Wow, haven't looked at knives for a couple years. Prices seem insanely high now.

In 2015 dollars a Hyundai new, costs more than my house new. Hope my kids reap the benefits of my knife collection holding some value.

Yes but, on the opposite side of the coin, one of the things I've been thinking, is the price of a bog standard Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. They have been $23-24k forever! I guess it's all about volume, because if you look at the prices of the flashy Audi's (leaving aside the scumbag tampering VW has done) they have gone up in price at the same rate as knives, crack cocaine, and batteries. So there again, it's all about flash. Knife makers, production and custom, are doing a good job of keeping desirability very strong.

Wrong. I'm laughing at the fact that people are complaining that they want something they can't afford. It's like a toddler whining when he doesn't get his way. Everything costs more than it used to, get over it. Except gas, that's a mess right now.

The majority of the people here already own a knife, and they are the people complaining that another knife they want, costs too much...

Dave, I think your arrow fell short of the target. I can afford any knife out there. I'm just not willing to exchange my cash for said knife at their asking price. I'd rather have the cash thank you.

I don't recall saying you couldn't afford any knife.

Keep your cash. If you don't want to pay for the knife at their asking price, then you don't want the knife. If you want something, you will pay for it.

Afford any knife? I doubt that... There's a whole bunch of knives that fetch $10,000-$100,000 out there...

Bill Gates may see a knife price differently than I do.

Heck, even the doc down the street sees a knife price differently than I do. I may scarp away to earn $600 to buy a knife that a millionaire wouldn't buy even if he wanted it because he is frugal. At the same time, just because I can afford a knife and even want a knife, doesn't mean I am going to buy the knife.

When it comes to perspective and personal values we are all going to have a different opinion. That is why this thread is on page 11 even though the topic will never be resolved.

Just looked at a simple inflation calculator.

In 1915 $100 would have the same buying power as $2355 in 2015

In 2000 $100 would have the same buying power as $138 in 2015

Aah the wonders of economics. Remember, the maker has to factor in inflation regarding raw stock purchasing, travel, electricity etc and if it is a hand made product also work in the man hours on a knife.

(granted I am not revering to hype here, hype is a whole different ball game)

And why these threads never end well. ;)

Is something upsetting you? I may have been whiny in my first post, but it's purely comical now.

Am I rich enough? Yes. I make enough money to live within my means and be comfortable. If something is out of my means, I don't buy it. I'd love to own knives by DDR & MSC (to name a few) even though they are out of my means, but I don't complain that they are overpriced, because they use material that a $200 knife uses.

I don't recall that I've inquired about how many knives you own or if you're willing to pay for certain knives. The personal attacks are unneeded.

Complaining about personal attacks when you are the one doing the primary attacking?

I own and have owned knives many times more expensive than a Grip or Manix. My intent was to say that you don't always "get what you pay for" anymore.

Let's petition for a merge with Tacti-LOL and high end Chinese knives. That should keep everything on track.

Who am I attacking?

You absolutely get what you pay for. Until you understand that, I can't help you.

I'm just glad I could finally buy Hinderers for retail, recently. There's a lot more nice knives available this year for what I consider decent prices.

For sure.

That's another phenomenon people forget about; buying something while it's the height of exclusive fashion.
I remember back in the 90's these black wool trench-coats were $200.
Then they fell out of fashion...they wouldn't get you laughed at for wearing them, but they wouldn't get you immediate entry into the "cool kids" club either.
So I got mine for $50, tax included.

So you have to think about supply and demand, inflation, fashion and perceived exclusivity all combined when thinking about pricing.

It all comes down in the end to whether or not you agree with the price tag...there's lot's of knives, boots, watches and electronics I don't own because I don't agree with the price tag.

Actually you don't which is why there are so many opinions on the cost subject, steels, handles, and so forth. But I do get your point "in general" and in general it is correct for me. Everything is relative.

Sure wish my salary had increased even half as much as knives have. Seems nuts to me. Maybe it's really time to start rollin my own.

So now that you're back in the thread what models/brands have increased to the described insanely high prices?
