That was an expensive day in 1998 and I still don't have feeling in the end of one of them.

To someone else: We were castrating pigs one day (insert joke here). My brother was holding them by their back legs and I was cutting. On the largest pig I was just starting my cut when it kicked hard...Case Stockman Spey blade on a ceramic stick does a hell of a job across the back of your brothers hand.

Had my blur close on my hand due to a brief bout of going full-retard. It's the only time I've needed stitches from an accidental cut thus far.

When I was in grade school my friend's dad missed the scabbard with a samurai sword and it went completely through his leg. I wasn't there but I've seen the scars. It won't surprise you that the floor was covered in blood.

It wasn't his sword, it was at some other guy's house (not sure if that makes it worse or better).

My worse cut was with an American Indian flint knife. I had found it in my backyard and was playing with it and it cut my left index finger almost to the bone. I was about 9 yr old at the time. I've had numerous other cuts, but nothing as deep as that one.

My worst cut was actually made with a downhill ski. I was applying wax in the base of the ski, I was outside in a downhill piste and the tempareture was below freezing point. I guess that made the wax very hard and therefore I had to use a lot of force to make anything stick to the ski. And there you go, my hand slipped and the steel edge of the ski sliced of a chunk of my pinky finger. No permanent damage but it took some time to heal.

With knives I have seen two bad cuts. First was my brother, who slipped his hand while carving a piece of wood, resulting a good piece of meat and half of a nail missing from his thumb.

The second and worst accident happened when I was serving in the military. It was a rainy day and everything was wet, including the handle of a knife of one member of the group. After finishing whatever he was doing he hit the knife to stand on a log. His hand slipped on the wet handle and because his knife didn't have a guard, his hand slide to the blade, cutting tendons of all four fingers.

Cut my thumb pad from the joint to the tip down to the bone with a electric slicer in the restaurant about 20 years ago. It was hanging by a little piece of tendon or somthin. The DR had to sew it up loosely so it would drain. It took forever to heal back up. I kept a splint and a watertight bandage on it at work for about a month. I still dont have much feeling in my thumb pad. On the bright side, I dont remember it hurting that much. It was about as a super-clean cut as you can get I guess. Scott

Just like a typical Izula bite. Got this one finishing the final knot on my BK14 - having foolishly failed to tape the blade or at least hold the sheath properly.

Finally get to show this off :). So two years ago this fathers day me and a friend, my cousin, and my brother go swimming down at this deep hole in a small river a few miles from my house. I had cut myself once in the river before slicing my big toe pretty bad. Any way. We saw this snake chilling on some branches by this small waterfall near the swimming hole. My cousin doesn't like snakes and I dont like them where I am swimming. So I hop up on the bank grab a stick my cousing grabs a stick and wades in the river towards the snake. The moved and I figured he was going for the water. I hop off the bank and my feet sink in the muk. My foot go this sensation that I had landed on the edge of something really cold. I sit on the bank and pull my feet out and there is this

. At first it didnt hurt I pulled it apart and was like I cant afford stitches I was 17 and dumb what can I say. My pals are like yah you do. I go home then to the hospital. 4 hours later and 3 internal stitches and 6 external I was all good. Couldn't walk for five days some of the worst pain I have ever had and I still have a numb lump on the bottom of my foot. Hobbled around for the next week or more. Pop the cut open a few times it was a mess.
