Worst Accidental Cut?

I was cutting some zip ties with my XM-18 and one popped allowing the blade to hit my left thumb, cleanly slicing it from the bottom of the first joint all the way around to the top of the knuckle, bone deep, follwing the bone all the way around- severing one of the major veins and a nerve or two in the process.

Luckily it didn't sever any tendons, and after 6 stitches and $2K lighter in the pocket book it has just left me with a sensative/numb area on the side of my left thumb thats a bit tight from time to time.

Anyone who says an Hinderer XM-18 isn't a slicer, I will have to disagree agree and call you and unexperienced liar:D

Wow Joshua... that guy's story is crazy. That is definitely on the top of the "Places I never hope to cut" list.

My cut was more stupid than it was sever, for which I am lucky.

I had just gotten done reprofiling my Izula and I sat down on the couch fiddling with it while it was in its sheath on my wasit. I carry it horizontal, so I was screwing around with it like people mess with their belt buckles...

Anyway, I was running my finger along the contour of the handle, up into the opening of the sheath a little bit. I don't know for what reason it occured to me to try it, but I thought, "I wonder if I can leave my finger here, pull the blade out and have my finger catch the finger guard."

Before my brain went, "Stop bad idea!" my right hand pulled the sheath and bam, the blade slid out right across my index finger as it stood at the opening of the sheath waiting for the finger guard.

It was a pretty deep cut right on the tip of the finger, but luckily a little bit of glue fixed it up and I didn't have to get stitches or anything like that. I have some pictures around, but they're really underwhelming.

By far the stupidest way I've ever cut myself.

Rushing to get done, right before i had to go to work. Was just finishing up a razors edge from tip to handle on my new OKC Kukri. Just finished with the ceramic stone, was wiping the oil off the blade with a paper towel (folded in half 2x---4 layers) , & turned my head to look at the clock. I stood up & started putting things away, when i noticed my right hand was VERY sticky. I sliced the tips of 3 fingers. 2 not so bad, but one was probably deep enough to need stitches. I had no time, had to go to work. Took a handfull of bandaids with me, some med tape, medical gloves & some paper towels & the anti-bact ointment with me & just changed it 4 x during the night. Took 3 days to stay closed as i kept ripping it open during work. Nothing even close to some of the other wounds i have seen. It is just the first time in 47 years that i did that. I was amazed that i did not feel it at all. Gues my sharpening skills are getting better, LOL :D

I got this one last year while woodcarving with a golok:

Given the size and sharpness of that blade, I'd say I was VERY lucky.

Mind you, I've gotten worse, non-accidental ones during my scarification phase. :D

I was showing off the security of a kydex sheath to my buddy. I didn't have the knife pushed in the whole way and when I shook it with a violent downward thrust, It came out with equal force. The bad news is that I was standing directly over a trunk that held my knives and gear. The knife hit the top of the trunk on it's pommel and my hand followed it. The 4 1/2" blade burried itself into the palm of my hand. It came close to hitting the medial nerve. It bled real, real bad. I was in between jobs and didn't have insurance. I kept the wound as clean as I could but, had to wrap it tightly with gauze to keep it from bleeding with alacrity. After a few days, I tried the liquid bandage/topical super glue that is intended for small cuts. I estimate that it would have taken at least 12 stitches and a few hog nose staples to close it up.
It took awhile to heal and the scar it left looks a lot like carpal tunnel surgery. The knife involved was an Entrek Javalina. It is a very good knife with a very secure kydex sheath. I always remember to seat a knife fully and make sure it is secured before I perform any more stupid human tricks.

thats the worst one that was my fault. I was carving a piece of wood and the wood ended up going through my hand

I've been stabbed twice

One time I was in a jon boat crabbing with a friend and when he went to cut the line with his dull knife he stabbed me in the thigh so deep the blade stuck. :grumpy:

The other one was a fried tried to flick a knife, it slipped out of his hand and stabbed me in my bicep

Instead of taping the blade, I paracord wrapped the handle of a HEST and it popped out of the kydex sheath, slicing my thumb. Luckily I didnt hit a tendon, but that bish was deeep. 11 stiches later, i was back in business.....

Am I the only one getting quiesy (qweesy) looking at this thread?

I don't believe in the idea that a dull knife is more dangerous then a sharp one, the ONLY times I have cut myself bad has been opening or closing folding blades. I have never cut myself bad enough to require medical attention, but I don't keep my knives razor sharp either.

Ah yes but which one hurts more? :P

I've cut myself badly only 3 times, those threehut a whole lot les than the many light cuts with dull and chipped knives.

When I chopped off the corner of my thumb it didn't hurt a bit, knife was hair popping. I'm sharpening a neighbors knife, get a little over zealous trying to get out chips, give myself a small knick.

