Would you use your own classy gents folder at a fancy restaurant?

To each their own, but no matter how ‘gentlemanly’ you think the knife is, pulling it out at a nice restaurant, at least to me, seems a tad pretentious. I’ve never been to a nicer restaurant and not been provided an adequate knife, nor a piece of meat so tough it required something sharper than provided.

Now, I’ve used my pocket knife at roadside BBQ joints that only supply a cheap plastic spork-like utensil. Quite appropriate to use your own there. Same at a cookout, or while camping. It might be the only thing on hand sharp enough to actually cut.

Just my opinion. Life I said, to each their own.

I use my kershaw leek quite a bit at restaurants, esp. if having steak. I only prefer serrations when having to cut heavy rope. 98% of restaurant supplied steak knives seem dull & serrated. I have never found the edge blunt from ceramic plates, it's really just a little bit of patience and slowing down when you're almost thru the cut.

It's so small, there has never been any fuss or notice... however I am careful not to let the assisted opening make a full thwak sound.

Most if not all restaurant supplied steak knives are serviceable

BUT

I really enjoy using fine cutlery for everything

for me I like using my own very sharp steak knife and I eat at some pretty good steak houses

no one has ever even noticed what I’m doing ..... I don’t draw my knife and stand up and announce I’m using my own knife and I could care less what anyone thinks

I carry my to chopsticks in my briefcase with a folding Shun steak knife so it’s usually in my car chop Sticks’s in custom shark skin case knife in a ray skin pouch. The shark case built by master craftsman Paul Long

if I come home and decide to go out it’s not a problem to grab either or depending where I go

don’t get me wrong if I forget no big deal ...... but given the choice I’ll take my own

but I’m odd ..... I als use wax seals on important letters etc :)

No fountain pen?

I also use the Shun Personal/gentleman's steak knife. Not trying to impress anyone, just tired of dealing with dull serrated blades from places like Del Frisco's and Ruth's Chris.

Speaking of, I recently bought my wife a pair of Kizer titanium chopsticks. It's not to make a statement, she just likes nice things. They work really well. Me, my hands have never figured out how to use them.

The red neck in me wants to tell you “The only thing I use chopsticks for is gutting bluegills!”

The reality is: My Dad made sure I could use them to eat with! It is fun now and then. It definitely makes you slow down and enjoy your meal.

If you REALLY want to show off, bring a Wicked Edge with you and sharpen your blade while you're waiting for your food. You'll look twice as cool as if you'd just brought your knife.

Exactly ! However, with them fried noodles you can shovel in a bunch with chopsticks... And it tastes great. I favor chopsticks for noodles, even for period correct Italian pasta. Don't shoot, don't shoot !

Yes,just the other day.I had my ZT0630 at a restaurant, their grilled chicken was really grilled and the knife supplied was not cutting it.

Like many others here I would use my own knife if the cutlery provided is not of sufficient quality. I live in France, it is perfectly normal here to use your own Laguiole to cut your steak or whatever food with in a restaurant - from the small village bistro to the most high-end Michelin-starred place. However, I'd never do it to show off. And note: it shojuld be a Laguiole, maybe an Opinel in the village bistro amongst the farmers or truck drivers, but in any other restaurant, the only socially acceptable knife to bring along is a Laguiole or something very similar. Never a Spyderco-ish tactical monstrosity.

I like chopsticks for noodles. But my wife says I "slurp" when I eat them that way. I don t know how to correct for that unless I tilt my head toward the ceiling and drop the noodles into my open mouth. But then I risk getting sauce all over my face. Now I just use a fork to keep everyone happy.

i have and will continue to use my EDC for food if needed.

its not for show. i prefer it to be discreet. only once has it ever been noticed and that is b/c the server was a knife guy and saw the CF peeking out from under the rim of the plate.
Once, my wife even borrowed my knife to cut her duck breast - after mashing the first 1/3 of it into some sort of paste

I carry my to chopsticks in my briefcase with a folding Shun steak knife . . .

Interesting.

I've thought about buying one of those Shun steak knives for awhile. I actually have a pair of silver chopsticks (they were a wedding gift but never use them).

You could go totally "John Wick" with those 2 piece metal chopsticks. Where's you buy them?

I'm jealous. LOL! ;)

I could care less about the pish or the posh. I just prefer to cut with my own knives and even though the wife and I eat steak out often enough, more times than not, no matter the quality of the restaurant, the steak knives leave a lot to be desired.
I take this one with me every where I go when it's out to dinner or lunch.
Bradford "Gatsby" steak knife in M390.
Never worried about cutting on the plate. I cut most of the steak on top of itself by cutting larger portions off, laying them on the steak on the plate and then cutting them to eat. Only the last few pieces get cut on the plate, and I don't mind touching up the edge later. Sharpening is part of owning knives and using them. Gatsby.jpg

The only “fancy” place I have used my own knife was at a black tie fundraiser. The “steak” was so tough I could not cut it with the caterer ‘s knife. I broke out my buck 55 to cut the steak and let my wife use it also. Definitely not for show. Another couple at out table used her Sak.

The only culinary use my pocket knives have seen were trimming drinking straws down for my daughter when she was little.

I wouldn't use one of my good folders at a restaurant for a couple of reasons:

I don't want to bugger them up on a plate.

If I am eating a cheap piece if Texas Roadhouse shoe leather, then the oversized pruning saw they provide is good enough.

If I am eating at a nicer steakhouse, then I hope the beef had been aged well enough to not need much to get it to come apart easily.
