I was up late last night, clicking through the forums and browsing here in W&SS when I came across a thread title that had "spoon" in it. Out of curiosity I clicked on it and that caused me to search for more spoon carving threads.

I have to admit, I'm in awe of the diversity and skill shown

This looked like it came straight out of a catalog and it's his first try!

This one by hushnel is incredible as well.

I'm frankly amazed by what you guys are capable of. I'd like to see some sort of spoon carving (or carving in general) megathread, and it'd be great if we could get some sort of tips & tricks / tutorial thread going as well.

For that matter, to sweeten the deal, I'm starting a contest: Whomever can make the best looking spoon will get a free Platinum membership. Second place gets a free Gold membership.

The rules are:
  • Only new spoons will be allowed. No resting on your laurels with past spoons!
  • You have to take a picture showing the original piece of raw wood - no buying precut timber or something from Woodcrafters or 84 lumber; you need to go out in the woods and find some fallen branches. This will be the Before picture
  • The Before picture should have your username and the date visible (put it on a post it note or something)
  • There should be a couple Work in Progress photos if possible
  • The After picture should again have your username & date in it.
  • Additional "glamor" pictures will be allowed for contest purposes, however we do need a before & after picture.
  • The contest starts now, and will end Sept 30, to give you guys some time get out in the woods and carve away.
  • I reserve the right to be completely arbitrary in deciding the winner.
Any other suggestions?

Good question. Unless there are major complaints, I think we should limit this to hand tools that you'd pack into the woods: knife (regular or curved / spoon), sandpaper, coal, etc. No powered equipment of any kind. You can use whatever finish you like, be it tung or linseed or olive oil, but the spoon must be done by hand.

I'm not a very good carver, but this is a really cool contest! Can't wait to see what these guys come up with.

Spark, this is very nice of you. If I get the time before school starts, I'll give it a try. Good luck to everyone!!

Not that I have ever carved a spoon before but...

...if we already have those memberships would another 12 months be added to what we have, or could we donate the membership to someone else on the forums?

I carved my first spoon at the WNY Bladeforms gathering last weekend (Thanks JohnG!!) Sounds like fun I am in, now to go out woods walking. Thanks for the interesting contest.

Sounds like fun, I'm pretty busy but some things just can't be resisted. Thanks for already picking my spoon :)

I'll use a piece of oak, don't know what it'll look like, unlike the curly mahogany used for the spoon pictured above.

If you win, you can keep it or give it away, whatever you feel like.

Hello, hello, I guess I'm the only one dealing with a nasty rainy day :)

There's is only so much you can do with a mini axe but I got the chunk of wood down to carving knife size.

And since it is such a nasty day and I'm inspired by Skogkniv and I finished off the knife that needs to ship off tomorrow, I glued up a stack of leather for a ferro-rod :)

Thanks Skog for this inspirational idea!

I just never got around to carving a dang spoon before, but what the heck. I'm starting today.
There was a nice sized oak limb laying on the ground in my back yard. Wind blown off the Red Oak tree.

So I used my pack Sierra Saw to cut to length, and went to work with my Cold Steel Bushman and my Mora Clipper.

Folks, don't forget--your pics need to have your username and date visible in the pic somewhere. The devil really IS in the details! :D

Does it have to be a spoon, or can it be another type of camp kitchen utensil like a spatula?
Spoon is the name of the game, but if you feel like making something super cool I could be persuaded to award additional prizes.

Indeed! Attention to detail folks!

i like this thread...

i am just carving my first (kind of) spoon... can i include it for a price...???

You know I have never tried to carve a spoon before and this sounds like a fun one. I have less then 2 weeks to do this, so being my first and the short time to to do it so it should be good for a hoot. I am heading into the bush tomorrow morning to find a suitable piece of wood
