This one I got smart on and had the 3/4" thick frame waterjet cut. It had to be that thick for the .36 caliber barrel to screw into, besides that I milled a ton of material off both sides and hollowed it out for the mechanisms. Its a slip joint feather pattern damascus blade with preban ivory. At this momment it is being engraved by Jere Davidson.

It is going to France eventually and I need a French name for it. Any suggestions?

JERE was an apprentist of mine years ago in Lynchburg, Va.---- Tell him I said hi. I'm confident he'll do a great job for you as he did when he worked for me. Jere is very consicienious about his work & doesn't play around doing it. Once he's started something, he keeps at it until finished ---- he use to come in and work nights and week ends to get work done. Ken

Wow! This is really generous of you, Bruce! I'll take #57!:D

Seriously, this is another beautiful piece!

Ken that is interesting. I enjoyed Jere's work for 6 years now. He must have had a good teacher. So do you still engrave?

That is outrageously beautiful. As usual. It's time you do a flinter though, dont cha think? Check into the boxlock pocket flinters. Mechanism is relatively simple. At least for people like you I would think.

Do you have link for them that you could post here? Might be interesting. I am working up to a wheel lock eventually. The match lock was challenging and I want to do another sometime on a pistol next.

Hi Bruce ---- yeah, I'm still at it. Have been scratching guns for 51 years this june. I'm in the shop 7 days a week and 10-12 hours a day in order to get client pieces out in a timely order. No body ever bitched at me for del. to fast or not charging enough. Best way to build a business. I told my apprentist, "don't worry about making a client, make a friend and they will want to be a client". That is, treat the client as you would want to be treated and you'll never have to look for work ! When I shut the business down, I had 40 young people engraving in house and kept them busy for about 10 years before I just got tired of the pressure. As a side note, I was a master engraver for both Colt and Win. custom shops. Ken

Do you think it's legal to BUILD a gun if you're underage? :p Even though I couldn't compare to this thing at all.

Wow is the only word I can seem to come up with, and it's so inadequate in this case. OK, I guess the word 'spectacular' also comes to mind!

You must be one of the greats after 50 years engraving. I wish I would have started 20 years ago maybe I would be acceptable by now. Actually I want to start soon even though I only have about 20 good years left.

Do you take work now? Do you have anything we could oogle at here? Would love to see something.

Bruce that is a beautiful piece. I do have a question for you with this piece. When you make a working gun like that, what are the laws that affect a piece like this? I mean do you have to register it with the ATF or anything? Or do you have to tell them who bought it? Just curious about it. Great job on it.

Hi Mike,
I dont think there is any law against building a gun at your age. Remember this is a muzzle loading gun and legal to make without a license. You might want to ask your parents first. ;)

Hi Wade,
You can make a gun that loads from the muzzle and sell it but if it is a breech loading gun even if you use black powder it is not legal to sell. You can however make it for yourself and shoot it and keep it forever. The ATF does not waste time with muzzleloaders.
Thanks for the compliments.

Once again Bruce, once again! I sure would like to see a book on your techniques in the vein of the Edmund Davidson's Integral knife book. I love the posts you do, but man it would be a sweet book to have on the table when company drops by.
