Would/do you guys ever carry and use a sought after knife that is no longer made?

I tend to fade in and out of the knife hobby every so often, and now I just picked up two different length Buck Strider 880/881 spear point folders. I owned each of them while they were being produced, loved them, but just assumed they'd always be available.

Should I carry and use them? (I'm leaning toward yes, since they are built like tanks, and I'm not terribly hard on knives!)

Hey Eric! I have a couple I won't use, but those were gifts from my sons.....super thoughtful little shits that they are!!
I use all the others, discoed or not. Just scored a beautiful Benchmade 705 that is no longer made AND a sprint......carried and used since I got it! The joy for me is carrying, using and maybe showing them off a little bit.
The couple my boys got me, 710-1401 with their initials engraved and a sprint run PM2 are 'dress up' knives!
Depends what they mean to you bro!

Yes, most of my knives. I've been using them for years, even picked up replacements when they come up as I like some so much and would miss not having one.
Here is an example, one in use, one for spare; pretty collectable now:

My son now gets the "spares"; but they are all for using.

Some people just like collecting, nothing wrong in that either. In knife collecting then the premium is generally reflected in the quality. MIB can be important for recent factory, but not always the case. Very few knives make a really big premium and then they really need to be early something from a maker that is later very much in fashion. For most they might just stay in line with inflation. Some makers are chasing the collectors market which eventually distracts from overall value of collecting. Its got to the stage where buying for an investment todays stock is more likely to be a loss maker. Better to buy into high profile older work. Sadly, there are a lot of knives made that are likely to be never worth much ever.

Anyhow, to me the real value is in using them.

Of course. Knives are for using. If you rather put'em in a safe and look at'em once a month....that's OK too!

Do you ever plan on selling? If keeping until you die why not use them. I've used knives from the 20s broken collectible knives from the 40s that people really want.

I edc a vintage knife, that was very desirable to me.
But it's not valuable, and not really sought after by anyone ( they're basically a dime a dozen )

I just don't think I could bring myself to do that.

There are only 2 knives i've ever WANTED... a Gerber LHR or a Zombie Tools The Tooth, the LHR i would never carry because i know that being a combat knife it's not really ment to take a everyday beating, but The Tooth is made by ZT so i know it could take a beating, so i guess i would carry it after i took off the guard of course.

Absolutely.
I won't buy something I can't/won't use, I can't afford that.
I just wish I had some of the pieces I sold off over the years.

I have a Spyderco Caly 3.5 that I carry a few days per week and I think it will be reintroduced again. I have a Benchmade 705 that was my wedding gift from the wife and it is retired.

I don't understand buying a knife and being afraid or just choosing not to use it.
If your afraid of using a $300 knife, then spend $25 and get a Rat 1 and use it :)
