Thank you so much.Nice, clean work, John.
While in lockdown spent a lot of time on the computer, some would say far too much time, i looked at a lot of sharpening videos, different methods and different systems. I have a passion for sharpening, it is something i just like doing, and there are now a lot of fantastic sharpeners available now of varying costs and quality. I have a lot of spare parts that i have accumulated, i saw a cheap sharpener on Ebay, i was not interested in it as a sharpener i was interested in the base unit, it was all metal. Anyway i decided to have a go at making my own sharpener to fill in time, so between all the parts i had and the metal base unit i purchased it has been a fun and interesting experiment. I should have it finishes this week, just doing some final tinkering. Have a look at it and let me know what you think, i am really interested in other knife peoples thoughts, you people out there use knives and sharpen knives and i value your opinion, you know what you are looking at and talking about.

This is what i have cobbled together so far, just needs some final touches.
Nice job. The opinels are great knives to practice your mods on, especially the wood, like to know your method for the scales.I bought 10 Opinel No8 "Handles to carve" from their web page. I have 2 left for myself and gave the rest away
Pretty easy relaxing under the avn this summer
I reshaped the blades and gave them some different finish. Acid wash, mirror shine and brushed. The one in the pic is acid wash with cherry wood
Firstly bit of background, i have been a freehand sharpener for over 50 years, but had to have an operation on my dominant hand and lost a bit of my feel with it, so i could still get a good edge, but i was not happy with them. So i tried a few systems some i did not like at all some were okay, but the one i liked was the Edge Pro style, i still had some control and input, so it was not completely freehand but closer than any other system. Rather than spend a lot on a system i may not like, i tried different styles of guided sharpeners by buying cheap knock offs out of China, just to see what worked for me, then i was going to buy the original, that was my plan. So i decided to get the Edge Pro, i really liked it, then i saw something on the internet which made me come up with the idea of making my own to my specifications so it suited me, and this is what i came up with. This is my mark ii model, the first one when finished i was not happy with, love this one, more stream lined and works for me a lot better than i thought it would.cudgee
That is really neat!
I always wondered how the Apex Edge pro (for reference sake) 'like' sharpening systems really worked. As the knife position constantly move (not clamped down like some other systems), I was wondering how you can find 'consistency' during the sharpening process, and when you come back to sharpening the 'next' time. I've seen number of videos that showed amazing edges achieved but always made me wonder. With the clamped system, at least the difficulty is finding consistency in position of the clamp in subsequent sharpening but the knife position doesn't change during a sharpening session per se.
Can you shine a little light on that please? I have a KME sharpener that I normally use but always wanted to try one of these sharpening system.
I forgot to mention, with the Edge Pro you can buy a magnet attachment which helps hold the blade steady, i made a turbo charged versionThank youcudgee !
Much appreciate your input! The system you built looks great!
Can't say I'm a 'serious' blade sharpener but do enjoy putting a nice edge on some of my users. I usually free hand just few swipes and strop like mad!
I haven't had to repair any edges or change any angles/reprofile edges so most of time it's been working out.
I might venture into edge pro sharpener but still get pretty good use out of my KME at the moment. But, KME isn't ideal for smaller pocket knives in my opinion. The clamps get in the way lol.
Thank you again!
