This contest probably needs some comic relief. I'll have to see if I can try my hand at one. "Katdaddy presents how not to carve a spoon."

Good question. Unless there are major complaints, I think we should limit this to hand tools that you'd pack into the woods: knife (regular or curved / spoon), sandpaper, coal, etc. No powered equipment of any kind. You can use whatever finish you like, be it tung or linseed or olive oil, but the spoon must be done by hand.

I have carved a couple and did some extensive reading on this subject prior to trying to tackle it. Most all of them said not to use olive oil as it will taint and turn pungent. Well if you are going to actually use it anyway. I guess I will be trying to carve a third one now. My first one I went to deep with the gouge and went thru the bowl. My second one turned out OK but no prize winner I assure you.

Thanks, I didn't know that. The consensus seems to be to do the bowl first, then the handle.

Will be using a piece of oak I collected earlier this year.

Yeah, man I kind of wish I picked an easier carving wood. I have a few small knots and almost a burl at the bottom of the spoon dish, I'm just about done with the dishing out, I want to carve it to exactly a Tbs so it can be used for measuring out coffee :) I'm always ball parking the coffee with mixed results.

My carving knife is just so cool I may have to disqualify myself for unfair advantage :)

Hi Spark -

Cool idea for a contest!

I will try my hand at a spoon, I have never done one, and very little carving at all either.

I look forward to the pictures of other's spoons!

best regards -

I'm in. I'm at my girlfriend's parents' cottage this weekend. Sounds like a perfect activity to get up to.

I have made spoons before, but never using the coal method. Do you gents have any pointers on the best way to burn a bowl using this method?

I WILL be trying again.
I picked the pine because the blue stain will look cool with some sort of oiled finish.
Good thing it broke because I forgot the required info.
Attempt #2 coming soon.

Will mineral oil be ok as a finish?
Will it make a suitable finish?
If not what can y'all recommend?

Well I finished my first spoon last night, its not bad but I can do better. I went with box elder because I have never carved anything before and I wanted something easy to carve. I didn't look at any of the how to's on spoon carving and I guess I did it backwards because the bowl of the spoon was the last bit I did. No breakage it looks like a spoon and works for now. Unfortunately I didn't think about the heart wood and that is slowly but surly disappearing. I am going to make another for the contest but this is what I did on a first attempt.

Notice the recessed leather wrap for positive non slip grip:p

This is not my entry, I just wanted to show the other newbies that it can be done.
My entry will be done with nicer wood, I am going to Tea stain it and finish with tung oil/beeswax so it will be food safe but have some depth and color. Look for that one next week.

unky you my fine friend are just a true craftsman. I seen your first knife attempt and it was better than most 20th attempt. I believe you can probably do anything you put your mind to. It is not this easy newbies so dont let him fool you. But you never know until YOU try.

The important thing is to get people to go outside & try and see what comes up. 100 people will have 100 different spoons, and there's plenty of time for people to make more than one effort.

I really hope that more people try this out I did that one in two evenings and had never tried before. I have a nice piece of wood ready to go for this weekend and I have some plans for it. Best part fo me is that it will be made with 3 knives I have made a crooked knife and a cheap folding saw. I have even come up with a home food safe stain

Also, REMEMBER TO PUT YOUR USERNAME AND DATE IN THE PICTURES!

Well got the rough spoon shape cut out. Now I need to go and buy the proper knife to carve out the bowl. No place local to buy one so guess I will look online. Think bens backwoods has them.
