Your COVID19 responses (projects you’re doing), let’s see ‘em, and mine (86 splitback whittler mod)

A few months back my aunt gave me a nice 8" old hickory slicer ( washed, sharpened and put right in my kitchen ) and an old wire handled bread knife she found in the house they bought last year.

The handle was loose, and the blade had a bend in it, but the nice thin carbon steel showed potential.

I don't know what will become of it, but I decided to make a small Fillet out of it.

Still gotta put some walnut scales on it which I may or may not do today.

I needed a little printer stand as I'm working from home, so I cobbed this one up using some scrap oak I had lying around...

Working on a modification for JohnDF JohnDF . Thanks for letting me work on it, John. It's not quite finished (needs a new edge and some clean up on the scratches) and I made a couple of rookie mistakes that keep it from being pristine, but it's a better slices and has a wicked spear point and some slimmer handles now.

Love it!
I'm super excited to get it back.
Thanks so much for doing it for me.:thumbsup:

IMG_20200402_193009_resize_67.jpg I cold blued my Lloyd ... It already had a patina forming and I just degreased the knife and went right over it..applied a few coats ...wish I got the tang a little better but overall I like it. Stropped the swedge and the edge for a little contrast. This was an uneducated impulsive decision but I don't think I regret it hahaha

That looks good. The spear came out great and I think it’s a handier blade for general use. I noticed on the one I just did, the fit on the pivot bushings is not great. It’s not as noticeable when it is down inside the thicker scale. I took mine just down to the lettering on the pivot.

You'll all be happy to know I'm not posting any WIP vids on my project.
I'm working out the melody for 'The Liberty Bell' a John Philip Sousa march, on an F harmonica playing in the key of F. I have wanted for years, to learn to play this on diatonic harmonica.
You may know this song from the opening sequence of the Monty Python's Flying Circus tv show.
So far so good, but there is much to the song that I have yet to learn.

Yes, it isn’t a very tight fit. I don’t know how far down the professional mod guys go because they have no gaps in the bushing with the pivot pin or scales.

I don’t know either. I do know if you go too far down you’ll go past the part of the pin that’s mushroomed and the whole pivot will loosen up. I found that out first hand on a Birdseye pivot I was trying to make this week. It didn’t work out too well.

Bummer. Maybe it’s a matter of sanding and polishing? Hopefully someone who knows will chime in.

A week ago I bought a 1x30 belt sander (cheapo). I have been wanting a sander for ages but all this stuff going on finally made me do it. A couple days ago I got in some quality belts in various grits. I have a number of knives that I would like to thin the blades out and improve cutting performance so that's why I bought all this, and I thought it would be fun.

I'm starting to get the hang of it after practicing on junkers and worked on this 61ot after I got home from work yesterday. I was not going for perfection in finish, but a nice lean and straight grind and thinner edges. It turned out well. I recut the swedges too since I took the blades down enough that the original swedges pretty much disappeared.

It was buffed and ugly, and it still looks kinda ugly, but with increased performance! Here's how it looked before.

It’s fun, right? I’m really enjoying what a cheap belt sander can accomplish.
