Yojimbo 2 Availability - What Happened?

Why is this thread even in the Spyderco forum? It's not a knife issue or even a manufacturer issue, but a dealer issue. It belongs in GB&U. Or the Dumbass thread in W&C.

He he he, and here I thought Spyderco angst * only applied to Sprint Runs.

* Spyderco Angst: noun, (spy)(der)(co) ˈäŋ(k)st, An intense feeling of apprehension, anxiety or inner turmoil that overwhelms a Spyderholic unable to buy a particular Spyderco knife. This condition is exacerbated by viewing photos of other Spyderholics enjoying the same knife or explaining in minute detail what a great knife they were so lucky to posses. The condition can become acute if the sufferer knew ahead of time they could have had the knife of their dreams if they had only taken action sooner. :chargrined: :miserable:

In layman's terms, it is, "I could have had a V-8 times a billion." :D

True, OTOH, People love other knife makers as much as Spyderco? Seriously? :D

Saving for posterity. :)

It is not a Spyderco issue at all.

How is Spyderco underestimating the initial demand, and being unable to meet said demand, for a new product not their issue?

The problems with online pre-orders was really not the point of my original post, if you'd bothered to read it. However, most people who have run with this thread fail at reading comprehension, and so the attention-whores and fanboys have taken it in a unintended direction.

Sal already posted the only answers that mattered, or were worth reading.

Yea it seems like any criticism is taken very personally around here. Truth is I ended up getting a camo Millie instead of the yo2 so it's not like spyderco lost my business. Perspective works both ways gents. Moving on now...

Then there you go, you have your answer.

I would think calling people attention whores is not the best way to garner a civil conversation. My reading comprehension is just fine, thanks for asking. This is a pretty public forum and just because you may want a thread to take "your" direction, does not necessarily mean that it will.

Spyderco does not have a crystal ball, nor can they speculate how popular a knife is going to be. That's just the nature of the business. What I would think could be a bigger issue is for them is to pump out 10K of them and them be a miserable seller. Not good for the long term I would think.

OK, time to chill a bit.

Hi Moving Target,

When we intro a new model, we have no idea what sales will be. We schedule our production carefully, and usually 6-8 months out. When a run is completed and through QC, they go on the shelf. Kelly (our sales manager) has been with us a long time. She knows the customers and the demand and she tries to be as fair as possible in her distribution. We always extend our best effort to be honest, fair and proper in all that we do. Even our store gets "its fair share", but the store must sell at a higher price to support our dealers.

The demand for our USA made models has been increasing. Our quality is better than it's ever been. Our production capacity is higher than it's ever been and we are making knives as fast as we can without dropping QC.

As mentioned, we have few choices. We can continue with the planned schedule, we can drop all models and focus on one, we can hold production until a minimum number are made (whichwe do now and then when outside makers are also slow). We choose to continue with production as per schedule.

The Yo 2 is a beautiful piece. Mike did a great job, engineering did a great job and our Golden knifemakers are also doing a great job. It's not a sprint and I expect it will be around for quite a while. If sales show strong and consistent, and the demand is there, we'll add a trainer.

While it may be our issue, for which we accept responsibility, there is little that we can do other than what we are doing. You might consider that we do underestand economics and business and we're running s fast as we can without tripping.

There you have it. All the explanation you will ever need right there. Thanks Sal!

I might add my two cents here as well and agree with some previous posts, that if you REALLY want a particular model that badly, there are ways to ensure it will happen when you want it to. Placing a pre-order with a relatively large and impersonal dealer such as KC is NOT the way to go IMO. Get a personal relationship with a smaller dealer and you will have much better results.

Oh, and just to rub it in a bit, I'm carrying my pre-ordered Yo 2 right now (thanks to dealer link removed by mods) and it is a fantastic piece. :) Sorry, couldn't help myself.

But as you point out, this isn't a sprint...no need for anxiety... :)

Oh my God, I thought they just made two and bred them.

Oh, "Brave New World" is here your "Fordship". The DNA is in the programs for the CNC's & Lasers, The Yojimbo2 is surely an Alpha+, each piece, refined to "now". But even clones need time to grow. G-10, modern & machined (time) to perform, Crucible Powdered steel, laser cut (time), surfaced ground to .001 (time), CNC ground (time), machined for lock tolerances (time), close tolerance lock only possible in this great modern age, all blended in assembly (time) for your dependable "High performance matter separator".

Hey Moving Target, Please have patience. I'm sure yolu will enjoy the creation. We all very worked hard to bring you a model refined and sophisticated.

True.

Unfortunately, it also applies to production runs. My post is a comment on the various rants and raves from folks that didn't get what they wanted. Spyderco is making as many knives as they can and dealers want to sell as many Spyderco knives as they can, but it is never good enough for some folks. They don't give a wit about the discontinued knives and closed Sprints still for sale years later. For others it's the evil speculators that sell on the secondary market.

I think singularity35 sums it up succinctly:

Entitlement issues here....
