Would/do you guys ever carry and use a sought after knife that is no longer made?

Coins are meant to be spent, stamps are meant to go through the mail, who are you to judge whether or not a knife should be used? Different strokes for different folks.

That said, I carry are discontinued/hard to find/one off knife almost every day.

WoW....
I have knives for collection, and from time to time I will carry them, what I would describe as, a safe environment, (IE) environment where I can show it off, kind of like jewelry, and no ruff service would be implemented.....
I'm at a slight disadvantage for the moment, I need to learn how to post pics as a new member......

I have a pile of knives. Some collectable, some not so much. If you use and not abuse the knife, it will still hold its value well so I feel no guilt carrying and using my knives. But it is also unlikely I will ever sell any of them. In the unlikely event I do sell one, or a few, they will be in good shape and command a fair price. All in all, they are yours, do as you please.

I EDC a BHK UnderGround Spur. There were only about 32 made.

That is pretty much my perspective. Who cares really? Back when I first joined BF, I was on a SOG buying kick. I liked their knives and I wanted some of the older models that were not AUS 8 or whatever. I was also fairly active on fleabay then and have since pretty much curtailed my interest there. So, would I use one of those discontinued knives? Probably. They are just knives and I have no intention to sell anything. I'll probably die with rubber maid tubs full of knives. Use them or not, not a big thing.
Whatever the case, I fervently hope you end up with several tubs full. What a way to go. [emoji106]

I am of mixed feelings in this regard.

My Rajah I is a true safe queen, that will never see use I guess, that's why I have the similar Rajah II models for.

They are hard working blades, and can be used and abused.

It's just so beautiful and no longer made.

But, others such as the Spyderhawk are out of production and I still use them as work knives in the garden.

Because they do it so well, and perform so nicely as gardening blades, that I'd feel disrespectful by not putting them to use.

I use them, mod them, and they lose their value that way, but for me their value its in their performance and utility, whereas the value in the Rajah I is mainly because of its looks.

To each its own, that's just my $0.02

Welcome back, Eric H.

I have several knives that were just basic production knives, when I bought them, so used them without worrying. Yes, if they had been kept NIB, I'd have a sizable investment, but that's not why I accumulate knives. I had one "investor-grade" knife that sat in it's box, and I was afraid to even take it out to look at. Sold it and bought 3 users.

I have purchased a few used limited knives, that had already gotten the first dings and scratches. Bought at a significant discount to the NIB "collector" prices, but I bought them to use, so saved a bundle, and got awesome users in the bargain. :D examples: ZT 0600 ($300), BM 730CFHS ($100), Microtech LCC D/A ($200), Kershaw Leek TI-ZDP ($120), Kershaw Offset Splash ($100), Benchmade 760BK LFTi ($125).

I say use them, and enjoy them. If you have no intention of selling them, or don't care about making a profit, you may as well get joy out of carrying them around, and showing them off, while using them as the makers intended. Kid's won't know their value, and will probably sell them off for pennies on the dollar. :p

I have a Spyderco Manix 2 spring, CTS-XHP w/ Foliage Green scales. Very hard to find. Its one of my most carried knives. I love the steel, but didn't care for the G-10 scales, especially the color. They've been replaced with desert ironwood ones by sketchen.

To me the value of the knife is in it's use. I buy them to use them regardless of $ cost, value or discontinued or not. There are a couple that I reserve for special occasions , such as my patriotic themed knives, but every knife sees some use. I am aware of what is in my pocket, and will not be using a rare knife as a screw driver or something equally damaging that isn't it's purpose.
That is just how I enjoy knives, others can enjoy them any way they choose. If they prefer to fondle and keep them in a safe, so be it. Some have so many they would have to work out an hourly schedule to get them all in use.

Think of it this way. You have a knifemaker membership. Every knife you make is one of a kind and can never be reproduced ;) I say use them.

I would use a knife if it was discontinued. I don't own any like that at the moment, but I do buy knives (fixed blades) that I haven't used yet, only because I haven't had the need. I still like how they look so I buy them anyway. Its like candy, I buy them cause I like them.

Hmm.. I use the Spyderco large Lum Chinese folder that I think is now discontinued (as Lum had passed). Although, it's the pink one which apparently still has quite a stock, making it extremely affordable to pick up.

Works for me.

YES. Regular sebbie , lil temp or ti ATR, Salsa , CRKT apache , prowler and s2 . Bench made AFCK and so on.

Would that be a CRKT Prowler? One of my all time favorites. Years after they were discontinued, I found one NIB at a local army surplus store. I now own that one as a back up just in case I loose one. I have no plans to ever use the second one but I still search for them. Not a costly knife at all but still fun to use and carry.

I am also on the look out for a few other discontinued models. Early model Kershaw Zing's, Victorinox and Wenger pattern 61 Soldiers, DAK and SADF Pioneers. Some to carry, some to collect.

I guess that I could go both ways on your question. So, my answer is no and yes. It just depends upon the knife.

Looking back, all the knives I've had that were collectible or discontinued I ended up selling because I never used them. Having realized that, I have made it a point to use everything I own now, and to be honest, I am much more satisfied with where I am as a knife enthusiast.

I don't buy sought after ones really but I will someday buy another benchmade 910. Here's my thinking. I'll use cars as example though. Say i somehow had the money and bought a 53 corvette. Now I'd be buying it to drive it. So if somehow the cheapest one I found I bough, turns out to be number one. Collectibility doesn't mean anything to me. But means a lot to others. So I would sell it to a collector and buy another one less sought after. Just like if I'm buying a specific fixed blade or folder and it happens to be sought after I'll use it. But if I'm just buying because price was right and it's sought after I may sell it unless it's perfect to me.

Hi. All my knives have been sought after (save some bucks here and there monthly, search for them hard, try to get my own “right” price, etc.) :). Currently I think I only own two which are discontinued (but one never knows if someday, somewhere, they will be resurrected :D). I use my tools for good, but never abuse them. They all see their good share of pocket/rucksack time and they seem to like it :D. Me too ;) ! I try to maintain them all properly and they generally last for years (not only knives). As said somewhere before, using my blades it’s the part of this hobby I like most. Here they are, busy in some outdoor activities :):
