You ever get a free knife?

I won a Case Texas toothpick once at a fathers day lunch. It was a great knife, but I gave it to my best friend though.

The other day I was gifted a Smith and Wesson, it was my sisters ex-boyfriend's and he had left it behind when he got all of his stuff and left. The tip was broke, the blade was scratched up so bad that I am pretty sure he tried to use a file to sharpen the knife, it was dull, and it didn't look like he ever clean the thing. I was extremely happy tough. So I took the knife apart cleaned it up, sanded off the rust, lubed, sharpened it (not quite shaving sharp, but I was happy), and then I gave it to my Mother since I didn't have a need for it and I figured she might find some use for it in her pocket book. :D.

Swiss army Craftsman from my Grandpa on my 12th birthday...still have it today.
A Benchmade "Big Spender" as a gift. The person buying only remembered i wanred a money clip knife. they forgot tat it was called a CRKT P.E.C.K. and got the benchmade because the clerck said it's a money clip too. Had it for about 6 years. Then I lost it at a fair about a year and a half ago.

My best Friend has given me a few over the years, and I him, but the coolest knife I'e ever received for free was a Kershaw Speed Bump. I won it here on the Bladeforums from member Vivi's Giveaway. The knife kicks ass, and spends a lot of time as my Primary EDC.

Most of my free knives have been gifts. My grandfather gave me a Buck 110 knock off with so much horizontal play it may as well have opened perpendicularly. I also received a Buck 110-sized folder with a rubber inlay, and a slip jointed fishing knife with a descaler, and a SAK Tinker from him. Still have the Tinker, but none of the others.

My only free fixed blade I won here about 4 or 5 months ago (DP Knives' 100th knife giveaway); it's a great little fixed blade...pretty, too.

It is an old superstition that goes way back. That if a knife is given as a gift, a coin must me exchanged as to ward off bad luck and to ensure the friendship.

I don't pay too much attention to these types of things myself, I was just wondering if you did.

I always follow that rule, my grandmother told me about it when i was 5 and she died shortly after that, So i always get a coin for a knife. Even if its just a penny.

My first free knife was a boyscout model with a fork, spoon, knife, and awl. It had the bsa shield on it. I have lost it but every once in a while i look to see if they still have the model i had as a kid.

A few years back, BLADE magazine offered one of the Spyderco "Q" folders with the word "Blade" in the blade if you renewed a subscription for a certain number of years.
I did and got that folder. (Sold it a few years later.)

That's the only 'free' knife I ever received except for the WWII USM3 Trench knife that I am the custodian for on behalf of my father. (Stopped him from using it to chop up boxes and other household chores!)
Ironically enough, I gave him an Effingham-made Ek model 3 as a replacement. Shaped that maple handle to be more comfortable and am amazed that a few years later, even that knife became a collector's item...

Cheers,
Mike

I really can't explain where these came from due to work rules, but they came in "trash" that my company gets. The Case has the tip broken, the Buck Rush needed a cleaning and sharpening and the Snap-on needed 2 screws and a thumb stud.

I don't think I ever got a random free knife, but I got a little Western sheath knife as a Christmas gift when I was a teen. I don't remember the model, but it resembled a small Little Finn with jigged delrin instead of stacked leather.

Lost it in Buffalo in 1998 when my car got broken into. They got the stereo and a few tools, but it was losing the knife that really chapped my hide.:grumpy:

I've gifted a few to people myself though; that's always a good feeling - especially when you know they'll get used.

I aquired this little beauty at the laundry mat one day. I was talking with this ederly gentleman and we got on the subject of knives. He said he had collected knives over the years and I told him my fondness of the blade. At the end of our conversation he reached in his pocket and grabed a set of keys. He then removed it from his ring of keys and handed it to me. It seemed like his prized possesion. He said here ya go fella you can have it. He must have carried this thing for years. I have had it ever since.

That thing is sweet.

I did. Only once. Few days ago won a Snody Kerambit. In a giveaway. From the maker.

Can't wait for it to get home and join his siblings

I was given a Mora 2k by a fellow forum member, very nice gesture by a very nice guy.

I was also given 3 knives that were owned by a Soldier KIA in Iraq by a coworker of my Moms.
They are a Gerber Gator folder, S&W boot knife, and S&W folder; they are very important to me and I hold them very highly.

I got a free mora in the RescueRiley christmas thread which was here or in WS&S. My first mora, which I happen to use almost everyday now. =/

Thanks again.

ok, granted that i was never given anything that could be termed a usin' knife, i did however receive souvenir decorative cutlery from a dearly departed relative who use to travel a fair bit after retirement. its not goin' to be worth much to anybody else now or later; but it's of great sentimental value to me for as long as i still walk this good earth.

My first free one was from my dad, a Parker-Imai lockback (110 clone.) Over the years, several have come my way, the most interesting situation was that I found a SAK Huntsman back in '92, just laying in the road; carried it for 15 years, wore it out, and as soon as I decide to retire it and get another SAK, what do I find? Another SAK Huntsman, laying in the road.

Don't know what I did in a past life to deserve such good karma, but hey, I ain't complainin'.

Since then, several free ones have come my way, especially from some very generous folks here. There'll be some happy Scouts come time for our summer campout.

thx - cpr
