Would it be dishonest?

Again I ask, put me on ignore. I'll find a way to let you know when the OP sues me for slander.

Well, I suppose technically it's libel. A knowingly false written statement to damage someone's reputation. So are you knowingly making false statements or just ignorantly doing so? You're factually incorrect, either way.

If you'd like to put me on ignore, go ahead. But as long as you continue to argue with me and blatantly lie, I will respond, because liars like you need to be exposed.

If rei will take the knife back no matter what then there is no reason to lie. Crappy thing to do for sure.

I see your point calc.

Agreed - like I said, I don't agree with OP. They're not exactly acting in a straightforward manner here. I just have an issue with people acting like it's the end of the world. A lot of sanctimonious grandstanding ITT.

There's been a little bit of overreaction ITT, I think.

Yes, returning something after a year isn't exactly on the up and up. And people like OP are the reason why REI has recently had to scale back their return policy to a year instead of lifetime IIRC. But, it's REI - the reason you buy at REI is because of the return policy. They charge far, far more money than is reasonable for the majority of the items they carry, but their staff is knowledgeable, their products are of great quality, and their return policy is the best in the business. Regarding what REI will do with the item once it's returned, they have garage sales several times a year where people literally line up down the block to buy returned gear at a discounted price.

So I don't really agree with what OP's doing, no. But REI deals with much worse very often, and they've built it into their business model. So chastise OP if you must, but before you feel bad for poor REI, just remember the price tag of the last thing you bought there. They know what they're doing and this is nothing new.

I don't shop at REI. I've been in one once and that was enough for me, but I still don't like the idea of people doing this.

It reminds me of certain knife companies, who go way above and beyond what anyone could reasonably expect to make a customer happy, and there are people that take advantage of it just because they can.

I don't like it either. I do shop there, and OP doing this has a tangible, negative effect on me because of it.

All I'm saying is that all this talk about REI not accounting for this or OP being a thief is ridiculous.

I see, you can call me a liar but I can't call the original poster one even though he has demonstrably lied in this thread.

You're obviously not a lawyer, quit pretending to be.

I don't need to be a lawyer to tell you that that's not the definition of theft, and you're lying if you claim otherwise (which you do). This isn't up for debate, you're factually and objectively a liar.

You're nothing but a troll.

This is honestly getting ridiculous now...op is gone, there's nothing further to discuss on the matter...census says it's wrong and anyone with half a conscience would see it's wrong...but why start bickering amongst ourselves on behalf of the d bag that started it all?

Exactly right.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. You can disagree with OP all you want, but calling them a thief when they're doing nothing wrong per the rules of the return policy is just plain stupidity.

Ok then why the fuck is he (the OP) asking us what he should do. He knows he has a year to return it and had every intention to return it. Just return it and don't start this dumb drama shit.

If it is defective, return it. After a year and you just don't like it? That's not a reason to return it in my opinion. Suck it up and figure out before you buy something whether you'll like it or not. You are old enough to buy a knife, you're old enough to have some idea what you like or not. If it felt cheap in the store how did you ever think it was going o feel better later? This is one of those "growing up" things the adults talk about.

If you have to ask the question, you should already know the answer. That's called "Moral Compass".

Now that the children are chasing each other around the room
(you are! no, you are!) it is time we put this to bed.

Happy Standard Time, everyone :)
