Wow, haven't looked at knives for a couple years. Prices seem insanely high now.

Everytime a thread about value comes up there's someone saying the Buck 110, is a super strong knife. I've owned many knives all my life. Used them all kinds, and I'm sorry I just haven't seen where the Buck 110 is all that tough. In fact it's shown me to be quite the opposite, even if it is iconic. Could I be wrong? Of course I could be, that's why I'd gladly throw that CS up against it in a serious hard use test, if someone else would a 110. I'm not bothered either way it turns out.

I love the 110 and you are not wrong. I don't think it's all that amazing when it comes to handling lateral forces either. I still think it's well made and a great knife for 28 dollars. Don't fool your self into thinking it's something that it's not though. It's designed to be a hunting knife, use it for light to medium tasks and you'll be fine.

Nailed it.!

In 2015 dollars a Hyundai new, costs more than my house new. Hope my kids reap the benefits of my knife collection holding some value.

Prices are extreme steep these days, especially if I compare them to 5 years ago when my local currency was 50% stronger against the dollar. I am glad I could build a modest collection during those times. The ones I have will have to last a few decades.

So, what you're essentially complaining about is that you don't want to see other people expressing their opinions which are complaints about how expensive knives are. Got it.

Wrong. I'm laughing at the fact that people are complaining that they want something they can't afford. It's like a toddler whining when he doesn't get his way. Everything costs more than it used to, get over it. Except gas, that's a mess right now.

The majority of the people here already own a knife, and they are the people complaining that another knife they want, costs too much...

Not at all. You are whining about other people's opinions. You are whining about why other people have the opinions that they do. So what if they think a knife is too expensive for what it is?

Are you rich enough that there is nothing you can't afford but that you wish you could? If you really think about it, that's all some people are doing in this thread.

I have enough knives to last me my lifetime and I'm not buying any more because I'm not willing to pay the price. What the heck business is it of yours if I'm not willing to pay the price and I say so on this forum?

Is something upsetting you? I may have been whiny in my first post, but it's purely comical now.

Am I rich enough? Yes. I make enough money to live within my means and be comfortable. If something is out of my means, I don't buy it. I'd love to own knives by DDR & MSC (to name a few) even though they are out of my means, but I don't complain that they are overpriced, because they use material that a $200 knife uses.

I don't recall that I've inquired about how many knives you own or if you're willing to pay for certain knives. The personal attacks are unneeded.

I don't see anybody complaining. All I see are people expressing their opinions that knives are priced sky high today.

Whatever you asked or didn't ask, I put that statement there because that's basically what this thread is about. People saying that they are unwilling to pay the prices of knives that they happen to like but whose prices make it a deal breaker for them.

Does my saying that a certain knife is one i would like to have but am unwilling to pay for at the price it's being sold at, offend your dainty sensibilities?

Saying:

"I really like that knife, but can't justify the price."

Is not the same as saying:

"I'll never pay $200 for a knife with S30V!" or "Griptilians are way overpriced! $100 for 154cm, no thanks!"

The people I find amusing, are the ones saying the latter. What it costs is set in stone. What it's worth varies from person to person.

Edit -

I really feel I hurt your feelings, so I apologize, but none of my comments were even directed toward you.

These two guys said it best:

The best thing about overpriced knives is that you don't have to buy them. :D

Don't buy the expensive ones if you don't want to.
There's also more inexpensive knives out there than at any previous point in human history.
You can buy a knife that costs less than a burger.

Or, you can by a knife that costs more than a car.

It's up to you. :)

I think it's just because the economy is bad. Everything is expensive nowadays...

Not necessarily. Victorinox, Mora, and Opinel are as good as they always have been and still VERY inexpensive for what you get. Expensive knives are often more expensive than they need to be simply because so many are so willing to pay the high price. Just the market at work.

Man, I'm tired of how threads always go. Really off putting.

I think some knives are overpriced. I think it's due to many factors. I think MAP pricing is not a positive tactic. I think the influx of mid tech and high end manufacturers, along with new consumers with new preferences and less knowledge can inflate prices. I think the destruction of the dollar affects the price of everything.

I think MAP pricing is not a positive tactic.

Although I do understand that you are making this statement from a consumer standpoint, it is positive for dealers (from what I've read and personally been told). Less competitive pricing means more dealers can survive.

Competition is good. Having a flooded dealer marketplace hurts both dealers and consumers in the long run.

Anytime the subject of money/cost comes up there will be issues, you can bet on it. ;)

$500 for a freaking cell phone + the plan they have to pay for monthly and people think knives are expensive?

Not knocking anyone who does and won't say I'm money manager of the year, but it blows my mind that people line up to pay $600+ for something that's obsolete in a matter of months.

Didn't read the whole thread, but saw points made about Cold Steel doubling their prices and the devaluation of the dollar. Could some of the recent higher prices be due to some companies employing the strategy that "if it costs more then people will think it's better"? Benchmade already did this with MAP giving us no better quality. Some brands are known for being in that $30-70 range and have some really good knives for the price though not perfect. With $100 seemingly being the threshold these days as what a lot of people perceive as a "nice" knife, then if they push their prices up there then some may perceive them differently. I don't know, when I was looking for a "good" knife to replace my cheap Kershaw a few years ago, I thought 70-something dollars for a plastic handled Mini Grip was insane. If I was a new buyer these days and saw $90 for the same knife, then I wouldn't know what to think.

You and me both, it is mind blowing....

And even worse are the ones who complain about the prices of knives with those things in hand. ;)

Saw that a lot..... And it is very amusing....

OK, even though i'm relatively new here ,I 've been on a lot of forums and things go sideways a lot,so who wants to talk politics or religion next.? There are so many good points here to debate, but things in general are more expensive.I tell coworkers when they moan about the boss making money.I then remind them thas why people get into business ! Let them charge what they want, hell,I may even pay it but we don't have to.

The funny thing is in threads like this people act like we are talking about the difference in a 10,000 Square Ft House in the Hamptons compared to a Single Wide Trailer in a run down trailer park.

I gotta agree with you guys about the Buck. I have an older Buck 112 that I just love. I Basically the same handle length as 110 but with lighter super heavy duty micarta scales and a shorter blade. It's a great knife - very comfortable and secure grip, easy to sharpen hollow ground, and that blade shape is sooo classic. It has whittled a zillion walking sticks for the kids over the years. In fact, I may give one to my son as a gift when he bridges from Webelow's to Scouts.
