I've used spoons, fingers and fork prongs to avoid knives, yesterday I used ginger scissors to free the ugly spyderco from the box

Never use a key. Punch 'em and break that tape like a man.
I don't extend a knuckle, but it's how I open most of 'em. I feel defeated when I have to resort to a tool.That one hit home because that's literally how I open Amazon packages with the paper tape. Middle knuckle out like punching your friend in the arm in elementary school, then rip. Works a charm actually.

No funnin', there's a FRN handled Gerber lockback on a shelf in my living room that I've had for at least 25 years, and I'm pretty sure it has only ever been used to open packaging.
