Wow, haven't looked at knives for a couple years. Prices seem insanely high now.

I think he is referring to the AUS-8 models that were on clearance and the new XHP.

If that's the case, he needs to re-evaluate then. Those models wouldn't have been on clearance, thus wouldn't have been that cheap, if it wasn't for the models in the new steel. If the Recon 1 wasn't coming out in XHP, the old AUS-8 Recon 1's wouldn't have dropped to $40, they would have been $70-75 just like they were before the change in steels.

biggest problem with the buck 110 is that unless its carried in a pouch on your belt, its like a boat anchor in your pocket...

Yep. That retro "carry it on your belt like a man" factor limits the appeal of the pre-modern Buck 110.:D

Here is the Everyday Price for a Buck 110.

I curious Jill why everytime I post to this thread you combat me on everything I say? I replied to the original Thread about the price of knives and responded with the Buck 110 is a great price point at 28 and ever since you have done everything to call me out on it. Even a strength test against your Cold Steel. Makes no sense to me what your trying to do other than harass.

The Buck 110 is about 40 at Wal-Mart here, with tax. Take it however, you please. You don't want to read my posts, then ignore me. I have my opinions just as you do.

So we're good here?

Knife prices haven't skyrocketed at all? A $100 knife from 5 years ago is now $110.

What's happened is folks who wanted a $40 knife five years ago now aren't worried because it costs $45. They're upset because now The want a $400 to $4500 knife and that's a tough nut to make.

what part of the country. prices online match the stores

Look Makael, let's just drop it. It doesn't matter about the Buck 110. I even own one. We discuss knives here, sometimes we disagree. Enjoy your Bucks, I have a few of them myself. Although I prefer the fixed blades, if you like your folders and they suit your needs, that's all that matters.

Bottled water goes for from $1-$5 a bottle depending on where you're at so figure $2 on average and if you're like a friend of mine all he drinks is bottled water. He drinks easily 4 bottles a day so that's $8 a day, times 365.

That's nearly $3K, think of the knife he could get if he just didn't buy water. :)

I didn't know I was your friend... :) I bottle my own at Mariano's for $.39 per gallon, and I drink two gallons per day between work and home.

Anyway, I believe the biggest reason for increases is companies enforcing MAP and/or raising MSRP and thus MAP.

$100 for Griptilian in 154cm is too much. So is a Spyderco Tatanka in VG-10 at $200. Not to mention the $300ish Rubicon. Sure you get CF, Ti liners, but S30V? $300 for a mass produced knife. UGH.

$100 for 154cm? No Way!
$200 for S30V? Ridiculous!
$300 for VG10? Unbelievable!

Ohhh shut up... This is pitiful!

20 years ago, 440C was high quality. Times change. Prices change. You think the price of a Coke is too high? Stop drinking soda!

Milk costs more than it did 20 years ago. So, knife manufacturers should keep their prices low, because it's ridiculous to try and make a profit these days... Sheesh.

At any rate, I think that if we look at the distribution of knives at different price points we used to have something closer to normal distribution, but we're now seeing a bit of a skew to the right.

hahahaha THIS.

I'm not surprised (or angry) that certain knives are more expense now than ten years ago, because some of the newer stuff is better. What I find frustrating is that a few companies seem to hike their prices $10-$20 EACH year. Your standard 154CM Benchmade Griptilian was around $76 in 2013 and the Adamas was ~$130. Then MAP hit and BOOM! ~$100 for the grip and the Adamas is around $180. Leatherman's at it too, with the price of the Wave being roughly $90 now instead of $75.

So my question is: When will we stop buying knives long enough for the prices to go down a little. Supply and demand right? If Leatherman can't sell $100 Waves because the Chinese ones at the big box tool store go for $10, won't they have to lower their prices?

Honestly, I'd rather live with the price increases and still have the quality option rather than resigning to having to purchase only Chinese-made junk. If we really did a boycott, the American makers would probably go out of business because much of their costs probably don't have to do with steel and materials. (endless policy compliance/insurance costs/taxes/etc. are what "kill" American manufacturing)

There is a difference between increasing prices with inflation, and price gouging. 20 years ago I was perfectly fine with ATS-34 in my SOG Pentagon Elite (pre arc lock).

But when I get a G-10 Manix 2 with CPM-S30V for the same price as a Grip, it makes the Grip look vastly overpriced.

I don't know why your panties are in a bunch, but production companies are generally expected to keep up with the times. Spyderco generally does this, except for the few oddballs. Ti framelocks are were its at currently (much to my chagrin) which everyone is starting to embrace.

Ti framelocks..... good. That means I won't be buying any knives. ;) I hate metal handled folders. Unfortunately, there are still plenty of choices to tease away the money in my wallet.

It's comical to see people complaining. That manix suits you better than a Griptilian? Cool. Benchmade knows what they are doing, and people still buy Griptilians at the current prices. So curiously, is it that the Griptilian is overpriced, or is the Manix underpriced?

To me, who gives a flying flip? It's my money, or your money, so do what you want. Hell, I just bought two hooded sweat shirts this past week. One was a $7 Hanes zip up and the other was a $200 Arcteryx Covert Hoody. They both have a prupose, neither was under or overpriced. Get it?

So, what you're essentially complaining about is that you don't want to see other people expressing their opinions which are complaints about how expensive knives are. Got it.

Don't buy the expensive ones if you don't want to.
There's also more inexpensive knives out there than at any previous point in human history.
You can buy a knife that costs less than a burger.

Or, you can by a knife that costs more than a car.

It's up to you. :)
