Would you use your own classy gents folder at a fancy restaurant?

I’d use my own knife to cut a steak on a china plate if my specific intent was to dull my knife. That scenario hasn’t occurred yet.

So, you guys complaining about cutting on a plate realize that you don't have to put your full bodyweight behind every cut, right? That being said, I usually cut off a strip then cut that into bites sitting on top of the rest of the steak. That's also why I specifically use serrated knives, only the very tips get dulled on the plate;)

It's my pleasure to use my finest knives to cut my steak in any restaurant when the cutlery provided is junk (almost always...)
It's not to show off, pish & posh, but to have a nice'n clean cutting and eating experience.

Not traditional, but dang classy IMO :

Used it for lunch today : crispy grilled squid and a gorgeous white wine. Very enjoyable.
And nobody batted an eye. As far as I was aware, that is.

Nice knife (I was on the fence for this one for a while) and definitely knice chopsticks, too. Wow, that's some class. I feel peasantly right now !:D

I almost never carry a "fancy gents folder" that would be appropriate to use at a nice restaurant.

But I m not a fancy gent and I rarely go to nice restaurants.o_O

Use my own knife in a restaurant? Only all of the time. If the knife they provide doesn't (or can't) cut the mustard, I have no problem using one that can. Folder or fixed, I am not particular, whatever I am carrying that's going to do the best job. Besides, SOMEBODY has to scare the straights.......

Many years ago, a cop at a pizza place told me I had to remove my knife from my belt. I asked why, and he told me it was illegal. I explained that it was a single edged blade, less than 6" in length, and was not concealed, I could carry it anywhere I wanted. He asked how I knew that, and I told him that I called downtown and CHECKED THE LAW, and that perhaps he should, too. THEN he said that I should still take it off, as it made people nervous. I said that was their problem, and that maybe THEY should stay home. With that, I took my salad back to my table and finished my dinner in peace.

Unless, and UNTIL, I do something stupid, it's nobody else's business what I carry, why I carry it, or what I do with it.

If I had a Mnandi, say with box elder burl inlays, I would probably cut the steak if I had to. But I don’t have a Mnandi and I don’t go to nice steak restaurants very often...

Oh, I agree! Had the cop said nothing, I would have finished my dinner, and been on my way without incident. He'd have not been embarrassed in front of his partner. It wasn't about my 'rights' but about people who don't know how to mind their own damn business.

And I am more dodecahedron. Which side you see is determined by which side hit the floor in the morning, and where you're looking at me from....

I like to bring my executioner's axe to high end food joints. Always makes a big impression and service tends to be top notch once the formalities are out of the way.
All joking aside, the only way I am using one of my own knives is if they serve on wood cutting boards. Which might be a fun idea for a posh eatery catering to knife nuts. Food served on wood and customers are required to supply their own knife.
I doubt supplying your own knife would work as a general rule in a restaurant. Maybe they could have a "knife knut room". I noticed on the news that a fella used a double edged axe that is primarily used for medieval recreations for home defense. The article said there was a lot of blood. No charges brought against him as far as I know.

On the restaurant thing, I use what they provide but I always have my edc in my pocket should it be needed. I have no qualms about cutting on a ceramic or metal plate. Just re-sharpen as needed.

There's no such thing as common sense. If there was, more people would have it...

And if you're talking to me, maybe you should re-think the 'Knuckle dragging and mean-minded Neanderthal' thing. You're clearly out of your league here....

I've got a Laguiole (nothing as rare and expensive as the Spyderco Ramco pictured above) that I could use at a restaurant, but I've never remembered to take it w/me when I've gone out for dinner.

However, I almost always carry a folder of some kind (seldom a "gentleman's version) and have used it to cut meat when the knife I was provided was not up to the job.

Update: Actually just used my Ikuchi instead of a plastic knife to cut up some BBQ chicken at lunch. Took this photo of if but it cut off the end of the blade.

Just proves that I'm a lousy photographer but you get the "point." ;)

I didn't talk especially to you. However, you can rethink what you ever think is worth reworking. I do it all the time. But I believe in common sense... I believe in what works.

In France it’s very common to use your own knife. It’s bit of a sin to use the serrated knives from the restaurant, they tear up the meat, so a Frenchman uses his own sharp, non serrated knife.
Bon appetit.

Go to an Outback in Fairbanks AK, pull out a Bowie knife, and nobody will look at you twice. Try the same thing at an Outback in New Jersey and the reactions may be different.
