Your Favorite Knives Under 20$

Nothing much new to add...

Frosts from Sweden -Craftsman and Sportfishing knives
Erikkson from Sweden - the ones with the rubber overmolded handles
Victorinox Hiker and Farmer (I believe the Farmer was $19.99)

I have an MTech camo folder that is halfway decent, and I recently picked up an MTech Khukuri for about $14. The khukuri has a terribly dull edge, but with a little work, it'll be a great, cheap chopper.

I have to say it's gotta be my CCC switchblade. Never heard of the company, don't know what the steel is, but it's got nice clean lines, leaf-shaped blade, wood overlays, very fast action and rock solid (feeling) lockup.

It's not very sharp, and I doubt the locking mechanism would stand up to much abuse, but honestly I have my other knives for such jobs and I the only reason I have an auto is just to play with, so this suits me just fine.

The Gerber LST, and the German KAT knife - great knives at great prices, and both great examples of good engineering at their debut.

Any of the Byrd folders are great deals. Virtually every one I have handled has been so impressive that to me they are certainly one of the best deals in cutlery.

STR

The best I've gotten for under 20 would have to be my two Moras, one with a red rubber handle, the other with a wooden handle. Also, my Cold Steel Bushman, and Coldsteel kukri machete.

ryan plan B for $11 from smkw. I also bought two carbon steel schrade sharpfingers for $20 actually 9.95 each a k-mart several years back.I doubt I'll beat those for the price

Higonokami with Aogami or Shirogami blades:

What kind of steel are the blades made from? I looked at the web sites, but must of missed it.

I tend to buy knives that I know will tend to get used and abused a little from pawn shops. I can buy pretty nice SAK's for around 5 bucks and sometimes catch a leatherman super tool or wave for 20 or a little over. Many of these knives tend to have some scratches, but I can over look the scratches.

Just thought I would put my two cents worth in...the CRKT Pesh-Kbaz on sale at SMKW is one heck of a deal on a really nice knife. I got mine a year ago or so, and paid quite a bit more for it. It has a "penetrator" tip, a very solid and beefy knife, quite a unique design. For under twenty bucks, it is a really good knife.

Also...geesh...not trying to be a CRKT pusher here...I have many other knives...but I have to highly recommend the CRKT Ryan Plan B as well...a really nice little fixed blade, nice configuration, and comes with a great little sheath and can be worn as a neck knife. Again, SMKW seems to have a great price at 11.99...I just bought mine a week ago at my favorite knife store for $15.00 and was really happy with that one as well.

Well it is right ther - Shirogami steel (yellow handle) Aogami steel (black handle).

It is actually laminated blades (as generic solution for many knives in Japan). Raw iron on sides and high carbon Shirogami:

C=1.3
Mn=0.2
P=0.025
Si=0.1
S=0.04

or Aogami (same with W and Cr addition):

C=1.3
Mn=0.2
P=0.025
Si=0.1
S=0.04
Cr=0.2-0.5
W=1-1.5

both Yasuki Speciality Steel by Hitachi.

This steel is what japanese top and custom knives are made from for years.

Shirogami means White paper labeled, Aogami - Blue paper labeled. Which reflects the way Hitachi label steel blanks.

Thanks, Vassili.

Thanks, Vassili.

Could you take another pic with something else in it for reference?

For $19.95 I like my cold steel true flight. 3/16" carbon v drop point 5-6" blade, high saber grind... a few steps above a throw-away, but at a throw-away price.

I hear lots of votes here for the opinels, SAKs and Moras -- all of which I think are great choices. But there's something missing on the large sizes so I'll put in my $10 worth here.

For the large blades under $20
-- Tramontina Machete or South African Panga knife.
