Yojimbo 2 Availability - What Happened?

so besides everyone being extremely excited to get their yojimbo 2 has anyone wondered why snody's name has been taken off of the knife? I know that he and Janich made the first yojimbo and both names are on the original folder as well. Is this because the yojimbo 2 is janich's interpretation of the knife? Or did snody just take a bow?

Just curious...

I think it may have to do with the Ronin/Yojimbo and custom/production. I'm not clear on the entire history, but i can google. Here's a similar discussion.

Thanks to J.B. and Fifthprofession47 for pointing this thread in the right direction and filling in the historical details. Both the Ronin and the Yojimbo are my designs. It was an honor to have Mike Snody producing the custom/prototype versions, but he did not have a very active part in the design process.

As for the markings, the Ronin pre-dated Mike's association with Benchmade, so he was open to the idea of having his name on the blade and appreciated the recognition for his part in the process. By the time the Yojimbo came around, Mike was working with Benchmade and opted not to have his name on the blade when I offered the opportunity. Curiously, the Yojimbo design actually pre-dated the Ronin, but its acceptance as a production model came about much more slowly. That's a long story and I don't tell it well when I'm sober, so it'll have to wait.

As for the other wharncliffe blades that Mike has done since the Ronin, he explained to me that the Ronin had quite an impact on his approach to edge geometry. While reaching for something in his shop, he accidentally snagged the tip of a Ronin and opened up his hand pretty badly. He said that he had never been cut that easily with any other knife, and that experience left a lasting impression. The handle design of the Ronin and Yojimbo also made him a believer in the Filipino-style grip that I prefer.

Mike does awesome work and remains one of the most talented guys in the business. I'm honored to know that I had an impact on his approach to his craft.

Thanks again for your interest and to those who helped set the record straight.

He he he, and here I thought Spyderco angst * only applied to Sprint Runs.

* Spyderco Angst: noun, (spy)(der)(co) ˈäŋ(k)st, An intense feeling of apprehension, anxiety or inner turmoil that overwhelms a Spyderholic unable to buy a particular Spyderco knife. This condition is exacerbated by viewing photos of other Spyderholics enjoying the same knife or explaining in minute detail what a great knife they were so lucky to posses. The condition can become acute if the sufferer knew ahead of time they could have had the knife of their dreams if they had only taken action sooner. :chargrined: :miserable:

In layman's terms, it is, "I could have had a V-8 times a billion." :D

Very funny.

Very informative.

bladehq had them instock earlier today 12/12/11.........I ordered one lol. To OP stop complaining on a forum and keep an eye out on sites that sell them.

If you think this one is hard to get, just wait until the Carbon Fiber S90V Sprint Y2 comes out... :foot:

Two things. One:

And two, sprint run aside (breathing into a paper bag right now), the only mistake Spyderco has made in releasing the Yojimbo 2 is that they chose to release it as soon as production models were ready. We should be happy that, supply and demand being what they are, Spyderco has decided to produce yet another really gorgeous S30V/G10 folder at a retail price of about a hundred bucks.

Heh, we all do sometimes. I meant no snark by it. :D

Some people in this world have real problems. Thank goodness we aren't among them, and have the leisure of getting grumpy - and even describing as a "fiasco" - when we fail to receive the latest toy as soon as we want it.

Don't get me wrong. I too want a Y2. But delaying the gratification is not such a bad thing, really. :)
