Your choice of traditional folder for woods

I'm going to go deer hunting this fall with this Schlieper Eye Brand 99S-DS along with at least one fixed blade (probably two!). I like to be "edgy" when I hunt! ;)

I'd have to agree with a Stockman. I have a yellow Case Medium with CV and while it isn't nearly as pretty as some of the knives posted here, it does the job.

The price is hard to beat too.

Just returned from a berry picking expedition in the forest, had to take something along in case I got stranded:D

Fiskars mini belt hatchet

Bark River Northstar in Bonestag

GEC Tidioute 73 Liner Lock also in Bonestag

Nothing heavy here but all credible. On my return I used the Fiskars to chop some kindling birch, the Northstar to make shavings for lighting. No lighter fuel or gas powered grills for me thank you, lit the grill put on the charcoal and grilled up some very nice fish, the GEC chopped parsley and garlic dressing. Cold white wine and garden veggies, bliss. Hoping somebody will be making me a berry tart soon:thumbup:

My first choice would generally be a multi blade folder, such as my Remington scout knife. However, I have been getting some good use out of my newly acquired Queen slipjoint Mountain Man. I have also been trying to "force" my Winchester moose into my short time this summer in the woods. Whether hiking or fishing, it has mainly been my Remington scout.

That is a swell center moose, model 1902, from Vintage Knives in Mississippi, made by Queen Cutlery from what I hear. Out of production now though, only 100 or so made. Ebony scales, pinned shield, 1095 blades, solid as a rock. One of the best pocket knives made by Queen or anyone else in the last 50 years in the opinion of most of the guys who got them.

You're a lucky man, by the time I found those it was too late. :(
I would gladly carry that one afield.

Blue Sky, I believe the Forum knife for this year will be a very close "copy" of the Vintage Knives Model 1902 Moose. I believe they are being made by Queen, they will have ebony scales, and appear to have the same blade grind as the Vintage Knives Moose.

I have one of the Model 1902's and it is a wonderful pocketknife! If you ever find one...or get the 2010 Forum knife...you won't be disappointed!

Another very close model is the Winchester (Blue Grass Cutlery/Queen) pattern 2880 1/2 from 1988.
(It has 1095 steel and jigged bone scales. (Reportedly vintage Utica Cutlery bone.)

These can still be found on the net from time to time. Might be worth a look.

I have to double check, I have one of these, or similar to it. Best "walk and talk" /snap I have ever had. Great folder, very stout. Mine was made in 1988.

Actually I do have dibs one of the forum knives. :) I've been trying not to think about it much since I am not too good at waiting. :o I hope they turn out as good as I've heard the V.K. ones were/are. I think I'd still pick up ones those older ones if I could.

I've grown rather fond of carrying a Case Trapper on my short jaunts into the woods these days.

I like my case mini trapper with wharny instead of spey. Its "sunburst" orange so its easy to spot if I set it down while working on something as well

If you are going into a hunting situation and have to make camp in the woods because you're spending some significant time there without fixed shelters like cabins, and in terms of days and nights their, and preparing camp with your typical after the successful hunt chores that would be necessary, like setting up camp with tents, fire-pit building, field dressing your game post harvests, meat quartering & butchering along with other preparation/cooking and survival chores, then I recommend a good lightweight axe, or good quality hatchet, and decent camp type sheath knife for skinning, tendon cutting and perhaps even caping if required. Additionally, I always personally opt and need a good quality 3 or 4 blade Stockman with a punch blade/tool in my pocket regardless of any situation..

If you are just hiking and woods walking on a day trip you'd need nothing more than a good traditional 3 or 4 blade Stockman folder w/punch blade in my opinion or any folding pocket knife with a punch blade for that fact. And remember, a Harness Jack pattern or a Scout knife pattern will also do in a pinch as long as she has sharp blades including a punch blade.

However, my personal favorite is a four blade and long ago discontinued in the 1970's Case model # 64047P..

Best,

I like the etched "For Flesh Only" on the spey blade. Very nice...and informative.

Blues, et al., I also have one of the Winchester 2880 1/2's! It's also a great pocketknife to carry and use!

For just a normal day-hike, I don't usually change knives but rather just carry whatever's in my pocket, assuming it's at least in, say, the 3.5" range. Could be my modded soddie jr., or a Old Timer 2-blade jack or Buck 303 stockman or Buck 55. If there's going to be some sausage roasting, I'll generally opt for my yella cv Case trapper, or SAK Adventurer or alox Soldier.

I've got lots of good choices and it could be a Copperhead or a Copperlock or a trapper or a lockback folder or maybe this one:

Maybe not all that exciting, but i have been packing one of these since I was six years old.

I have four of them, which ought to last me the rest of my knife packing days, but I will buy more if I get the chance.

The good old Schrade 293Y.

I have two regular Schrades and two Schrade Waldens.

I have used them on deer, coon, possum, groundhog, rabbits, quail, squirrel, and for every conceivable cutting chore.

It's hard to imagine a more practical and handy pocketknife, at least for me.