That knick hurt, you can feel every slight deveation in the blade.

A Cold Steel Scimitar did a number on me. I arrived home from work and found the CS that I ordered had arrived. Following my usual routine, I kicked off my shoes and socks, settled into my recliner to watch the news; but this day I also held the Scimitar and began examining it. The opening was very slick and the edge was radically sharp.

I was content, I was drowsy, I slept. The open knife slipped out of my hand and resided in my lap. About an hour later I woke up, decided to get ready for bed and, unaware of the knife in my lap I stood up. Suddenly there was a tremendous, and I mean tremendous, pain in my right foot. The blade fell straight down. The point hit first on the inside of my foot. Evidently it hit a nerve. But the rest of that curvaceous blade followed opening up the side of my foot like.....an axe slicing cheese...a tomato being disassembled by Tishiro Mifune In The Seven Samurai.

I had to keep compression on the wound for two hours. While still oozing blood, it clotted sufficently for me to get to an emegrency room. My shoe was overflowing with blood which impressed the fellow at the admissions desk. I had thought of calling 911, but I didn't want to upset my German Shepherd. He was already traumatized by all the blood.

I forget how many, very many, stitches I received. But following this I've have had the greatest respect for AUS 8 and what it accomplished under just the force of gravity.
Of course the incident could have been considerably worse. After all the knife was on my lap!

Haha... haven't shown these pics in a while.

Well a little over a year and a half ago I was in my kitchen playing around with this.....

Fallkniven Thor (the big one), I had JUST finished sharpening it. I was standing up messing with it when I slipped and cut a chunk off the tip of my finger.... Ouch! The knife slipped out of my hands and fell from about waist hight.

I heard the knife hit the floor and felt slight sensation in my ankle, but didn't think much of it until I tried to take a step....... felt like the floor was caving in under my foot, I thought WTF?!! I grabbed ahold of the counter, and looked down at my ankle to see this.....

YIKES! Somehow the knife had landed on the back of my ankle and sliced right through my achilles tendon!!!

Sat down and wrapped it up with a dish towle, sinched it up with a belt, then had my wife grab some old crutches and drive my to the ER. (she was 8 months pregnant at the time, and NOT happy with the idea of taking care of a baby AND a cripple, LOL!)

Here's a pic of it a month or so after it happened...

Took a long time to heal, but it's back up to about 95% now. Still gets a little stiff and I lost about an inch off my vertical leap, but other than that it's all good. And I have a cool scar to show off now. :)

My worst one involved an axe, firewood, a high school camping trip...and beer. Moral of the story: don't hold a limb with one hand while you try to split it with an axe, especially if you've been drinking.

Fortunately I didnt take a very hard swing so I still have my thumb, but there was a LOT of bleeding from the big flap of skin I filleted off the side of it. Memories like this one are the reason I don't drink anymore.

This thread is making me a little sick , I'd have to say my worst cut came from my cheapo gerber/fiskars axe anyhow one day I was in the woods behind my house and came across a very unsightly tree so I figured it would make good practice so I felled it and thought it would be cool to turn it in to firewood so once it was on the ground I began chopping it into smaller pieces it was getting near dark so I was trying to hurry and pelting the tree with the hardest blows I possibly could to make a long story short I missed the tree completly and hit myself square in the shin I had that cheap axe so sharp I didn't even feel it for a few seconds then felt somthing running down my leg ( I was wearing shorts by the way) I looked down to see one of the worst cuts I've ever seen the cut wasn't very wide but had cut clean to the bone it was a very stitch worthy cut but the ER is about a 20 minute drive from my house so I just sucked it up it took. It several weeks for the cut to close up so in hind sight I would have been way better off to just go get stitches.

I sliced my finger open cause i absolutely had to pull some branches while i was holding my TAK in my other hand. I pulled hard, something snapped and my arms went flying against each other. That ended in a pretty deep cut to my middle-finger. I tried to tape it shut and put plaster on it, but it just kepr on bleeding through it all for ages.

About 4 days ago i was using my LM wave to cut open a tube. I placed the wave at one of those cloth-shelves in my locker, with the tip out. I remember thinking that as long as i dont touch the shelf, nothing will happen. Well, what happened next? Yeah, you guessed it, i banged into the damn thing and the Wave was knocked down tip-first into the palm of my hand. It fell about 50 cm before it hit my hand. Anyone seen the Wave blade? That thing is pointy!

Anyways it made a minor but DEEP little punture wound. Again, that cut bled like you wouldnt believe. 3 days after it was still weeping and the major swelling was starting to worry me.

I seem to excel in small but deep cuts :o Luckily i havent had any axe/severe accidents.
